Chapter 18 - THE NEW BEGINNING

We did not run far. Only to the safe house. To Noah.

When we walked through the door, Noah ran to us. He threw his arms around Daniel’s legs.

“Daddy! You’re back!”

Daniel lifted him. Held him close. Tears streamed down his face. Noah wiped them away with small, gentle hands.

“Why are you crying, Daddy?”

“Because I’m happy,” Daniel whispered. “So very happy.”

That night, we sat together by the fire. Noah asleep between us. Daniel and I… we did not touch. We did not embrace. We sat apart. Bound by blood. Separated by truth.

We spoke of everything. Of our father’s plan. Of Evelyn’s sacrifice. Of Viktor’s crimes. Of the terrible, beautiful, impossible truth of who we were to each other.

“I don’t know how to do this,” Daniel said quietly. “To love you… and to know…”

“I know,” I said. “I feel it too. Every time I look at you, I see the man I married—the father of my child, the one who held me when the world fell apart—and then I see the truth. The blood that runs through both of us, the secret woven into every moment we ever shared. It twists inside me like a knife.”

Daniel stared into the fire, his face pale in the orange glow. “Our father built this. He knew. He watched us grow up together, fall in love, promise forever… and he said nothing. He made us pawns in his war against Viktor. He bound us together so tightly that not even truth could tear us apart. A cruel, brilliant, terrible plan.” He lifted Noah’s small hand gently, his voice cracking. “And Noah… our son… he carries the weight of it all.”

“Noah is innocent,” I said firmly. “He is not a sin. He is not a mistake. He is ours, in every way that matters. And we will protect him. We will love him. And we will build him a life that is not defined by our father’s choices or Viktor’s crimes or the blood that binds us.”

We sat in silence long after the fire burned low. We did not touch. We did not speak of love or marriage or what came next. There were no words big enough to hold the truth between us—no name for what we were, no map for the road ahead. We were bound by love and blood and a child, yet separated by a line we had never known existed until it was too late to cross.

When dawn broke, Sarah arrived. She stood in the doorway, her expression grave but her eyes kind.

“Evelyn turned herself in,” she said quietly. “She confessed to shooting Viktor. Said it was self-defense, that he was about to kill you both. She made a full statement—Viktor’s crimes, the secrets, everything. She gave them the letters, the records, the notebook. She took every weight off your shoulders.”

“And Viktor?”

“Dead. Died at the scene. No witnesses but you three, and Evelyn’s account matches every piece of evidence found in the crypt. The fire destroyed most of the physical proof, but what remains… it supports her story.” Sarah paused, looking between us. “She also told them the truth about Daniel. About his parents. About who he is.”

Daniel stiffened. “And?”

“And legally… you are Thomas’s heir. Lia’s son. The entire Holloway estate passes to you. Viktor’s claims are void. His guardianship petition dies with him. There is no one left to challenge you.” Sarah hesitated. “But she also told them… about the marriage. About Noah.”

My chest tightened. “What happens now?”

May you like

“The marriage will be annulled. It was never legal. By law, you are brother and sister, not husband and wife. Noah’s birth certificate will be amended. He will be listed as your son… and your nephew. There will be questions. Scandal. Whispers. People will talk.” Sarah met my eyes steadily. “But there will be no charges. No one knew. Not even you two. The law recognizes that.”

Daniel stood slowly, setting his jaw. “Then let them talk. We will face it together.”
