Chapter 8: The Blue Ledger
Bellavita was closed by the time we arrived.
Sofia met us at the side entrance.
Her face was pale.
She locked the door behind us.
“The police have already taken photographs,” she said.
“Did they find whoever broke in?””
“No.””
“Then how did they get past security?””
Sofia looked at Daniel.
“Someone used an executive access code.””
“Whose?””
“Charles Bell's.””
Daniel swore.
We followed her downstairs.
The private records room had been torn apart.
File boxes lay open.
Cabinet drawers had been pulled out.
Papers covered the floor.
But one thing was untouched.
My membership file.
Sofia pointed to it.
“They didn't take it.””
“They wanted me to see the message.””
“Yes.””
I stepped closer.
Written inside the folder was the sentence she'd read over the phone.
*THOMAS SHOULD HAVE TOLD YOU THE WHOLE STORY.*
I touched the paper.
“He did.””
Daniel shook his head.
“Not all of it.””
“What aren't we seeing?””
Sofia turned toward the wall.
“Look.””
She pointed at a framed photograph.
Thomas stood in the center of it, surrounded by Bellavita's founders.
I knew the picture.
I'd seen it countless times.
But Sofia removed it from the wall.
Behind it was a small metal compartment.
My breath caught.
“What is that?””
“A safe.””
Daniel examined the lock.
“Do you know the combination?””
Sofia shook her head.
I stepped closer.
There were four tiny numbers engraved beside the keypad.
2-5-8-1.
I stared.
“My wedding date.””
Daniel nodded.
I entered the numbers.
The lock clicked.
Inside was a blue ledger.
For a moment, nobody touched it.
Then I picked it up.
It was heavier than I expected.
The cover was worn.
Thomas's initials were stamped into the corner.
*T.W.*
I opened the first page.
Names.
Dates.
Payments.
Company names.
Bank references.
Then I saw Graham's name.
My heart began pounding.
Daniel leaned over my shoulder.
“Read that line.””
I did.
*Graham Price — consulting arrangement — unauthorized access.*
There were dates beside it.
All from years ago.
“Thomas knew,” I whispered.
“Apparently.””
I turned another page.
There was Charles Bell.
Then Celeste.
Then Vanessa.
Then Adam.
My son's name appeared in a section labeled:
*Potential successor influence.*
I looked at Adam.
He went pale.
“What does it say?””
I couldn't answer.
Daniel read it aloud.
“Thomas suspected Adam was being financially pressured by the Price family.””
Adam sat down.
“Dad knew?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
“I don't know.””
I kept turning pages.
Then I found an entry dated three days before Thomas died.
The handwriting became hurried.
*Graham confronted me today. He knows about the secondary account.*
Another line.
*Charles has agreed to prepare the documents.*
Then:
*If they come after Margaret, the only safe place is the original trust file.*
I turned the page.
Nothing.
The next page had been ripped out.
“Someone removed it.””
Sofia nodded.
“Recently?””
“Yes.””
“How do you know?””
She pointed to the binding.
“The paper fibers are fresh.””
Daniel took photographs.
Then Adam spoke.
“There's something else.””
“What?””
He reached into his jacket.
A small key.
“I found this in Dad's old desk.””
I stared at it.
“Why didn't you show me?””
“I didn't know what it opened.””
Sofia looked at it.
“That's not a normal key.””
Daniel examined it.
“It's a safe-deposit key.””
“Which bank?””
“There should be a number.””
He turned it over.
Engraved on the back were four digits.
*8142.*
I remembered something.
“Thomas had a safe-deposit box.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Where?””
“First Harbor Bank.””
“Does it still exist?””
“Yes.””
I looked at Adam.
“How did you get this?””
“I took it after Dad died.””
My heart tightened.
“You've had it for eight years?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
“That Dad had left something that would destroy us.””
I stared at him.
“What did you think he knew?””
Adam looked at the ledger.
“About Graham.””
“That's not an answer.””
He shook his head.
“I don't know.””
My phone buzzed.
A text from an unknown number.
*OPEN THE BOX. ALONE.*
Then another.
*OR YOU'LL NEVER KNOW WHO KILLED THOMAS.*
I showed Daniel.
He immediately said, “We're not going alone.””
I nodded.
“Of course not.””
But inside, I knew something.
The message wasn't a threat.
It was an invitation.
And someone wanted me to open that box badly enough to risk exposing themselves.
The next morning, Daniel arranged access to the safe-deposit box.
We entered First Harbor Bank at ten.
The vault was cold and silent.
A bank officer brought out the box.
I inserted the key.
The lock opened.
Inside was an envelope.
A flash drive.
A photograph.
And another blue ledger.
I picked up the photograph first.
It showed Thomas standing beside Graham.
Behind them was a warehouse.
On the back, Thomas had written:
*The night before I died.*
Daniel took the flash drive.
“We need a computer.””
The bank officer led us into a private consultation room.
Daniel opened the files.
There were recordings.
Financial statements.
Emails.
Then one video.
Thomas appeared on screen.
He was sitting in his study.
He looked tired.
Older than I remembered.
He stared directly into the camera.
“Margaret,” he said.
My chest tightened.
“If you're watching this, I failed to protect you.””
I covered my mouth.
Thomas continued.
“I need you to understand that the people who are trying to take your assets are not doing it because of money alone.””
Daniel froze.
Thomas leaned closer to the camera.
“They are trying to recover something I found.””
The video flickered.
“What did you find?”” I whispered.
Thomas answered as though he could hear me.
“A hidden account.””
Daniel looked at the ledger.
Thomas continued.
“And the account is not mine.””
The video cut to black.
A second file opened automatically.
It was an audio recording.
Thomas's voice.
“Graham, I know what you did.””
Then another man's voice.
Graham.
“You should have stayed out of it.””
The recording ended.
Adam was trembling.
“Mom…”
I looked at him.
“What?””
“I've heard that voice before.””
“Where?””
He looked toward the door.
“Outside Dad's hospital room.””
My blood ran cold.
“What did you hear?””
Adam swallowed.
“Graham telling someone that Dad wouldn't survive the night.””
The room went silent.
Daniel stopped the recording.
Then the bank officer entered.
“Mrs. Whitmore?””
“Yes?””
“There is one more item in the box.””
She handed me a sealed envelope.
It had my name on it.
I opened it.
Inside was a letter from Thomas.
Only one sentence was written.
*Margaret, the person you think is protecting you is the person who betrayed me.*
I looked at Daniel.
May you like
Then at Adam.
And for the first time, I wondered whether Daniel had been telling me the truth.
