Chapter 12 - THE CHOICE

pregnant right before she left you four years ago. She was scared. She was young. And then Jason found her… and she lost the courage to tell you. She was afraid you’d take Lila away. Afraid she’d lose both of you.”

My throat tightened painfully.

“So she hid her. All this time.”

“She did what she thought was best,” Carter said quietly. “It was wrong. And she paid a terrible price for it. But she loved that little girl, Adrian. And she loved you. That part was never a lie.”

I looked down at Lila—my daughter—sleeping peacefully against my side, clutching that tiny teddy bear.

Four years.

I had missed four years of her life. First steps. First words. First smile.

“And Noah?”

“Safe at your house. We’ve got officers watching the place. Mrs. Henderson says he’s fine. Keeps asking when you’re coming back with his bear.”

I looked down at Lila again.

She was my daughter.

Noah had a sister.

And Vanessa… the woman who had lied to me about everything, who had endangered my son, who had kept my own daughter hidden from me for four years… was still the mother of my child.

I had to make a choice.

Walk away. Let her face the full weight of everything she had done. Or stand by her—for the children’s sake—and help her rebuild what she had broken.
