Chapter 7: The Man in the Hallway
The handle stopped turning.
For one heartbeat, nobody moved.
Then Daniel whispered, “Back door.””
Adam grabbed my arm.
“Mom, move.””
We stumbled toward the private office's rear exit.
Another voice came from the hallway.
“There's nowhere to go.””
Graham.
My stomach tightened.
Adam looked at me with pure fear.
“I didn't tell him.””
“I know.””
Daniel shoved open the rear door.
A narrow service corridor stretched behind the office, lit by a single emergency lamp.
“Go,” he said.
We ran.
My shoes struck the concrete floor as we hurried toward the stairwell. Behind us, the office door slammed open.
“Margaret!”” Graham shouted.
I didn't turn around.
We reached the stairs.
Daniel pushed the door open.
“Down.””
We descended two flights before Adam suddenly stopped.
“What?””
He was staring at the phone in Daniel's hand.
“The recordings.””
“What about them?”” I asked.
“The phone is still connected to the office Wi-Fi.””
Daniel looked at him.
“So?””
“So Graham can track it.””
Daniel immediately switched the phone off.
Too late.
A notification appeared.
*DEVICE LOCATION SHARED.*
Adam's face went white.
“He knows where we are.””
We hurried down another flight.
At the bottom, we emerged into the building's underground garage.
Rainwater dripped from pipes overhead.
Daniel pointed toward his car.
“Get inside.””
We piled in.
He started the engine.
Headlights swept across the concrete.
Then another vehicle entered the garage.
A black SUV.
Graham.
Daniel reversed hard.
The SUV accelerated toward us.
“Hold on!””
The tires screamed.
We shot toward the exit.
The security gate began rising.
The SUV was gaining.
Adam twisted around.
“Faster!””
Daniel hit the gas.
We cleared the gate seconds before Graham's vehicle slammed into it.
The barrier bent sideways.
We disappeared into the rain.
For several blocks, nobody spoke.
Then Adam said, “He'll come after me.””
I looked at him.
“He was already after you.””
“No.””
Adam shook his head.
“You don't understand.””
“Then explain.””
He stared out the window.
“Graham didn't recruit me because he trusted me.””
“Why did he?””
“Because he knew I was desperate.””
“Desperate for what?””
Adam's jaw tightened.
“Vanessa.””
I waited.
“She found out she was pregnant.””
My breath caught.
“What?””
“She's pregnant.””
Daniel glanced at him.
“How far along?””
“Eleven weeks.””
I looked at my son.
“Why didn't she tell me?””
“She was going to.””
“What changed?””
“Graham.””
Adam rubbed his face.
“He told us the pregnancy would be impossible to hide if Vanessa went to prison.””
“Prison for what?””
“The financial records.””
“What financial records?””
Adam looked at Daniel.
“Graham used Vanessa's name to move money.””
“How much?””
“About two hundred thousand.””
Daniel's voice was hard.
“And the debt you mentioned?””
“That's part of it.””
I looked out at the rain.
“So Graham threatened Vanessa.””
Adam nodded.
“He told me I could save her if I became trustee.””
“But you weren't trustee yet.””
“I was named successor trustee.””
“That's not control.””
“I know that now.””
“Then what did Graham promise you?””
Adam hesitated.
“Everything.””
My stomach turned.
“Everything?””
“The restaurant stake. Access to the trust. He said once you were declared legally incompetent or dead, I could control the assets.””
I closed my eyes.
“So that's why they forged the death certificate.””
“Yes.””
“And the authorization?””
“To start moving money before anyone noticed.””
“And the thirty-eight thousand?””
Adam nodded.
“The first payment.””
I looked at him.
“You knew.””
“I knew some of it.””
“Some?””
“I didn't know about Dad.””
His voice cracked.
“The death.””
Silence filled the car.
Daniel finally spoke.
“Tell us about the night Thomas died.””
Adam stiffened.
“I don't know anything.””
“You said Graham had documents.””
“I said he showed me documents.””
“Did he ever talk about your father?””
Adam looked down.
“Once.””
“When?””
“About a month before the first transfer attempt.””
“What did he say?””
Adam swallowed.
“He said Dad was going to ruin everything.””
I felt my heart pound.
“What does that mean?””
“I asked him.””
“And?””
“He said Thomas had discovered something.””
“What?””
“I don't know.””
Daniel leaned forward.
“You're hiding something.””
Adam shook his head.
“No.””
“Adam.””
“I swear.””
He pulled out his wallet.
From behind an old photograph, he removed a folded piece of paper.
“I found this in Dad's study.””
I took it.
Thomas's handwriting.
Three lines.
*G.P. knows.*
*Do not trust C.B.*
*If anything happens to me, ask Margaret about the blue ledger.*
My fingers trembled.
“Blue ledger?””
Adam nodded.
“I've never seen it.””
I looked at Daniel.
He stared at the note.
“G.P. is Graham Price.””
“And C.B. is Charles Bell.””
“Yes.””
“Then Thomas knew both of them.””
“Apparently.””
I folded the paper.
“Where's the blue ledger?””
Adam shook his head.
“I don't know.””
Daniel suddenly said, “I do.””
We both looked at him.
“Where?””
He stared ahead.
“Thomas once told me he kept an emergency ledger somewhere outside the family home.””
“Where?””
Daniel hesitated.
“Inside Bellavita.””
I stared at him.
“Why would he hide it there?””
“Because he believed nobody connected to the restaurant would think to search for it.””
I remembered the private membership.
The ownership records.
The hidden verification code.
Thomas had built layers upon layers of protection.
And somehow, every layer was now being attacked.
“Can we get it?””
Daniel nodded.
“If it still exists.””
Adam looked at me.
“What if Graham already has it?””
“Then we find out.””
He reached for my hand.
I almost pulled away.
But I didn't.
His fingers were cold.
“Mom,” he whispered, “I'm sorry.””
I looked at him.
“I know.””
“Do you hate me?””
I swallowed.
“I don't know what I feel.””
He nodded.
“That makes sense.””
We drove toward Bellavita.
But before we reached the restaurant, Daniel's phone rang.
He answered.
“Hello?””
His face changed.
“Who?””
He listened.
Then looked at me.
“It’s Sofia.””
“What happened?””
Daniel put the call on speaker.
Sofia's voice was barely audible.
“Mrs. Whitmore, someone broke into the private records room.””
My heart sank.
“Did they take anything?””
“We don't know.””
“Is anyone hurt?””
“No.””
She paused.
“But there's something you need to see.””
“What?””
“They left a message.””
“What message?””
Sofia's breathing shook.
“They wrote it on the inside of your membership file.””
I waited.
May you like
Then she said:
*THOMAS SHOULD HAVE TOLD YOU THE WHOLE STORY.*
