Chapter 5 - THE SECRET REVEALED

I walked out of the detention center feeling as though the floor had dropped out from beneath me.
Everything had changed.
This wasn’t just about Vanessa making a terrible choice in a moment of stress.
This was about a man named Jason—a criminal, a predator—who had been blackmailing his own sister, who knew where I lived, who had already threatened me once.
And Vanessa had brought him into my life.
I called my lawyer immediately.
I told him everything—the gas station, the video, the note, the messages, Jason.
He listened in silence, then said:
“Adrian, this changes things. If Jason Coleman is involved, this may go far beyond a simple child endangerment case. We may be looking at conspiracy. Extortion. And if he’s threatening you and your son… we need to get you both protected.”
“Vanessa said he’s dangerous.”
“Then we take her seriously. File a restraining order against him immediately. Move to a safe house temporarily if you have to. And tell the police everything you just told me.”
I did exactly that.
I went straight from the detention center to the police station and gave them the note, the messages, everything.
The detective listened carefully, his expression growing grimmer by the minute.
“We’ve been looking for Jason Coleman for weeks,” he said. “He’s vanished. Phone off, no known address, no contacts. If he’s threatening you… he’s likely already in the area.”
“He wants money,” I said. “From Vanessa. And now that she’s in jail, he’ll want it from me.”
“Then we’ll be ready for him.”
I drove home with my heart pounding.
When I walked through the front door, Noah was sitting on the living room floor, playing quietly with his blocks. He looked up immediately.
“Daddy! You’re back!”
I went to him and knelt down, checking him over as if I hadn’t seen him only hours earlier.
“I’m back, buddy. And I’m never going far away again.”
That evening, after Noah was asleep, I sat at the kitchen table and pulled out Vanessa’s notebook again.
If she had been hiding Jason from me… what else was she hiding?
I flipped through every page, carefully, looking for anything I might have missed.
Bills. Receipts. More notes.
And then, tucked in the very back, behind a blank page, I found something that turned my blood to ice.
A photograph.
Vanessa standing beside a man with dark hair and a scar across his left eyebrow.
Jason.
And standing between them, smiling up at the camera… was a little girl.
Maybe four years old.
She had Vanessa’s eyes. And the same dark hair as the man beside her.
Written on the back in Vanessa’s handwriting:
*Lila. 4 years old. My everything.*
I stared at those words, my mind reeling.
Lila.
A daughter.
Vanessa had a daughter.
And she had never told me. Not once. In six months of living together, planning a future, talking about family… she had never once mentioned a little girl named Lila.
Why?
Where was she?
I grabbed my keys and drove straight back to the detention center.
It was late. Visiting hours were long over. But I demanded to see Vanessa, and after some argument, they brought her out again.
She looked exhausted. Defeated.
Until she saw the photograph in my hand.
Her face went white.
“Where did you get that?” she whispered.
“From your notebook. Who is she, Vanessa?”
She looked away, eyes filling with tears.
“Answer me!”
“Her name is Lila,” she said, her voice breaking. “She’s my daughter.”
My heart felt like it stopped.
“Your daughter. You have a daughter. And you never told me.”
“I couldn’t!” She leaned forward, desperate. “If I told you about her, you would ask questions. You would ask who her father was. And then you would find out about Jason!”
I stared at her, stunned.
“Jason is her father?”
Vanessa nodded slowly, tears streaming down her face.
“Yes. He’s her father. And he’s terrible to her. Adrian… I left him because he was hurting her. I ran away with nothing. I changed my number. I tried to start over. But he found me. He demanded money. Said if I didn’t pay, he would take Lila away and I would never see her again.”
I sat there, every lie she had told me suddenly making horrible sense.
“So all this time… you were paying him to keep him away from her.”
“Everything I had went to him,” she sobbed. “Every penny. I moved in with you because I had nowhere else to go. I needed a safe place. I needed protection. And I thought… I thought if I could keep Jason away, I could bring Lila to live with us. I wanted to tell you. So many times. But I was terrified you would throw me away when you found out who her father was.”
“And Noah?” I asked quietly. “Did you ever intend to tell him he had a little sister?”
“More than anything,” she whispered. “I loved Noah. Truly. I wanted us to be a family. But Jason kept raising the price. And then that day… I got a call from him. Said if I didn’t have the money by sundown, he was keeping Lila forever. I was on the phone with him while Noah was crying… and I just… I lost it. I wasn’t thinking. I told the driver to keep going… and then I realized what I’d done… but it was too late.”
I stood up slowly, the photograph still in my hand.
“Where is Lila now, Vanessa?”
May you like
She looked at me, terrified.
“With Jason.”
