Chapter 7: The Signature That Changed Everything
For a moment, nobody moved.
The doctor looked at us, clearly unaware that he had just dropped another piece of a puzzle that had been destroying my life one secret at a time.
My emergency contact.
Changed yesterday.
By Eleanor Sterling.
I stared at Julian.
He looked just as shocked as I felt.
“Mom changed it?””
His voice was quiet.
The doctor nodded.
“Yes. According to the system, the update was authorized yesterday afternoon.””
I felt a strange numbness spread through me.
Yesterday afternoon.
I remembered yesterday afternoon.
I had been sitting on the nursery floor, folding tiny blue pajamas.
Julian had walked in carrying a cup of tea.
He had kissed my forehead.
He had asked me if I was nervous about becoming a mother.
I had laughed and said, “Only every second of every day.””
And he had smiled.
Meanwhile, his mother had been changing my medical information.
Without asking me.
Without telling me.
Without my permission.
“Why would she do that?”” I whispered.
Nobody answered.
The doctor looked between us.
“Is there a problem?””
I almost laughed.
A problem.
That word felt too small.
There wasn’t one problem.
There was an entire hidden world I had accidentally stepped into.
I looked at Julian.
“Tell him.””
He frowned.
“Tell him what?””
“Tell him if you knew.””
“Claire…”
“No.””
My voice hardened.
“Tell him if you knew your mother had access to my medical records.””
Julian looked down.
That was enough.
The doctor’s expression changed.
“Mr. Sterling?””
Julian rubbed his face.
“I didn’t know.””
Vanessa, who was still near the doorway, let out a quiet breath.
Nobody believed him.
Not even him.
The doctor looked uncomfortable.
“I’m going to step outside for a moment. We need to sort out the contact issue, but the priority is the baby.””
After he left, the silence returned.
I looked at Julian.
“How much control does your mother have over your life?””
He looked hurt.
“That’s not fair.””
I stared at him.
“Fair?””
The word came out almost as a whisper.
“You want to talk about fair?””
I pointed toward the door.
“Your mother locked me in a bathroom.””
He flinched.
“She changed my emergency contact.””
He looked away.
“She hid your child from you.””
His eyes moved toward Vanessa.
“She destroyed another woman’s life.””
I swallowed.
“And you still want me to believe you are just another victim?””
Julian looked like he wanted to argue.
But he couldn’t.
Because every argument led back to the same thing.
He allowed it.
Maybe not intentionally.
Maybe not cruelly.
But he allowed it.
Vanessa stepped closer.
“Claire.””
I looked at her.
“I know what you’re thinking.””
“Do you?””
She nodded.
“You’re wondering how someone can love you and still hurt you.””
The sentence hit me harder than I expected.
Because she understood.
She had lived it.
“I spent years asking myself the same question,” she continued.
Julian looked at her.
“Vanessa…”
She turned toward him.
“No, Julian.””
Her voice was calm.
“You don’t get to stop this conversation anymore.””
The room went silent.
“You were not the only person your mother controlled.””
Julian stared at her.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa looked at me.
Then back at him.
“It means she didn’t just take my daughter away.””
My stomach tightened.
“What else did she do?””
Vanessa hesitated.
Then she reached into her bag.
She pulled out a small envelope.
“I kept this for six years.””
Julian looked confused.
“What is it?””
She handed it to me.
I looked at her.
“Why me?””
“Because you’re the only person who still has a chance to stop this.””
My fingers shook as I opened the envelope.
Inside was a photocopy.
A document.
At first, I didn’t understand what I was seeing.
Then I saw the name.
Mine.
My full legal name.
My eyes moved lower.
And my breath disappeared.
“What is this?””
Julian stepped closer.
“Claire?””
I held up the paper.
“This is a consent form.””
Vanessa nodded.
“Yes.””
“For what?””
Her eyes filled with sadness.
“For an adoption arrangement.””
The room spun.
I looked at Julian.
“No.””
