Chapter 15 - THE HEARING

The preliminary hearing took place one month later.

The courtroom was packed. Reporters. Police officers. Family members I had never met.

Jason and Miller sat at the defense table—both looking confident, even though the evidence against them was overwhelming.

Vanessa testified first.

She sat in the witness box, raised her right hand, and swore to tell the truth.

And then she did.

She told the court everything.

About Jason’s threats. About the years of extortion. About Miller taking bribes and protecting him. About the fear that had driven her to lie and hide. About the phone call at the gas station that had broken her focus and led to the worst mistake of her life.

She spoke clearly. Calmly. Without tears.

And when she finished, the courtroom was silent.

Then it was my turn.

I testified about what I had heard at the cabin. About the threats. About the recording. About finding Lila.

I told the court about the children. About how Noah and Lila had found each other. About what was truly at stake here—not just crimes and punishments, but two little lives that had been torn apart by greed and fear.

When I stepped down from the witness stand, I looked over at Vanessa.

She was watching me. And for the first time since I had met her, she looked truly free.

The truth was out.

All of it.
