Chapter 8: The Truth About That Night
Nobody spoke for several seconds.
The world felt suspended.
Danielle was alive.
But the reunion I had imagined a thousand times in my head never happened.
There was no running into each other’s arms.
No perfect emotional moment.
Because twelve years of pain stood between us.
Jasmine was the first to move.
Slowly.
One step.
Then another.
“Mom?””
Danielle covered her mouth.
“Yes.””
Jasmine shook her head.
“You’re really here.””
Danielle cried.
“I’m really here.””
Then Jasmine turned around.
And I saw something I would never forget.
Not anger.
Not happiness.
Confusion.
Because a child who spent years grieving someone had to suddenly learn she was never gone.
She walked into Danielle’s arms.
And Danielle held her like she was afraid she would disappear.
I stepped away.
Because that moment belonged to them.
But my eyes stayed on Felicia.
She lowered the gun.
“I never wanted this.””
I looked at her.
“You never wanted what?””
“For Jasmine to lose her mother.””
I laughed quietly.
“You helped make that happen.””
She looked down.
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt.
After everything, I expected excuses.
But she had none left.
“Tell me the truth.””
Felicia looked at Danielle.
Then back at me.
“Danielle found out about Nathan.””
“I know.””
“No.””
Felicia shook her head.
“You know part of it.””
She took a breath.
“Nathan wasn’t the only person involved.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“Who else?””
She looked at me.
“Your father.””
I froze.
“My father died before Danielle.””
“I know.””
“Then what are you saying?””
Felicia looked toward the motel room.
“He wasn’t involved when he was alive.””
My confusion grew.
“Then why say his name?””
“Because someone used his old business accounts.””
Rachel stepped forward.
“What?””
Felicia nodded.
“Danielle discovered someone was moving money through accounts connected to your family.””
I stared.
“Who?””
Danielle finally walked toward us.
Her eyes were full of sadness.
“I know who.””
Everyone turned.
Danielle looked at me.
“Marcus.””
My heart broke hearing my name from her.
“The person who betrayed us…”
She paused.
“Was someone you trusted after your father died.””
I waited.
“Who?””
Danielle looked at Felicia.
Felicia looked away.
Then Danielle said:
“Your mother.””
I stopped.
“My mother?””
Danielle nodded.
“She wasn’t dead when I disappeared.””
My head spun.
“What are you talking about?””
Danielle took a shaky breath.
“Your mother helped Nathan cover the money.””
“No.””
The word came out immediately.
“My mother hated dishonesty.””
Danielle looked at me sadly.
“She also hated losing control.””
I couldn’t respond.
Because suddenly, memories appeared.
My mother always criticizing my decisions.
Always questioning my marriage.
Always saying Jasmine was too attached to me.
Always saying I was too soft.
I had ignored it.
Because she was my mother.
And we forgive people we love in ways we never forgive strangers.
“Why?””
I looked at Danielle.
“Why would she do this?””
“Because she believed she was protecting the family.””
I shook my head.
“By destroying it?””
Danielle looked down.
“Yes.””
I walked away.
I needed air.
I needed something solid.
Because every person I loved had become connected to a lie.
My brother.
My wife.
My mother.
Everyone except my daughter.
My phone rang.
A number I recognized.
My mother’s old assistant.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A nervous voice said:
“Mr. Hale?””
“Yes.””
“I need to tell you something.””
“What?””
“Your mother left something behind.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“A letter.””
My heart stopped.
“Where?””
The woman hesitated.
“She instructed me to give it to you only if Danielle ever returned.””
Everyone looked at me.
“When can I get it?””
“Tonight.””
“Where?””
She gave me an address.
After the call ended, Danielle approached.
“She knew.””
I looked at her.
“Who?””
“Your mother.””
“What?””
Danielle nodded.
“She knew I survived.””
The words felt impossible.
“She knew you were alive?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t she tell me?””
Danielle’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because she was afraid of what you would do when you learned the truth.””
I looked at Jasmine.
My daughter was still standing beside Danielle.
A daughter reunited with her mother.
A moment that should have been beautiful.
But our family was still drowning.
I turned back to Felicia.
“Why did you sell Jasmine’s car?””
Her face changed.
Because that question brought us back to where this all started.
“I needed money.””
“For Nathan?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
“Then who?””
Felicia looked at Danielle.
“She contacted me.””
I frowned.
“Who?””
Felicia whispered:
“The person who has been controlling everything.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Who?””
Before she answered, a car stopped outside.
Everyone turned.
A familiar figure stepped out.
My heart dropped.
May you like
Because the person walking toward us was someone I thought I would never see again.
My mother.