He immediately shook his head.
“I don’t know anything about that.””
I looked back at the document.
It was dated five years ago.
Before I met Julian.
Before our wedding.
Before my pregnancy.
My name was there.
But I had never signed it.
“Why is my name on this?””
Vanessa looked at Julian.
“That’s what I was trying to find out.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What does my name have to do with your daughter?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“When Eleanor came to the hospital, she told me she had a solution.””
My grip tightened around the paper.
“What solution?””
“She said the Sterling family couldn’t have a scandal.””
Julian’s face changed.
“She said…”
Vanessa looked down.
“She said Julian needed a clean future.””
The words made my skin crawl.
“A clean future?””
Vanessa nodded.
“She told me that if I disappeared, Julian could eventually marry someone who fit into the Sterling family.””
I stared.
“And she already had paperwork prepared?””
“Yes.””
I looked at the document again.
My name.
My identity.
My signature.
Except the signature wasn’t mine.
My heart began pounding.
“This is fake.””
Vanessa nodded.
“I know.””
“Then why does it have my name?””
“Because Eleanor knew who Julian would marry.””
I froze.
“What?””
Vanessa’s voice became quiet.
“She had been watching you.””
The room went silent.
Julian stepped back.
“No.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Yes.””
“That’s impossible.””
“Is it?””
She looked toward me.
“Ask your wife when your first meeting with Julian happened.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Vanessa continued.
“Ask her if she remembers the restaurant.””
My mouth went dry.
The restaurant.
I remembered.
Of course I remembered.
It was where Julian and I first met.
A small Italian place downtown.
I had been late because of work.
He had been sitting near the window.
He had smiled.
He had said:
“You look like someone who almost didn’t come.””
And I had laughed.
It felt like the beginning of my life.
But now…
“What does that have to do with anything?””
Vanessa looked at Julian.
“Tell her.””
Julian went completely still.
“Tell her what?””
Vanessa’s expression broke.
“You knew about Claire before you met her.””
I looked at my husband.
The room stopped.
“Julian?””
He didn’t speak.
“Julian.””
His eyes filled with fear.
Not confusion.
Fear.
And suddenly, I understood.
The message.
The photos.
The secrets.
The locked bathroom.
Everything had been leading here.
“You knew me before we met.””
His silence was an answer.
I felt like I couldn’t breathe.
“No.””
Julian stepped toward me.
“Claire, listen.””
“No.””
“Please.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“Tell me the truth.””
He stopped.
“Did you know who I was?””
A long pause.
Then:
“Yes.””
The word destroyed me.
I looked away.
Every memory shifted.
Our first date.
Our first kiss.
The day he proposed.
The wedding.
The nursery.
Was any of it real?
“Why?””
His voice cracked.
“It wasn’t supposed to happen like that.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Like what?””
He looked at the floor.
“I was supposed to meet you because my mother thought you were…”
He stopped.
“Thought I was what?””
He couldn’t say it.
Vanessa did.
“Useful.””
The room went completely still.
Julian closed his eyes.
And that was when I knew.
The betrayal wasn’t one secret.
It wasn’t one woman.
It wasn’t one child.
My entire marriage had been built on something I never knew existed.
A plan.
A decision.
A version of my life written by someone else.
The door opened suddenly.
The doctor rushed back in.
“Claire, we need to move you to delivery.””
Everyone turned.
I looked at him.
“Why?””
His expression was serious.
“Because your baby’s heart rate has changed.””
My blood ran cold.
“What does that mean?””
He looked at the monitor.
“We need to deliver soon.””
Julian grabbed my hand.
This time I let him.
Not because I trusted him.
Because I was terrified.
As the nurses moved my bed toward the delivery room, I heard my phone buzz.
Another message.
Vanessa.
I opened it.
Only one sentence.
*Claire, there’s one more thing Eleanor Sterling never told you.*
My hands shook.
May you like
The next message appeared.
*Your baby wasn’t the first child she tried to take from this family.*
