Chapter 16 - THE VERDICT

The judge delivered his decision two weeks later.
Jason was found guilty on all charges—extortion, kidnapping, child endangerment, corruption, and a dozen other counts. He was sentenced to thirty years in prison.
Miller was convicted of accepting bribes, obstruction of justice, and official misconduct. He lost his badge, his pension, and was sent to prison for fifteen years.
And Vanessa…
The judge looked at her with a mixture of disappointment and compassion.
“You made terrible choices,” he said. “You lied. You endangered a child. And you kept another hidden from his father. But you also testified truthfully. You helped bring down two dangerous men. And the evidence shows you were acting under constant fear for your life and the lives of your children.”
He paused.
“Sentence suspended. Two years probation. Fifty hours community service. Full custody of your daughter will be determined in family court, given the circumstances. And you will undergo counseling—both for your choices and for the trauma you have endured.”
Vanessa stood frozen.
