Chapter 7: The Man Behind the Locked Door
The door handle moved again.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Someone was trying not to make a sound.
I slipped Jonathan's letter beneath the photograph and looked at Eleanor.
"Don't move.""
Her eyes widened.
"Mother, what is happening?""
I raised one finger to my lips.
The handle stopped.
Then came three quiet knocks.
"Mrs. Whitmore?""
It was a man's voice.
I recognized it immediately.
Richard Hale.
I walked toward the door but didn't open it.
"Richard, what do you need?""
"There's a problem with the security system. I need to speak with you.""
I glanced at the clock.
It was 9:17 p.m.
"At this hour?""
"Yes, ma'am. It's urgent.""
I looked through the narrow opening.
Richard stood alone in the corridor.
His hands were visible.
His expression was unusually tense.
"Come in," I said.
He entered and immediately closed the door.
Then he locked it.
Eleanor stood.
"Why did you lock the door?""
Richard looked at her.
"Because someone has been accessing the private executive floors without authorization.""
I stared at him.
"Who?""
He hesitated.
"That's what I'm trying to establish.""
I folded my arms.
"Richard, I received a message telling me someone inside this hotel has been watching me. It mentioned Daniel Reed.""
His expression changed.
"Daniel?""
"Do you know him?""
"Of course. He's one of our security officers.""
"Is that all?""
Richard looked toward Eleanor.
Then back at me.
"Mrs. Whitmore, I think you should know something about Daniel.""
Before he could continue, my phone vibrated.
Another message.
*DON'T TRUST RICHARD. CHECK THE SERVICE ELEVATOR.*
I slowly lowered the phone.
Richard noticed.
"Who sent that?""
"Someone who seems to know more than you do.""
He frowned.
"Mrs. Whitmore, I have been trying to protect this hotel.""
"Then why did you tell me the cameras weren't working?""
He looked down.
"I was instructed to say that.""
"By whom?""
He hesitated.
"Charles Bennett.""
Eleanor gasped.
Richard continued.
"He called me shortly after you entered the lobby. He told me that an important guest was involved in a confidential corporate matter and that I should keep the incident from reaching the board.""
I stared at him.
"Did he tell you to delete the footage?""
"No. He told me to make sure it couldn't be accessed.""
"That's the same thing.""
"I know.""
"Why did you obey him?""
Richard's face tightened.
"Because he threatened to destroy my career.""
I walked toward the window.
"Richard, you watched an elderly woman being assaulted in your lobby. You had an opportunity to intervene. Instead, you worried about your career.""
He lowered his head.
"You're right.""
"That doesn't make it acceptable.""
"I understand.""
He took a folded sheet of paper from his jacket.
"I also found something in the hotel administration system.""
I unfolded it.
It was a visitor access record.
At 8:42 p.m., someone had entered the executive floor using a temporary security credential.
The visitor's name was listed as:
*DANIEL REED.*
I looked up.
"Why was a security officer entering my private floor?""
Richard shook his head.
"He wasn't scheduled to be here.""
"Then who authorized his access?""
Richard pointed to the authorization field.
*R. HALE — GENERAL MANAGER.*
I looked at him.
"You authorized this?""
"No.""
"Then someone used your credentials.""
He nodded.
"That's what I believe.""
A heavy sound came from the corridor.
Someone had stopped outside our door.
Richard turned pale.
Then a voice spoke.
"Richard? Open up.""
Edward Langford.
I looked at Richard.
"Why is he here?""
Richard shook his head.
"I don't know.""
Edward knocked again.
"Richard, I know you're in there. Open the door.""
Eleanor stepped closer to me.
I moved toward the small security panel beside the entrance.
"Marcus?""
The panel connected directly to the hotel's security office.
A voice answered.
"Yes, Mrs. Whitmore?""
"This is Grace. I need you on the executive floor immediately. There's an unauthorized visitor outside my suite.""
"Understood. Two officers are on their way.""
Edward knocked harder.
"Grace, I know you're listening!""
I remained silent.
Then he spoke again.
"You're making a serious mistake. Whatever Daniel told you, he's not the person you think he is.""
I looked at Richard.
His face had become completely expressionless.
"What does Edward know about Daniel?"" I whispered.
Richard didn't answer.
The knocking stopped.
Footsteps moved away.
A few seconds later, Marcus arrived with two security officers.
He checked the corridor.
"He's gone.""
I looked at him.
"Find out how he accessed this floor.""
"Yes, ma'am.""
"And locate Daniel Reed.""
Marcus nodded.
"I'll bring him here.""
Daniel arrived twenty minutes later.
He was wearing the same uniform he'd worn earlier that afternoon.
His dark hair was slightly damp, and his face looked pale.
When he entered, his eyes immediately found mine.
