Chapter 16 - THE TRUTH AT LAST

Viktor descended the stairs slowly. Gun raised. Eyes fixed on Daniel.
“At last,” he said. “The prodigal son returns.”
Daniel stepped in front of me. “What do you want?”
“I want what was stolen from me.” Viktor’s voice was calm, terrifyingly so. “Your father promised me everything. Then he hid you. He told everyone you died. He erased your existence. All so you could take what is mine.”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Daniel said.
“Liar.” Viktor took another step down. “You know exactly what I mean. You are Lia’s son. The boy she carried when she died. The boy Thomas hid. The boy who, if he lives… destroys me.”
Daniel stiffened. “Lia?”
“Your mother.” Viktor’s smile was cruel. “She was young. Beautiful. And foolish. She threatened to expose me. To tell everyone what I had done. So I pushed her. Off a cliff. Just like I pushed your father. And now… I will push you.”
Daniel stood frozen. “My mother… you killed my mother?”
“And your father. And anyone else who stood in my way.” Viktor’s eyes flickered toward me. “And you knew. Both of you. Emily came to court today and spoke in riddles. She gambled everything on you being alive. And now… here you are. And here I am.”
He raised the gun.
Daniel didn’t flinch. He looked at Viktor. Then at me.
“Emily… what is he saying?”
I took a breath. Deep and ragged.
“Daniel… your mother was Lia. Your father was Thomas. My father.”
Silence.
Daniel stared at me. The words seemed to hang in the cold air between us.
“Your father?” he whispered.
“Thomas Holloway was my father too.” My voice broke. “We share the same father. We are brother and sister.”
Daniel swayed. He took a step back, as if I had struck him.
“No…”
“I didn’t know,” I said, tears spilling over. “I never knew. Not until yesterday. I found the birth certificate. Evelyn hid it. She hid everything. To protect you. To keep Viktor from finding out.”
Daniel looked at Viktor. Then back at me. The horror in his eyes cut deeper than any blade.
“All this time…” His voice was barely audible. “We were… family.”
“Yes.”
“And Noah…”
“Is our son.”
Daniel closed his eyes. He swayed again. I reached for him, but he pulled away. As if my touch burned him.
Viktor laughed. A harsh, ugly sound.
“Beautiful,” he said. “Simply beautiful. Brother and sister. Married. With a child. A sin. A scandal. A shame that will destroy everything you claim to be.”
He stepped closer.
“Now look at you. Broken. Guilty. Ashamed. And soon… dead.”
He raised the gun.
Daniel stepped forward. Between me and Viktor.
“You want me,” Daniel said. “You always have. Let her go. Let Noah go. And do what you came to do.”
Viktor paused. He looked at Daniel. At the way he stood. Proud. Defiant. Exactly like his father.
“You would die for her?” Viktor asked.
“I would.”
“Even knowing what you are?”
“Even knowing.”
Viktor studied him. For a long moment. Then he sighed.
“Thomas always said you had his heart. Stubborn. Foolish. Loyal to a fault.” He raised the gun higher. “Very well. I will grant your wish. But before you die… you should know one final thing.”
Viktor’s eyes locked on mine.
“Your father knew. From the moment you were born… he knew you were brother and sister. He saw the birth certificates. He read the files. And he did nothing. He let you meet. He let you fall in love. He let you marry. All so that one day… you would produce an heir. A child of pure blood. A child no one could question. A child to replace both of you… when Viktor came.”
The world stopped.
My father had known.
He had known.
And he had let us.
He had sacrificed us. To protect the legacy. To defeat Viktor.
I stared at Viktor. “You’re lying.”
“Am I?” Viktor pulled a folded letter from his pocket. “Found in Thomas’s safe. Written the day he died. To me. Explaining everything. Boasting of his plan. Telling me that even if I killed him… his grandchildren would destroy me. Because he had bound them together… by blood and by love… so tightly that nothing could tear them apart.”
He tossed the letter to me.
I caught it. My hands shaking as I read.
*Let them fall in love. Let them marry. Let them build a life. When the truth is revealed… it will be too late. They will already be bound. And together… they will be stronger than you. You cannot destroy what you cannot separate. And you cannot separate them. Because they are already one. In blood. In name. In heart. That is my revenge. That is my victory. And that… is how I will defeat you.*
I lowered the letter. The words blurred.
My father had not been protecting us. He had been using us.

Every moment. Every kiss. Every word of love.
All part of a plan.
