Chapter 4: The Woman Who Came Back

For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.

Felicia stood in my doorway with a folder pressed against her chest.

But she wasn’t alone.

Behind her was a woman I had not seen in twelve years.

A woman I had buried in my memories.

A woman whose face had appeared in old photographs, hospital records, and dreams I never admitted I still had.

“Danielle?””

The name escaped my mouth before my mind could catch up.

The woman standing behind Felicia lowered her eyes.

But it wasn’t Danielle.

It was someone who looked exactly like her.

Her sister.

Rachel.

I hadn’t seen Rachel since the funeral.

She looked older now.

The same dark hair.

The same tired eyes.

The same expression Danielle had when she was about to tell me something painful.

Jasmine stood frozen beside me.

“Dad…”

I couldn’t look away.

“Rachel?””

She nodded slowly.

“Hi, Marcus.””

My hand tightened around my keys.

“What are you doing here?””

Before Rachel could answer, Felicia stepped inside.

“You wanted the truth.””

Her voice was different.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Almost defeated.

“You’re going to get it.””

I stared at the folder.

“What is that?””

Felicia looked at it.

“Everything you’ve been asking for.””

Rachel closed the door behind her.

Jasmine moved closer to me.

I noticed.

She was scared.

And I hated that my daughter had learned to be afraid inside her own home.

“Why is Rachel here?”” I asked.

Felicia looked at me.

“Because I was never the only person keeping secrets.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Don’t do that.””

“Do what?””

“Don’t stand there and pretend you’re the victim.””

Her face tightened.

“I’m not.””

“Then explain.””

Rachel took a breath.

“I think I should.””

I turned toward her.

“Start talking.””

She looked at Jasmine.

“Maybe not in front of her.””

My daughter immediately spoke.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

Jasmine swallowed.

“No more secrets.””

Her voice shook.

“But I’m tired of everyone deciding what I can handle.””

That sentence hit me.

Because she was right.

Adults had spent years protecting her from the truth.

But somehow, the truth had still found her.

Rachel nodded.

“She deserves to know.””

Felicia looked uncomfortable.

“Rachel—”

“No.””

Rachel’s voice hardened.

“You’ve controlled this story for twelve years.””

She looked at me.

“Now he gets to hear it.””

I felt my heartbeat increase.

“What happened the night Danielle died?””

Nobody answered immediately.

That silence was the answer.

Something was wrong.

Rachel opened her purse and pulled out a small envelope.

“Danielle was supposed to leave you.””

I felt the floor shift beneath me.

“What?””

Jasmine gasped softly.

Felicia looked away.

Rachel continued.

“She wasn’t leaving because she didn’t love you.””

“Then why?””

“Because she discovered something.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

Rachel looked directly at Felicia.

“Your wife.””

The room went silent.

Felicia closed her eyes.

“Rachel, stop.””

“No.””

Rachel stepped forward.

“Danielle found out Felicia had been taking money from her company.””

I stared at Felicia.

“What?””

Felicia immediately shook her head.

“That’s not true.””

Rachel pulled out a document.

“Danielle was reviewing financial records before her death.””

She handed it to me.

I looked at the pages.

Transfers.

Accounts.

Names.

My hands started shaking.

Felicia’s name was there.

“You stole from her?””

“No.””

Felicia stepped forward.

“Marcus, listen to me.””

I looked up.

“Were these fake?””

She hesitated.

That hesitation answered everything.

“You lied to me.””

“I was going to explain.””

“When?””

Her voice cracked.

“When you were ready?””

I laughed bitterly.

“You sold my daughter’s car because you needed money.””

Felicia looked down.

“I was trying to fix it.””

“Fix what?””

She didn’t answer.

Rachel did.

“Felicia wasn’t just afraid of losing money.””

She looked at me.

“She was afraid Danielle would expose her.””

The room became painfully quiet.

I looked at Felicia.

“Did you cause her accident?””

Jasmine covered her mouth.

Felicia’s face changed.

“No.””

The answer came instantly.

Too instantly.

“I did not kill Danielle.””

Rachel watched her carefully.

“But you were there.””

Felicia went silent.

My chest tightened.

“You were there?””

She looked at the floor.

“Marcus…”

“You told me you never met her.””

“I didn’t know what to do.””

“You were there?””

My voice became louder.

Felicia finally looked at me.

“Yes.””

Jasmine started crying.

I barely heard her.

“You lied for twelve years.””

“I was scared.””

“Scared?””

I stepped closer.

“My wife died.””

Felicia’s eyes filled with tears.

“I know.””

“No.””

My voice broke.

“You don’t know.””

Rachel looked away.

Because even she knew there was no way to explain that pain.

Felicia whispered:

“I didn’t hurt Danielle.””

“Then why hide it?””

She opened the folder.

Inside was another document.

“I found this after the accident.””

I took it.

It was a letter.

From Danielle.

To me.

But it had never reached me.

My hands trembled as I read the first line.

*Marcus, if you’re reading this, something happened before I could tell you myself.*

I looked up.

“Where did you get this?””

Felicia looked ashamed.

“I took it.””

My stomach dropped.

“You took her letter?””

“I panicked.””

“You stole my last words from my wife?””

“I was trying to protect myself.””

The honesty was almost worse.

I looked at Rachel.

“How did you find out?””

Rachel sighed.

“Because Danielle mailed me a copy.””

I looked confused.

“Why?””

“Because she didn’t trust that anyone around her was telling the truth.””

The room went silent.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

From an unknown number.

I opened it.

My blood ran cold.

It was a picture.

A hospital security camera.

Timestamped twelve years ago.

And in the image was Felicia.

Standing outside Danielle’s hospital room.

But she wasn’t alone.

Someone was standing beside her.

Someone I recognized.

Someone who had no reason to be there.

I looked at Rachel.

“Who is that?””

Rachel’s face turned pale.

“That’s the person who destroyed everything.””

I zoomed in on the picture.

And my hands went numb.

May you like

Because standing beside Felicia was my own brother.

Nathan.
