Chapter 2: The General Manager Went Pale

Richard Hale had worked for Whitmore Hospitality for eleven years.

He had started as a regional operations manager, survived two corporate restructurings, and eventually earned the position of general manager at our most prestigious property.

He knew my face.

He knew my signature.

And he knew exactly what the black card meant.

Yet when he looked at me that afternoon, his first reaction wasn't relief.

It was fear.

"Mrs. Whitmore," he said again, "please allow me to escort you to my office.""

I glanced at the blood on my sleeve.

"Why?""

He hesitated.

"So we can discuss this privately.""

I looked at the thirty people still standing around us.

"Richard, I was assaulted publicly. I believe we should discuss it publicly.""

A few guests exchanged glances.

Victoria let out a sharp laugh.

"Oh, this is absurd.""

Richard turned toward her.

"Mrs. Langford, please.""

She walked straight toward him, her heels clicking against the marble.

"Don't you dare speak to me like that. Do you understand who my husband is?""

Richard's jaw tightened.

"Yes, I do.""

"Then perhaps you should remember that my family has brought this hotel considerable business.""

She pointed at me.

"And now you're allowing this woman to create a scene?""

I watched Richard carefully.

He looked uncomfortable.

Not because Victoria was frightening.

Because he knew her family.

And apparently, that relationship mattered more than he wanted to admit.

"Mrs. Whitmore," he said quietly, "may I speak with you for a moment?""

I nodded.

He guided me several steps away from the reception desk.

"Please understand," he whispered, "Mrs. Langford is a very influential guest.""

I looked at him.

"Is that supposed to make what happened acceptable?""

"No, ma'am. Of course not.""

"Then why did your employees stand there while she dragged me across the floor?""

He lowered his voice further.

"I didn't witness the beginning of the incident.""

"But your cameras did.""

His expression changed.

For one brief second, I saw something I couldn't explain.

Then he looked toward the ceiling.

"Unfortunately, we've experienced a technical problem with the lobby security system.""

I stared at him.

"A technical problem?""

"Yes, ma'am.""

"At precisely the moment I was assaulted?""

Richard rubbed his forehead.

"I understand how that might appear.""

I took a slow breath.

"Richard, I've spent thirty-nine years building this company. Don't insult me by pretending I don't understand how convenient technical problems work.""

He went silent.

Behind us, Victoria was speaking loudly into her phone.

"Yes, darling. There's a complete disaster here. Some old woman is pretending to be the owner. Richard has completely lost his mind.""

She paused.

Then lowered her voice.

"I need you to come down here. Now.""

I turned toward the receptionist.

Her name tag read EMILY.

She was young, perhaps twenty-six, with dark hair tied into a neat bun.

"Emily?""

She looked up immediately.

"Yes, ma'am?""

"How long have you worked here?""

"Fourteen months.""

"Did you see what happened?""

Her eyes flickered toward Richard.

Then toward Victoria.

"Yes.""

"Would you be willing to tell me?""

Emily swallowed.

"I...""

Victoria suddenly turned.

"Emily!""

The receptionist stiffened.

"Mrs. Langford?""

"Have you forgotten what I told you about speaking to guests?""

Emily looked confused.

"I haven't spoken to anyone, ma'am.""

"Exactly. So keep it that way.""

I watched the young woman carefully.

"Emily, you're not in trouble for telling the truth.""

Richard interrupted.

"Mrs. Whitmore, perhaps we should—"

I raised my hand.

"Richard, I would like to hear her answer.""

Emily took a shaky breath.

"Mrs. Whitmore, I saw Mrs. Langford slap you.""

Victoria's head snapped around.

"LIAR!""

Emily flinched.

"I also saw her pull your bag and throw your belongings on the floor.""

Victoria stepped toward the desk.

"You're finished! Do you hear me? I'll make sure you never work in hospitality again!""

Emily's eyes filled with tears.

I moved between them.

"Mrs. Langford, don't threaten my employee.""

Victoria stared at me.

"Your employee?""

I nodded.

"Every person working in this building is an employee of my company.""

I turned toward Richard.

"Except, apparently, the people who believe they can rewrite its rules.""

He looked down.

I continued.

"Bring me the incident report. The original security footage. The guest complaint records for the last six months. And the complete list of staff members on duty today.""

