Chapter 6: The Girl in the Photograph
The voice beyond the hidden door was calm.
Almost gentle.
“That little girl was never raised as Claire.””
Richard tightened his grip around Caleb.
“Who are you?””
A pause.
Then the door handle moved.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Stay back.””
The handle stopped.
A man spoke through the wood.
“You brought Daniel, didn't you?””
Daniel's face tightened.
“Victor?””
“No.””
The voice gave a quiet laugh.
“Victor has already run.””
Margaret stared at the door.
“No…”
Richard looked at her.
“You know him.””
Margaret shook her head.
“I don't.””
The lock clicked.
Olivia grabbed Richard's sleeve.
“Get Caleb behind the cabinet.””
Richard moved immediately.
He crouched beside the boy.
“Stay quiet.””
“Dad…”
“Trust me.””
Caleb nodded.
The hidden door swung open.
A man stood in the passage.
Mid-forties.
Gray suit.
No weapon visible.
No raincoat.
No fear.
He walked into the archive room and closed the door behind him.
Richard recognized him.
Not personally.
From photographs.
He had seen that face in the documents stored in his father's office.
“Jonathan Pierce.””
The man's eyebrows lifted.
“So you remember.””
Richard stood.
“You worked for my father.””
“I did.””
“You work for Victor now?””
Jonathan shook his head.
“I worked for whoever paid me.””
Olivia stepped between them.
“Who are you really?””
Jonathan looked at her.
“Someone trying to keep a six-year-old alive.””
Richard's expression hardened.
“You threatened us.””
“I warned you.””
“You broke into my house.””
“Because your house was already compromised.””
Jonathan pulled out a phone.
He placed it on the table.
A live security feed appeared.
The front of Richard's house.
Police lights flashed in the distance.
Men in black were leaving through the broken door.
Richard stared.
“Who are they?””
“Victor's former security team.””
Richard looked at him.
“You said Victor ran.””
“He did.””
“Where?””
Jonathan smiled without humor.
“Somewhere far away from the people who now want him dead.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“What happened to him?””
Jonathan ignored him.
His attention returned to Richard.
“You need to leave this house.””
“No.””
“Then Caleb dies.””
Richard's eyes hardened.
“Don't threaten my son.””
“I'm not threatening him.””
Jonathan pointed toward the folder labeled *BABY B.*
“I'm telling you what the people who have Claire will do.””
Richard's chest tightened.
“You said she's alive.””
“She is.””
“Where?””
Jonathan didn't answer.
“Show me.””
“I can't.””
“Why?””
“Because you aren't ready.””
Richard grabbed him by the collar.
“Six years.””
Jonathan didn't resist.
“My daughter has been gone for six years.””
“I know.””
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
Richard shoved him against the wall.
“Then tell me where she is!””
Jonathan looked directly into his eyes.
“Boston.””
Richard froze.
“Boston?””
“She lives with a family under another name.””
Olivia stepped forward.
“What name?””
Jonathan finally answered.
“Emma Collins.””
Margaret made a strangled sound.
Richard turned.
“What?””
Margaret covered her mouth.
“Emma…”
“You know that name?””
She shook her head too quickly.
“No.””
Jonathan looked at her.
“Yes, you do.””
Margaret's eyes filled.
“I never knew her name.””
Richard stared at his mother.
“You found her.””
“I told you I did.””
“No.””
His voice was barely controlled.
“You didn't just find her.””
Jonathan placed another photograph on the table.
Richard picked it up.
A little girl stood beside a woman in a Boston park.
Six years old.
Dark hair.
A blue coat.
She was holding a stuffed rabbit.
Richard's fingers began shaking.
There was something familiar about her face.
The shape of the eyes.
The small crease above her left eyebrow.
His own mother's family had that same feature.
But there was something else.
Something impossible.
Richard turned the photograph over.
On the back was a date.
*September 14.*
Three days earlier.
He stared.
“She was photographed three days ago?””
Jonathan nodded.
Richard looked up.
“She knows she's my daughter?””
“No.””
“Why not?””
“Because everyone around her was told you were dead.””
Richard's expression collapsed.
“What?””
Jonathan continued.
“Claire's guardians were given records proving her biological parents were both deceased.””
Olivia frowned.
“Forged records.””
“Extremely convincing ones.””
Richard looked at Margaret.
“You did this.””
Margaret shook her head.
“No.””
Jonathan answered before she could.
“Not alone.””
Richard turned.
“Who else?””
Jonathan looked at Daniel.
Daniel went still.
Richard noticed.
“You know something.””
Daniel looked away.
“Daniel.””
“I was trying to find her.””
“For six years?””
“Yes.””
“And you didn't tell me?””
“I couldn't.””
“Why?””
Daniel's jaw tightened.
“Because Emily asked me not to.””
Richard stared.
“Emily was alive when you found Claire?””
“No.””
“Then how could she ask you?””
Daniel took a breath.
“Because she left instructions.””
He reached into his coat.
Another envelope.
Older.
Creased.
Sealed with wax.
He handed it to Richard.
Richard recognized the handwriting immediately.
Emily.
His hands shook as he opened it.
Inside was one page.
Richard,
If you're reading this, Claire is alive.
Richard stopped.
His throat tightened.
Do not search for her until you know who is watching you.
There are people who believe her DNA can unlock something they cannot reach.
They will use you to find her.
They will use Caleb to find you.
Richard read the next line.
And there is something I never told you about the twins.
Caleb was born first.
Claire was born second.
But Claire carried the genetic marker they needed.
Richard stared at the words.
“What marker?””
Jonathan answered quietly.
“The one your father's trust was built around.””
Richard looked back at the letter.
