Chapter 17 - THE FIRE AND THE TRUTH

Viktor watched the realization hit me. His smile twisted.
“Your father played the longest game of all,” he said. “And you… you walked right into it. You loved each other. You built a life. You had a child. And now… you are destroyed. Just as he planned. Because the truth will tear you apart.”
He raised the gun.
“But I am not him,” Viktor said. “I do not play games. I end them.”
Before he could fire, Daniel lunged.
They crashed together against the stone wall. The gun went off. The shot echoed deafeningly through the crypt. Daniel grunted as Viktor drove a fist into his ribs. But Daniel did not step back. He grappled for the weapon.
I looked around desperately. My flashlight beam caught an oil lamp on a stone shelf. I grabbed it.
“Daniel! Duck!”
Daniel dropped. I swung the lamp. It shattered against the stone wall beside Viktor. Flame leaped up, catching his coat.
Viktor screamed, swatting at the fire. He stumbled back, gun wavering.
“Run!” Daniel shouted.
We scrambled up the stairs. Behind us, Viktor roared. Gunfire cracked again and again. Bullets chipped stone and ricocheted wildly.
We burst out into the night air. Sarah was waiting at the entrance. She saw us, saw the flames already licking out of the crypt doors.
“Get in!”
We ran. As we reached the car, Viktor stumbled out of the mausoleum. His coat was burning. His face was streaked with soot. He raised the gun one last time.
A single shot rang out.
Viktor froze.
He looked down. A dark stain bloomed across his chest.
Then he fell. Slowly. Like a tree being cut down.
Behind him, in the doorway of the mausoleum, stood Evelyn.
She leaned heavily against the stone frame. Holding a rifle. Her face pale. Her eyes locked on Viktor’s falling body.
Viktor turned his head. Saw her.
“You…” he whispered.
“Goodbye, Viktor,” Evelyn said.
Viktor collapsed. He did not move again.
We stood frozen. Staring.
Evelyn lowered the rifle. Her hands trembled. She looked at Daniel. Then at me.
“I told him,” she said, her voice thin and ragged. “I told him if he touched my son… I would kill him. He laughed. He thought I was locked away forever.” She took a breath that shuddered. “I escaped. Two days ago. With help. I came here to finish what I started.”
She looked at the burning crypt. At Viktor’s body.
“And now… it is done.”
Daniel stepped forward. “Mother…”
Evelyn looked at him. Her face softened. She reached out and touched his cheek.
“I am sorry,” she said. “For everything. For the lies. For the silence. For letting you believe I was your mother. I loved you as my own. But I was never your blood. And I should have told you.”
Daniel closed his eyes. “I know.”
“Your father planned this,” Evelyn said. “Every part of it. He knew one day the truth would come out. He knew it would hurt. But he believed it was the only way to defeat Viktor.” She looked at me. “He used you both. Cruelly. Unforgivably. But he also gave you each other. And he gave you Noah. And in the end… that is what matters.”
Sirens wailed in the distance. Approaching fast.
Evelyn looked toward the sound. Then back at us.
“I will not run,” she said. “I have done what needed to be done. Let them take me. Let the truth be told. And let this family… finally begin to heal.”
She kissed Daniel’s forehead one last time. Then she stepped away from us. Toward the approaching lights.
“Go,” she said quietly. “Take the boy. And take your son. And build a life… that is yours. Not his. Not anyone’s. Yours.”

She walked down the hill alone. To meet the police. To face whatever came.
We watched her go. And then we turned… and walked the other way.
