Chapter 6 - THE BUYER

I drove until the cabin was far behind us. Clara sat beside me in the passenger seat, Noah asleep in her lap in the back. No one spoke. There was nothing left to say.

I pulled over at a rest stop an hour later. My hands were shaking so badly I could barely hold the steering wheel. Clara touched my arm.

“Emily,” she said gently. “We have to call Sarah. We have to tell her what happened.”

I nodded. I pulled out my phone and dialed. Sarah answered immediately.

“Emily? Where are you?”

I told her everything. The cabin. The men. The buyer. Daniel staying behind. The fire.

Sarah was silent for a long time. Then she said, “I’m dispatching every available unit. I’ll have them comb the entire area. But Emily… if the cabin burned as hot as you described…”

She didn’t finish. She didn’t have to.

“I know,” I said. “But Cole got away. And he mentioned a buyer arriving at sunrise. Someone who was coming to take Noah.”

Sarah’s voice sharpened. “A buyer?”

“That’s what he said. An exchange. Money for Noah.” My blood ran cold. “Evelyn didn’t just order his death. She sold him.”

“I’ll look into every account, every contact, every business associate she ever had,” Sarah said. “But Emily… you need to get to a safe location. You and Clara and Noah. Cole is still out there. And if this buyer exists… he knows what was promised. He won’t just walk away empty-handed.”

“I know,” I said. “And I’m not running forever. Whoever this buyer is… he paid Evelyn. He expects delivery. And if I can figure out who he is… I can find out exactly what she planned.”

“Emily, be careful. This is far bigger than we thought.”

“I will,” I said. “But Sarah… if Daniel is still alive… find him. Please.”

“I promise.”

We hung up. I looked in the rearview mirror. Noah was awake now, staring at me with wide, solemn eyes.

“Mommy?”

“Yes, baby?”

“Is Daddy coming?”

My throat tightened. I pulled the car over and turned around. “Daddy had to stay behind to make sure the bad men didn’t follow us. He’ll join us soon.”

Noah nodded slowly. But he didn’t look convinced.

“Grandma’s friends were mean,” he said quietly.

“Yes,” I said. “They were.”

“Is Grandma sorry?”

I closed my eyes. Evelyn had written a letter ordering her death. She had sold her own grandson to a stranger. She had burned everything down rather than lose control.

“I don’t know, Noah,” I said honestly. “I hope one day she will be. But right now… we have to keep moving.”

We drove to a safe house Sarah had arranged—a small, secure property outside the city, unlisted, unconnected to any of our names. Sarah met us there an hour later. She looked exhausted.

“The cabin is gone,” she said, sitting down across from me. “Completely destroyed. Firefighters found two bodies inside. One was the second man—identified as a small-time criminal Evelyn paid regularly. The other… Emily, the remains are badly burned. Dental records are being processed. But… they also found blood leading away from the cabin. Signs someone escaped.”

“Daniel?” I stood up, hope flaring sharp and painful.

“Or Cole,” Sarah said carefully. “We don’t know yet. But Emily… there’s something else. I pulled Evelyn’s jail records. She made one phone call. Last night. To a number registered to an offshore holding company. The same one your father used to own the mansion.”

I froze. “My father’s company?”

“Exactly. And the call lasted exactly two minutes. Long enough to give instructions. Short enough to avoid being traced.” Sarah leaned forward. “Evelyn is running this from jail. She has access to funds. She has people. She’s orchestrating everything.”

“Then who is the buyer?” I asked. “And why would he pay so much just to take Noah?”

Sarah pulled a file from her bag and placed it on the table. “I went back through your father’s records. Everything Evelyn transferred. And I found something… strange.”

She slid a document across the table.

“Your father had a business partner. A silent partner. For twenty years. No name listed on any public record. Just initials: V.K. And every major transaction—including the purchase of the mansion—was co-signed by V.K.”

“V.K.,” I said. “Who is that?”

“I don’t know,” Sarah admitted. “But Evelyn’s phone call last night went to a number in the same region where V.K.’s accounts are held. And the same region where Martha was said to have fled.”

Everything connected. The buyer. The partner. The hidden accounts. The people Evelyn answered to.

“Evelyn didn’t plan this alone,” I said slowly. “She was working for someone. This V.K. All along.”

“It looks that way,” Sarah said grimly. “Your father found out about it shortly before he died. That’s why he transferred everything to you and Noah. To protect it. To keep it out of their hands.”

My breath caught. “He knew.”

“He knew,” Sarah confirmed. “And he died before he could expose them. Emily… I think your father was murdered.”

The words hung in the air, heavy and terrible.

“Evelyn killed him?” I whispered.

“Or V.K. did. Or both. He died of what was ruled a heart attack. But there was no autopsy. And Evelyn was the one who found him. The one who handled his affairs. The one who rushed the cremation.”

I stood up and walked to the window. Everything changed. Every piece fit together in a pattern so dark I could barely breathe.

My father had been murdered. Evelyn had been working with a secret partner to steal everything. She had altered Noah’s birth records to invalidate the inheritance. She had ordered Noah killed or sold. She had planned to hand everything over to V.K.

And then I had walked into that dining room and taken it all back.

I turned back to Sarah. “Evelyn is still in contact with V.K. from jail.”

“It appears so.”

“Then we let her finish what she started.” I sat down and picked up the file. “We let her arrange the meeting. We let her deliver what she promised. And then… we catch V.K. ourselves.”

Sarah stared at me. “That’s dangerous. If V.K. is the one pulling all the strings—”

“Then he’s the one who knows everything,” I said. “He knows who killed my father. He knows why Noah was targeted. He knows where Daniel is. And if we can get to him… we can end this. Once and for all.”

Sarah hesitated. Then she nodded slowly.

“I’ll set it up. But Emily… you stay back. Let me handle the arrest. If V.K. is as dangerous as he appears… you and Noah are the targets.”

“I am the bait,” I said. “Because Evelyn told V.K. that I hold everything. The deeds. The trust. The authority. If he wants it… he has to come to me.”

Sarah stood up. “I’ll make the arrangements. But Emily… promise me one thing.”

“Anything.”

“If anything goes wrong… you run. Don’t fight. Don’t try to save anything. Just take Noah and disappear.”

“I promise,” I said.

May you like

But as Sarah left and I looked at Noah sleeping peacefully on the sofa, I knew I would never run. Not until I had answers. Not until justice was done. Not until I held the person responsible for everything that had happened.

V.K. Whoever you are… I’m coming for you.
