Chapter 6: The Child Behind the Lie

The room became completely silent.

Not the peaceful kind of silence.

The kind that comes right before something breaks.

I looked at Vanessa.

Then at Julian.

Then back at Vanessa.

“Another child?””

The words came out barely above a whisper.

Julian’s face had lost all color.

“Claire.””

I turned toward him.

“No.””

My voice was sharper than I expected.

“No, don’t say my name like that.””

The monitor beside me continued recording my baby’s heartbeat.

A steady rhythm.

A reminder that there was still something innocent in this room.

Something untouched by lies.

Vanessa stood near the doorway, clutching her coat with both hands.

She looked nervous.

Not because she was afraid of Julian.

Because she was afraid of what the truth would do.

“I didn’t want to come here like this,” she said softly.

I looked at her.

“Then why did you?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because you deserved to know.””

Julian stepped forward.

“Vanessa, stop.””

She looked at him.

And something changed in her expression.

Years of pain.

Years of anger.

Years of waiting.

“You still do that.””

His brow tightened.

“Do what?””

“Try to control the moment when the truth becomes inconvenient.””

The words hit him.

Because they were true.

I looked at Julian.

“Is she lying?””

He didn’t answer.

That was becoming his favorite response.

Silence.

Avoidance.

Waiting for someone else to make the decision for him.

“Julian.””

His eyes met mine.

“I didn’t know.””

Vanessa laughed quietly.

A sad, empty sound.

“Of course you didn’t.””

I looked between them.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa walked farther into the room.

“After I disappeared, I gave birth.””

My throat tightened.

“Where?””

She looked down.

“In a small hospital three hours away.””

Julian stared at her.

“You had the baby?””

“Yes.””

His face changed.

A mixture of shock and disbelief.

“You never told me.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“I tried.””

A chill moved through me.

“You tried?””

She nodded.

“I called you.””

“When?””

“After I gave birth.””

Julian shook his head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“No, Vanessa, I never got any calls.””

She looked at me.

“Because someone made sure he didn’t.””

The room went quiet again.

I didn’t want to believe it.

I wanted someone to tell me this was impossible.

A misunderstanding.

A cruel coincidence.

But the worst truths were always the ones that made sense.

I looked at Julian.

“Who?””

He didn’t answer.

Vanessa did.

“His mother.””

My heart sank.

“Eleanor?””

Vanessa nodded.

“She came to the hospital.””

Julian’s expression changed.

“My mother?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Two days after our daughter was born.””

The word daughter hung in the room.

Our daughter.

Julian looked like the ground had disappeared beneath him.

“You had a daughter?””

Vanessa’s eyes softened.

“Yes.””

A tear fell down her cheek.

“She had your eyes.””

Julian sat down.

Slowly.

Like his body couldn’t hold the weight of what he had just heard.

“What happened?””

Vanessa looked away.

“She told me I had to leave.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

“Because the Sterling family couldn’t survive another scandal.””

I almost couldn’t process it.

“A baby was a scandal?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Not the baby.””

Her voice broke.

“Me.””

Julian covered his face with his hands.

I watched him.

Part of me wanted to feel sorry for him.

I did.

But another part of me couldn’t forget.

He wasn’t a child.

He was a grown man.

He had choices.

He had a phone.

He had a car.

He had money.

He had power.

And somehow, he had never found the woman carrying his child.

“Where is she now?”” I asked.

Vanessa looked at me.

“Who?””

“Your daughter.””

Her expression changed.

“She’s six years old.””

Six.

A child who had existed for six years.

Six birthdays.

Six Christmas mornings.

Six years of first words.

First steps.

First days of school.

And Julian had missed all of it.

My stomach twisted.

Not because of Vanessa.

Not because of jealousy.

Because I was looking at the man who was about to become a father to my child.

And I wondered if he was capable of being one.

“Does she know about him?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

Julian looked up.

“Why?””

The pain in Vanessa’s eyes was immediate.

