Chapter 3: The Secret Buried Twelve Years
For twelve years, I believed I knew the story.
Danielle died.
I became a single father.
Jasmine grew up without her mother.
And eventually, I found love again with Felicia.
That was the version of my life I had accepted.
But one sentence from Derrick shattered everything.
*Felicia has been hiding something about Danielle for twelve years.*
I didn’t sleep that night.
I sat in the dark living room, staring at old photographs.
There was Danielle holding baby Jasmine.
There was me standing beside her, smiling.
A family frozen in time.
A family that disappeared too soon.
At 6:15 the next morning, Jasmine came downstairs.
She stopped when she saw me.
“Dad?””
I looked up.
“Morning, sweetheart.””
“You didn’t sleep.””
I forced a smile.
“I had things to think about.””
She walked closer.
“Is this about Felicia?””
I hesitated.
Then I nodded.
Jasmine sat across from me.
“Dad, I’m sorry.””
“For what?””
“For causing all this.””
I immediately shook my head.
“No.””
“But if I hadn’t needed the car—”
“Stop.””
She looked at me.
“You didn’t cause anything.””
I leaned forward.
“The person who made a choice caused this.””
Jasmine looked down.
“I should have told you sooner.””
“Told me what?””
She became quiet.
That silence scared me more than tears.
“Jasmine?””
She twisted her fingers.
“Felicia hated when you weren’t home.””
I frowned.
“What do you mean?””
“She said you only cared about me.””
My heart sank.
“She said I ruined her marriage.””
I closed my eyes.
“She said that?””
Jasmine nodded.
“But I didn’t believe her.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because every time I did, you looked happy.””
That hurt.
“What?””
“You loved her.””
I stared at my daughter.
“And I thought if I told you, you’d lose the only person who made you happy.””
I felt ashamed.
Because my daughter had been protecting me.
A child had been carrying the emotional weight of an adult.
I reached across the table and held her hand.
“You never have to protect me from the truth.””
She nodded.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A woman’s voice spoke.
“Is this Marcus Hale?””
“Yes.””
“My name is Evelyn Carter.””
The name meant nothing.
Until she continued.
“I knew your wife Danielle.””
I stood up.
“What?””
Jasmine looked at me.
“Who is this?””
The woman paused.
“I’m calling because I heard Felicia’s name came up.””
My grip tightened.
“How do you know Felicia?””
“Because she came to see me twelve years ago.””
Everything became silent.
“Why?””
The woman hesitated.
“Because she wanted me to change a document.””
“What document?””
A long pause.
Then:
“Your first wife’s medical records.””
I stopped breathing.
“What?””
“Mr. Hale…”
Her voice softened.
“I’m sorry. You deserved to know the truth years ago.””
My hand shook.
“What truth?””
The woman took a breath.
“Danielle’s death wasn’t as simple as you were told.””
I looked at Jasmine.
She was watching my face.
Terrified.
“Explain.””
“I can’t over the phone.””
“Then meet me.””
Another pause.
“Today.””
“Where?””
She gave me an address.
Before hanging up, she said one final thing.
“Marcus, before you meet me…”
“Yes?””
“Ask Felicia why she was at the hospital the night Danielle died.””
The call ended.
I stood frozen.
Because there was only one problem.
Felicia had always told me she never went to that hospital.
She told me she had never met Danielle.
She told me she didn’t know my family until years later.
But now someone was telling me otherwise.
I turned toward Jasmine.
“Sweetheart.””
She looked worried.
“What?””
I grabbed my keys.
“I need you to stay here.””
Her face changed.
“Dad?””
“I’ll explain everything.””
“Is it about Mom?””
I stopped.
Because children always know more than adults think.
“How did you know?””
Jasmine looked at the old photograph on the table.
“Because Felicia once told me…”
Her voice shook.
“She said my mom wasn’t the person you thought she was.””
My blood ran cold.
“What else did she say?””
Jasmine looked toward the front window.
Then whispered:
“She said she was the reason my mom died.””
I couldn’t move.
I couldn’t speak.
And before I could ask what she meant, my front door slowly opened.
A voice came from the hallway.
“Because she was.””
I turned.
Felicia stood there.
