Chapter 4: The Child Nobody Wanted to Mention
The hallway suddenly felt colder.
Not because the temperature changed.
Because the truth had finally entered the room.
Vanessa wasn’t just a woman from Julian’s past.
She wasn’t just some old relationship Eleanor wanted buried.
She was a pregnant woman.
A woman who had disappeared.
A woman whose name had been erased from Julian’s history.
And now I was standing there, thirty-four weeks pregnant, listening to my husband admit that someone else had carried his child before me.
My hand moved instinctively over my stomach.
My baby kicked.
Almost like he knew I needed the reminder.
I was not alone.
“Where is her baby?”” I asked.
Nobody answered.
That scared me more than anything.
Julian looked down.
Eleanor looked away.
And suddenly, the expensive hallway with its gold-framed family portraits felt less like a home and more like a museum full of things the Sterlings had hidden.
“Julian.””
My voice was calm.
Too calm.
“Where is Vanessa’s baby?””
He swallowed.
“Claire…”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You don’t get to say my name like that and avoid answering.””
His eyes filled with guilt.
“I don’t know.””
The words hit me like a slap.
“You don’t know?””
“No.””
“You don’t know where your own child is?””
Eleanor stepped forward.
“This is not the time.””
I turned toward her.
“You keep saying that.””
My voice rose.
“You keep saying this isn’t the time.””
The pain in my body was becoming impossible to ignore, but the pain in my chest was louder.
“First it wasn’t the time because your daughter was dancing.””
I pointed toward the ballroom.
“Then it wasn’t the time because photographs were being taken.””
I looked at the locked bathroom behind me.
“Then it wasn’t the time because I was supposedly embarrassing your family.””
My eyes met hers.
“When exactly is the right time for the truth?””
Eleanor’s expression hardened.
“When you are thinking clearly.””
I laughed.
A quiet, broken laugh.
“I am thinking more clearly than I ever have.””
Julian stepped closer.
“Claire, please.””
I looked at him.
“Tell me everything.””
He hesitated.
That hesitation told me there was more.
Of course there was more.
Secrets never came alone.
They brought friends.
They brought years of lies.
They brought the pieces of a life you thought you understood.
“Four years ago,” Julian began, “before I met you, I was engaged to Vanessa.””
I listened.
The hallway disappeared.
The wedding disappeared.
Everything disappeared except his voice.
“She and I were together for almost five years.””
“Five years?””
He nodded.
I felt my heart tighten.
Five years.
Long enough to know someone completely.
Long enough to build a life.
Long enough to make promises.
“She got pregnant,” he said.
“And?””
His face changed.
“Things got complicated.””
I stared at him.
“That’s not an answer.””
Julian rubbed his forehead.
“I was twenty-eight. I was working at Sterling Holdings. My father had just put me in charge of a major project. Vanessa wanted us to move away.””
“And you didn’t?””
He looked away.
“No.””
“Why?””
The silence was heavy.
Then Eleanor answered.
“Because he had responsibilities.””
I looked at her.
“No.””
She frowned.
“No?””
“You mean he had a family controlling him.””
Her expression sharpened.
“Watch yourself.””
“No. I want to understand.””
I pointed toward Julian.
“You let your mother decide whether you stayed with the mother of your child?””
Julian’s face tightened.
“Claire, it wasn’t that simple.””
“Then make it simple.””
I stepped closer.
“Did you love her?””
He closed his eyes briefly.
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt.
Even though I expected it.
“Yes,” he repeated.
The word sat between us.
I had never hated a single syllable more.
“Then why did you marry me?””
His eyes opened.
“Because I loved you too.””
I stared at him.
That answer should have comforted me.
It didn’t.
Because suddenly I realized something terrifying.
Julian was capable of loving someone and still abandoning them.
He was capable of making promises and breaking them.
He was capable of holding my hand while keeping an entire life hidden from me.
“What happened to Vanessa?”” I asked.