“Because I didn’t want her to grow up feeling abandoned.””

The sentence destroyed him.

I saw it.

Because somewhere inside, Julian knew.

That was exactly what had happened.

He had abandoned them.

Even if he hadn’t meant to.

Even if he believed his own excuses.

A person can still leave a hole in someone’s life without intending to.

The nurse entered suddenly.

“Claire?””

We all looked over.

She checked the monitor.

“Your contractions are getting stronger.””

The reality returned instantly.

The baby.

The hospital.

The emergency.

Everything else had to wait.

The nurse looked around.

“Who is family?””

Nobody answered.

I almost laughed.

Family.

What a strange word.

Julian stepped forward.

“I’m her husband.””

Vanessa looked down.

The nurse nodded.

“Only one person can stay right now.””

I looked at Julian.

Then at Vanessa.

My mind was screaming.

My heart was exhausted.

“I need everyone to leave.””

Julian’s face fell.

“Claire.””

“No.””

I looked at him.

“Not yet.””

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Vanessa nodded quietly.

“I understand.””

She turned toward the door.

“Wait.””

She stopped.

I looked at her.

“Before you go…”

She waited.

“Why did you send me that message?””

Her face changed.

“Because I saw what they were doing to you.””

“What do you mean?””

She looked toward the hallway.

“Eleanor knew you were pregnant.””

I frowned.

“Of course she knew.””

“No.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“She knew something else.””

A strange feeling moved through me.

“What?””

Vanessa lowered her voice.

“She knew your baby might be born early.””

The room went still.

“What?””

Vanessa looked at Julian.

Then back at me.

“She knew.””

I felt cold.

“How?””

Vanessa hesitated.

Then she said:

“Because I heard her talking about it.””

Julian stood.

“Where?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“At Sterling Ridge.””

My heart began racing.

“When?””

“Two weeks ago.””

Two weeks.

While I was preparing the nursery.

While I was buying tiny clothes.

While I was trusting my husband.

“What did she say?””

Vanessa’s expression turned serious.

“She said if the baby came early, it would be easier.””

I stared.

“Easier?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Because then she could control the situation before you had a chance to learn the truth.””

Julian stepped back.

“No.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“You still don’t believe it.””

He shook his head.

“My mother wouldn’t…”

But even he couldn’t finish the sentence.

Because maybe he was finally remembering.

Every time Eleanor controlled a decision.

Every time she erased a problem.

Every time she protected the Sterling name.

I looked at Julian.

“Did your mother know I was having a boy?””

He froze.

I knew immediately.

He did.

“Julian?””

He looked away.

My blood ran cold.

“What did she tell you?””

He swallowed.

“She asked about the baby’s due date.””

“And?””

“And she asked if you had any complications.””

I stared at him.

“Why would she ask that?””

No one answered.

The door opened.

A doctor walked in holding a file.

“Claire?””

I turned.

“Yes?””

He looked at the papers.

“We need to discuss something.””

The room became quiet.

“What?””

The doctor’s expression was serious.

“Your tests show signs that your labor may progress quickly.””

My heart pounded.

“Tonight?””

He nodded.

“It’s possible.””

Julian reached for my hand.

This time, I didn’t move away.

Not because everything was forgiven.

Because I was scared.

Because my baby was coming.

The doctor looked at the three of us.

“Before we continue, I need to ask something.””

“What?””

He looked at the file.

“Who is the emergency contact listed on your maternity records?””

I frowned.

“Julian.””

The doctor hesitated.

“That’s strange.””

“What?””

He flipped the page.

“The person listed here was changed yesterday.””

My heartbeat stopped.

“What?””

The doctor looked confused.

“Someone updated your emergency contact information.””

Julian stepped closer.

“Who changed it?””

The doctor looked at the screen.

Then read the name.

And every person in the room went silent.

“It was changed by…”

May you like

He looked up.

“…Eleanor Sterling.””