Emily continued:
Your father didn't create the trust for money alone.
He created it because he discovered a genetic operation involving children.
Richard felt his stomach drop.
Olivia took the page.
“Genetic operation?””
Daniel nodded.
“That's what Emily had been investigating.””
Richard stared at him.
“What kind?””
“Identity replacement.””
Richard frowned.
“Explain.””
Daniel pointed toward Claire's photograph.
“If two children share identical DNA, one can be used to make another identity appear legitimate.””
Richard looked at Caleb.
“Twins.””
“Exactly.””
Jonathan walked toward the file cabinet.
“Your father's money wasn't simply hidden behind Claire's DNA.””
He opened a drawer.
“It was hidden behind Claire's DNA because your father expected someone to try to steal her identity.””
Richard stared.
“Why?””
Jonathan pulled out another document.
“This.””
Olivia read it.
Her face changed.
“This is a legal transfer.””
Richard looked over her shoulder.
The beneficiary was listed as *Claire Hale*.
Underneath it was a clause.
*No transfer of assets without verified genetic authentication and independent confirmation from both surviving biological lines.*
Olivia whispered,
“Both surviving biological lines.””
Jonathan nodded.
“Caleb and Claire.””
Richard looked at him.
“So they need both children.””
“Yes.””
“To access the forty-two million.””
“Yes.””
“Then why did Margaret make me believe Caleb wasn't mine?””
Jonathan gave him a hard look.
“Because if you stopped claiming Caleb as your son, no one would suspect that one of the children was still under your protection.””
Richard stared.
Margaret began crying.
“I was trying to keep them apart.””
Richard turned.
“You succeeded.””
“I thought distance would keep them safe.””
“You destroyed my family.””
“I know.””
“You made Caleb think I hated him.””
“I know.””
“You let Emily die thinking you were helping her.””
Margaret covered her face.
“I know.””
Jonathan's phone suddenly vibrated.
He looked down.
His expression changed.
“What?””
Olivia asked.
Jonathan showed them the screen.
A photograph had been received.
Claire.
Standing outside a school.
The image had been taken less than ten minutes ago.
Below it was a message:
*WE FOUND HER.*
Richard felt the blood leave his face.
“Who sent that?””
Jonathan didn't answer.
Another message appeared.
*THE BOY IS NEXT.*
Richard immediately grabbed Caleb.
“We're leaving.””
Jonathan nodded.
“Now.””
They rushed through the underground passage.
At the house above, the rain had stopped.
Sirens wailed in the distance.
Richard carried Caleb through the kitchen toward the garage.
Daniel followed.
Olivia held the documents against her chest.
Margaret stumbled behind them.
At the garage door, Richard stopped.
His black SUV sat under the lights.
Something was wrong.
The driver's door was open.
Richard froze.
“I locked that.””
Daniel looked inside.
“There.””
A tiny red light blinked beneath the dashboard.
“Tracker.””
Jonathan ripped it out.
“Get in another vehicle.””
Richard looked toward his mother's old sedan.
“No.””
He suddenly remembered something.
“Dad's car.””
Margaret stared.
“The vintage Mercedes?””
“Where is it?””
“In the storage garage.””
“Keys.””
She hesitated.
“Margaret.””
She handed them over.
They hurried to the second garage.
The old Mercedes was covered by a gray tarp.
Richard pulled it away.
Dust filled the air.
Daniel opened the passenger door.
“It's still working?””
Margaret nodded.
“Your father maintained it every month.””
Richard climbed behind the wheel.
Caleb sat beside him.
Olivia entered the back.
Daniel slid into the passenger seat.
Margaret remained outside.
Richard looked at her.
“Come with us.””
She stared at him.
“Why?””
“Because you know where this started.””
Margaret slowly got into the back.
Richard started the engine.
The car roared to life.
As they pulled away, Jonathan watched from the driveway.
Richard lowered the window.
“You coming?””
Jonathan shook his head.
“I have one more thing to do.””
“What?””
“Protect Claire.””
Richard drove into the night.
For several minutes, nobody spoke.
Then Olivia's phone rang.
She answered.
“Hello?””
A woman's voice whispered from the other end.
“Is Richard with you?””
Olivia looked at him.
“Yes. Who is this?””
The woman began crying.
“My name is Sarah Collins.””
Richard's hands tightened around the steering wheel.
Olivia listened.
Then her expression changed.
“Where is Claire?””
Sarah's voice trembled.
“She was taken from the school.””
Richard nearly lost control of the car.
“By whom?””
Olivia put the call on speaker.
Sarah whispered,
“I don't know.””
A pause.
Then—
“She left something behind.””
“What?””
Sarah's breathing shook.
“A note.””
Richard's heart pounded.
“What did it say?””
Sarah answered.
“It said, ‘Tell my real daddy I remember him.’”
Richard slammed on the brakes.
The Mercedes screeched to a stop beneath a dark overpass.
Caleb looked at him.
“What happened?””
Richard stared into the darkness ahead.
For six years, he had believed he had lost one child.
Now he knew his daughter was alive.
And someone had just taken her.
Then Margaret whispered from the back seat,
“She remembers you because she met you once.””
Richard slowly turned.
“What?””
Margaret's eyes filled with tears.
“The day Emily died…”
She swallowed.
“I brought Claire to you.””
Richard stared at her.
“You never told me.””
“I couldn't.””
“Why?””
Margaret looked toward the windshield.
“Because Claire wasn't supposed to survive that night.””
And in Richard's hand, his phone suddenly lit up.
An unknown number had sent one photograph.
Claire.
May you like
Standing beside Emily.
But the timestamp on the image was dated six months after Emily's death.