"Mrs. Whitmore.""
I gestured toward a chair.
"Daniel, please sit.""
He remained standing.
"There's something I need to tell you.""
"I know.""
He looked confused.
"You know?""
I picked up Jonathan's letter.
"Does this name mean anything to you?""
I turned the page toward him.
*DANIEL REED.*
He stared at it.
Then his shoulders dropped.
"Where did you get that?""
"From my husband.""
Daniel slowly sat down.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then he looked at Richard.
"Is he still here?""
"Yes," I answered.
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
"I'd prefer to speak privately.""
Richard immediately stood.
"Of course.""
But before he left, I stopped him.
"Richard, stay.""
Daniel frowned.
"Mrs. Whitmore—"
"If Richard has information, I want to hear it. No more secrets.""
Daniel took a deep breath.
"My father worked for Whitmore Hospitality when I was a child.""
I studied him.
"What's his name?""
"Thomas Reed.""
The name struck me like lightning.
Thomas.
The young maintenance supervisor from our first hotel.
The man who had helped Jonathan carry guests out during the fire.
The man who disappeared a few days afterward.
I stood.
"You're Thomas Reed's son?""
Daniel nodded.
"Yes, ma'am.""
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because my father asked me not to.""
"Where is he now?""
Daniel looked down.
"He died four years ago.""
I'm sorry," I whispered.
Daniel nodded.
"Before he died, he gave me something.""
He opened his jacket and removed a small metal key.
It was old.
Its edges were worn.
A tiny number had been engraved on its surface.
*17.*
I stared at it.
"Another key?""
Daniel nodded.
"My father said it belonged to a private archive connected to your husband. He told me never to hand it to anyone except Grace Whitmore.""
I took it carefully.
"Why didn't he bring it to me himself?""
Daniel's eyes became wet.
"Because he was afraid.""
"Of whom?""
He looked toward the window.
"Charles Bennett.""
Richard slowly sat back down.
I stared at Daniel.
"Explain.""
Daniel rubbed his hands together.
"My father discovered that someone had been changing financial records at the first Whitmore hotel. At first, he thought it was an accounting error. Then he found documents showing that money was being transferred into an outside company.""
"Which company?""
"Langford Capital.""
The room became silent.
Daniel continued.
"My father confronted Charles. He told him he was going to report everything to Mr. Whitmore.""
"What happened?""
"Charles told him that nobody would believe a maintenance worker over a senior executive.""
I closed my eyes.
Daniel's voice became quieter.
"Three nights later, the hotel caught fire.""
I looked at him.
"Are you saying the fire was deliberate?""
"I don't know. My father never proved that. But he always believed someone had tampered with the electrical system to destroy the documents he had found.""
Richard looked horrified.
"Why wasn't this investigated?""
"Because my father was accused of negligence. He lost his job. The company filed a claim against him for damages.""
I felt sick.
Jonathan had never told me this.
Or perhaps he had tried.
Daniel continued.
"My father spent years trying to clear his name. He kept copies of everything he found. He said Mr. Whitmore had discovered something important before he died.""
I held up Jonathan's letter.
"This?""
Daniel nodded.
"Yes.""
I looked at the key.
"Where does it lead?""
"To a storage unit beneath the old Whitmore residence. My father told me the original records were hidden there.""
Eleanor stood.
"Then we need to go there.""
Daniel shook his head.
"Not tonight.""
"Why not?""
"Because Charles knows about the key.""
I stared at him.
"How?""
Daniel looked directly at me.
"Because he offered me fifty thousand dollars to steal it from you.""
My blood ran cold.
"And did you?""
Daniel shook his head.
"No.""
"Why?""
He reached into his pocket and removed a small photograph.
It showed a young man standing beside an older woman outside a hospital.
The woman was smiling.
Daniel touched the photograph.
"Because my father spent the last thirty years trying to prove he wasn't a thief. I'm not going to become one.""
I studied him.
Then I looked at the photograph again.
The woman beside him was wearing a familiar silver necklace.
I recognized it.
It had belonged to Jonathan's mother.
"Daniel," I whispered.
"Who is that woman?""
He looked at me.
"My grandmother.""
I felt my knees weaken.
"Your grandmother?""
He nodded.
"She worked at the first Whitmore Inn. She was the housekeeper who raised my father.""
I stared at the necklace.
Jonathan had once told me that his mother had given it to a young employee before she died.
A young woman who had helped save several guests during the fire.
Her name had been Margaret Reed.
And suddenly, I understood why Jonathan had trusted Thomas with the secret archive.
Daniel leaned forward.
"Mrs. Whitmore, there's one more thing.""
"What?""
"My father didn't just hide the financial records.""
May you like
He looked at Eleanor.
"He hid a recording.""