Julian went quiet.
Eleanor interrupted.
“She left.””
I looked at her.
“Why?””
“Because she wanted something we couldn’t give her.””
My eyebrows pulled together.
“What?””
“Freedom.””
The way she said it made the word sound like a crime.
I stared.
“Freedom?””
“Yes.””
Eleanor’s voice became colder.
“She wanted Julian to leave his family. She wanted him to walk away from everything he had built.””
I looked at Julian.
“Is that true?””
He didn’t answer.
“Julian.””
“She gave me an ultimatum.””
“What ultimatum?””
His voice dropped.
“Her or my family.””
“And you chose them.””
He looked away.
That was answer enough.
A painful pressure moved through my stomach.
I grabbed the wall again.
Julian immediately reached toward me.
This time, I let him.
Not because I forgave him.
Because I needed support.
Because my body was exhausted.
Because my baby mattered more than my anger.
“I need a hospital.””
“Yes,” Julian said quickly.
But before he could move, Eleanor spoke.
“Wait.””
I looked at her.
My disbelief was almost stronger than my pain.
“Are you serious?””
“There is something else.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“No more secrets.””
Julian looked nervous.
“Mom.””
But Eleanor ignored him.
“You deserve to know the full story.””
I almost smiled.
“Do I?””
“Yes.””
“Why now?””
She didn’t answer.
Because the reason was obvious.
The secret was already exposed.
There was no reason left to protect it.
“What happened to Vanessa?”” I asked again.
Eleanor’s face changed.
A tiny crack appeared.
“She lost the baby.””
My breath caught.
The hallway became silent.
Julian looked at the floor.
I felt a wave of sadness before I could stop it.
A baby.
A child who never got a chance.
“Was she okay?”” I whispered.
Nobody answered.
That scared me.
“Was she okay?””
Julian finally spoke.
“No.””
His voice broke.
“She wasn’t.””
For the first time that night, I saw the pain he had been hiding.
Not the guilt.
Not fear of being caught.
Real pain.
“She blamed me,” he said.
I looked at him.
“Did she have a reason?””
He closed his eyes.
“I don’t know.””
I believed him.
Because that was the worst part.
Julian didn’t know.
He moved through life avoiding hard choices until they disappeared.
But they never disappeared.
They just became someone else’s pain.
A sudden sharp pain cut through me.
I gasped.
Julian looked alarmed.
“Claire?””
“I need to go.””
This time, nobody argued.
No one mentioned photographs.
No one mentioned Seraphina.
No one mentioned timing.
Julian grabbed his phone.
“I’m calling an ambulance.””
I watched him dial.
The man who should have done this an hour ago.
The man who had needed a disaster to finally act.
Eleanor stepped closer.
“Claire.””
I looked at her.
Her expression was different.
Less angry.
More afraid.
“What?””
“There’s one thing Julian hasn’t told you.””
I felt my entire body tense.
I was so tired of secrets.
So tired of discovering new rooms in a house I thought I knew.
“What now?””
Eleanor looked at Julian.
He stopped dialing.
“Mom.””
Her eyes moved back to me.
“Vanessa didn’t disappear because she wanted to leave.””
My heartbeat slowed.
“What does that mean?””
Julian’s face turned pale.
“Mom, stop.””
But Eleanor continued.
“She disappeared because she found out something about the Sterling family.””
The hallway seemed to tilt.
“What?””
Eleanor whispered:
“Something she was going to expose.””
Julian grabbed his mother’s arm.
“Enough.””
I stared at him.
“Expose what?””
Nobody spoke.
Then my phone buzzed.
The same unknown number.
Vanessa.
One new message.
I opened it.
And my hands began shaking.
*Claire, I know you just heard about my baby. But there is something Julian never told you.*
A second message appeared.
*Your husband did not lose me. His family took me away.*
I looked up at Julian.
He was staring at my phone.
May you like
And for the first time all night…
I saw fear in his eyes.
