Chapter 10: What Thomas Left Me

Daniel didn't deny it.

That was what frightened me most.

He simply stood there beneath the fluorescent lights of Bellavita's private office, staring at Graham's message on my phone as though he had been waiting eight years for me to finally read those words.

“Daniel,” I said quietly, “why did Thomas change the trust three days before he died?””

He swallowed.

“Because he discovered who was behind the money.””

“Who?””

Daniel looked at Detective Harris.

Then at Adam.

Then finally at me.

“Me.””

The room went silent.

Adam stepped backward.

“No.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I was the one who found the hidden account.””

I stared at him.

“You said Thomas discovered it.””

“He did.””

“You said you didn't know where the money went.””

“I knew.””

“Then tell me.””

Daniel sat down heavily.

“Eight years ago, Thomas discovered that Graham had been moving money through several companies connected to the Price family. But Graham wasn't the person who created the system.””

“Who was?””

Daniel looked at me.

“I was.””

Adam shook his head.

“You're lying.””

“I wish I were.””

Daniel's voice was barely above a whisper.

“I created the first holding structure for Thomas's investments. Years later, Graham approached me. He wanted access to the accounts. I refused.””

“Then what happened?””

“He threatened me.””

“With what?””

“My family.””

Daniel rubbed his face.

“My daughter was twenty-one. She was in college. Graham knew where she lived, who she dated, where she worked. He made it clear that if I didn't cooperate, he could destroy her life.””

I looked at him.

“So you helped him.””

“At first, I moved documents.””

“Forged signatures?””

“No.””

“Then what?””

“Access records. Corporate filings. Internal information.””

He looked at the floor.

“I told myself I wasn't stealing. I was only giving him information.””

I almost laughed.

“That's how every betrayal begins.””

Daniel nodded.

“I know.””

Detective Harris opened his folder.

“Mr. Reeves eventually realized Graham wasn't just trying to access Margaret's money.””

“What was he after?”” I asked.

“The secondary account,” Daniel said.

“The twelve million?””

“Yes.””

“Whose was it?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Thomas's.””

I frowned.

“That doesn't make sense.””

“It wasn't personal money.””

“What was it?””

He looked at the blue ledger.

“Political corruption. Bribery. Shell companies. Payments to people who could make certain problems disappear.””

I stared at him.

“My husband was involved in that?””

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“He discovered it while investigating one of his business partners. Thomas planned to expose it.””

“And Graham stopped him.””

“Yes.””

My voice became cold.

“How?””

Daniel didn't answer.

Detective Harris did.

“Graham arranged for Thomas's medication to be tampered with.””

Adam covered his mouth.

I felt the room tilt.

“No.””

Detective Harris continued.

“The original medical records were altered. The death was classified as natural.””

I gripped the edge of the desk.

“Why didn't anyone investigate?””

“Because the evidence disappeared.””

I looked at Daniel.

“You helped make it disappear.””

His eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.””

Adam turned toward him.

“You killed my father.””

“No.””

Daniel's voice broke.

“I didn't kill him.””

“But you protected the man who did.””

“I know.””

Adam lunged forward.

Detective Harris stepped between them.

“Enough.””

Adam stopped.

His chest rose and fell rapidly.

“You knew all these years.””

Daniel nodded.

“I did.””

I looked at him.

“Then why did Thomas leave me the trust?””

“Because three days before he died, he confronted me.””

I remembered the letter.

If you're reading this, something has gone wrong.

Daniel continued.

“He knew I had helped Graham. He knew I was afraid. But he also knew I had finally decided to stop.””

“Why?””

“Because Graham had changed the plan.””

“What plan?””

“He wasn't satisfied with controlling the companies.””

Daniel looked at me.

“He wanted you dead.””

My stomach twisted.

“Thomas found out.””

“Yes.””

“And that's when he changed the trust.””

“Yes.””

“To protect me.””

“Yes.””

I thought about the strange little membership card.

The Founder's Reserve.

The hidden clauses.

The verification code.

The blue ledger.

Thomas had spent the final days of his life building a fortress around me.

And I hadn't even known I was under attack.

“What happened three days before he died?”” I asked.

Daniel reached into his jacket and removed a folded envelope.

“I've carried this for eight years.””

He handed it to me.

My name was written across the front.

Thomas's handwriting.

Again.

I opened it with trembling fingers.