Richard nodded quickly.

"Certainly.""

"Not a summary. Not a report prepared by your department. I want the original records.""

"Of course.""

"And I want the hotel security director here within ten minutes.""

Richard took out his phone.

Victoria rolled her eyes.

"This is getting ridiculous.""

She turned toward the guests.

"Everyone, please understand that this woman is clearly unstable. She's probably suffering from some kind of delusion.""

A man near the piano lowered his phone.

"Actually, ma'am, I recorded the entire thing.""

Victoria spun around.

"What?""

The man held up his phone.

"I saw you hit her. I also recorded you calling her filthy.""

Victoria's expression hardened.

"Delete that immediately.""

"No.""

"My husband knows people who can make your life very difficult.""

The man shrugged.

"Then I suppose I'll give them the video, too.""

A few guests laughed.

For the first time, Victoria had no immediate response.

Richard returned with his tablet.

"Mrs. Whitmore, security is on its way.""

"Good.""

He looked at Victoria.

"Mrs. Langford, would you please accompany me to the management office?""

She gave him an incredulous stare.

"Are you asking me to leave?""

"Not at this moment. We simply need to establish what happened.""

She pointed at me.

"She attacked me first!""

I blinked.

"Excuse me?""

"She came into my personal space! I was protecting myself!""

I looked at the guests.

"Did anyone see me touch her?""

Several heads shook.

The man with the phone raised his hand.

"I have the recording.""

Victoria's lips tightened.

Richard looked as though he wanted the marble floor to swallow him.

Then a new voice came from behind us.

"What's happening here?""

A tall man in a dark blue suit approached from the main entrance.

He was in his late sixties, with silver hair and a polished gold watch.

Victoria's entire expression changed.

"Edward!""

She hurried toward him.

Edward Langford was her husband.

He was the chairman of Langford Capital, a private investment firm that had recently begun acquiring commercial properties throughout the city.

He looked at Victoria's face.

"What happened?""

She immediately pointed at me.

"That woman attacked me!""

I stared at her.

It was almost impressive how quickly she could transform a lie into a performance.

Edward looked at Richard.

"Is that true?""

Richard opened his mouth.

Before he could answer, Victoria grabbed her husband's arm.

"Darling, she came in looking like a homeless woman. I asked security to remove her. Then she started threatening everyone and pretending she owned the hotel.""

Edward studied me.

His eyes moved from my worn coat to my canvas bag.

Then he looked at the black card in my hand.

Something flickered across his face.

"Where did you get that?""

I held it up.

"From my bag.""

He stepped closer.

"May I see it?""

"No.""

His expression tightened.

"Mrs. Whitmore, I presume?""

I nodded.

"Edward Langford.""

He extended his hand.

I didn't take it.

He slowly lowered his arm.

"Well," he said, forcing a smile, "this is certainly an unfortunate misunderstanding.""

"Is it?""

"Victoria has a temper. She sometimes reacts too quickly. I'm sure there's a reasonable explanation.""

I pointed toward the blood at the corner of my mouth.

"Is there a reasonable explanation for that, too?""

He looked uncomfortable.

"Of course not.""

"Then perhaps you should ask your wife why she struck an elderly woman.""

Edward glanced at Victoria.

She folded her arms.

"I didn't strike her hard.""

The lobby went quiet again.

I looked directly at him.

"Did you hear that?""

Edward closed his eyes briefly.

"Victoria, enough.""

But she wasn't finished.

She stepped forward and pointed at the golden shield on my card.

"That thing doesn't prove anything. Anyone could have stolen it from the company.""

I tilted my head.

"Interesting.""

Edward's eyes narrowed.

"Victoria, don't.""

I turned toward Richard.

"Did you hear what she just said?""

He nodded.

I looked at Edward.

"Your wife appears to know quite a lot about our executive security credentials.""

Edward's expression changed.

"Mrs. Whitmore, I think we're getting ahead of ourselves.""

"Perhaps.""

I slipped the card back into my coat.

Then I asked the question that made him stop breathing for a moment.

"Mr. Langford, why did your wife's name appear on my private executive calendar this morning?""

He stared at me.

Victoria's face went white.

May you like

Because she hadn't known that I had seen the appointment.

And neither of them knew what I had discovered about the reason for it.
