Chapter 5: The Child They Never Mentioned

“Find the boy!””

The shout from downstairs snapped Richard into motion.

He grabbed Caleb from the hallway and pulled him into his arms.

“Dad!””

“I've got you.””

Caleb wrapped both arms around his neck.

Olivia closed the bedroom door behind them.

“We need another way out.””

Margaret stood beside the desk, staring at the report.

Her face had gone gray.

“They're not here for Caleb.””

Richard looked at her.

“They just kicked my front door in and shouted his name.””

Margaret shook her head.

“They're looking for the other child.””

Olivia's eyes narrowed.

“What other child?””

Margaret couldn't answer.

Richard stepped toward her.

“You said Emily had twins?””

“I said she gave birth to two children.””

“Where is the other one?””

Margaret's lips trembled.

“I don't know.””

“You knew enough to hide it.””

“I knew enough to be afraid.””

A heavy crash echoed from the floor below.

Then another.

A man's voice shouted,

“Check the upstairs rooms!””

Caleb buried his face against Richard's shoulder.

Richard looked at Olivia.

“How do we get out?””

She pointed toward the balcony.

“Can that connect to the neighbor's terrace?””

Margaret answered.

“No. Too far.””

Daniel suddenly appeared in the doorway.

“There is another way.””

Richard turned.

“What?””

Daniel was holding the clinic access card.

“Your father's study.””

Richard frowned.

“My father's study was demolished years ago.””

“Not all of it.””

Daniel pushed aside an old painting.

Behind it was a narrow wooden door.

Richard stared.

“I've lived here for fifteen years.””

“Your mother had this built before you bought the house.””

Margaret's expression changed.

“Daniel.””

He looked at her.

“You never told him?””

“No.””

“Of course you didn't.””

Daniel opened the door.

A dark passage disappeared into the wall.

Richard looked at his mother.

“You knew this was here?””

Margaret nodded.

“Your father used it.””

“Why?””

“To move documents.””

Olivia stepped inside.

“Then let's move.””

They hurried into the passage.

Daniel closed the hidden door behind them.

The sound of footsteps reached the bedroom.

Someone tried the handle.

Richard held Caleb tighter.

The passage smelled of dust and damp wood. A single emergency bulb flickered overhead.

They moved quickly.

At the end was a metal door.

Daniel used the clinic card against a small electronic reader.

Richard frowned.

“Why would a clinic card open my house?””

Daniel pushed the door.

“It shouldn't.””

The lock clicked anyway.

They stepped into a cramped underground room.

Shelves covered every wall.

Boxes were stacked to the ceiling.

Files.

Photographs.

Hard drives.

Old phones.

Richard stared.

“What is this?””

Margaret closed her eyes.

“Your father's archive.””

Olivia immediately began examining the shelves.

“Why would he keep medical records?””

Margaret whispered,

“Because he knew what Victor was doing.””

Richard turned.

“Doing what?””

Margaret pointed toward a metal cabinet.

“Open that.””

Richard unlocked it.

Inside were folders with names written on them.

Emily Hale.

Richard Hale.

Caleb Hale.

And one folder labeled simply:

*BABY B.*

Richard froze.

“Baby B?””

Olivia opened the folder.

The first page contained a hospital record.

Her eyes widened.

“Richard…”

He leaned closer.

A birth certificate copy.

Mother: Emily Hale.

Date of birth: six years earlier.

Twins: Baby A, male.

Baby B, female.

Richard stared.

“A girl.””

Margaret whispered,

“She was born eleven minutes after Caleb.””

Richard looked at her.

“Where is she?””

“I don't know.””

“You keep saying that.””

“Because it's the truth.””

“Then why is there a file?””

Margaret looked toward the ceiling.

“Because someone took her.””

Caleb lifted his head from Richard's shoulder.

“What do you mean, took her?””

Nobody answered.

Richard knelt.

“Buddy, stay close to Olivia.””

Caleb obeyed.

Richard turned back to Margaret.

“Who took my daughter?””

Margaret's voice cracked.

“Victor.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

Margaret looked at him.

“You knew.””

“I knew he wanted the child. I didn't know he had her.””

Olivia looked up sharply.

“Why would Victor want Emily's daughter?””

Margaret reached for another document.

“She wasn't supposed to survive.””

Richard's face hardened.

“Who said that?””

Margaret's eyes filled with tears.

“Your father.””

Richard stared.

“My father wanted my daughter dead?””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“He wanted the child hidden because Victor believed she was carrying evidence.””

“What kind of evidence could a newborn carry?””

Margaret didn't answer.

Olivia opened another file.

Inside was a laboratory report.

“DNA analysis.””

Richard moved beside her.

The report compared Baby A and Baby B.

The conclusion was unmistakable.

“They were identical twins,” Olivia said.

Richard looked at Caleb.

Then toward the folder.

“Why would that matter?””

Daniel answered quietly.

“Because one of them was supposed to be used to replace the other.””

Richard looked at him.

“What?””

Daniel pointed to a photograph.

It showed two infant footprints.

One labeled A.

One labeled B.

“They couldn't fake a genetic match forever,” Daniel said.

“So they needed a child with identical DNA.””

Olivia's face tightened.

“You mean they planned to use the girl as a substitute?””

Margaret whispered,

“They planned to erase Caleb.””

Richard felt sick.

“Why?””

“Because your father had stolen money from Victor.””

Richard stared.

“What does my father have to do with Emily's twins?””

Margaret swallowed.

“Everything.””

She pulled another paper from the cabinet.

It was a handwritten note.

Richard recognized the handwriting immediately.

His father's.

He read it.

*If Richard discovers the truth, tell him this: one child is the key, but the other is the lock. Do not let Victor find both.*

Richard looked up.

“What does that mean?””

Margaret shook her head.

“I never understood it.””

Daniel took the note.

His expression changed.

“I do.””

Richard stared at him.

“Then explain.””

Daniel pointed toward Baby B's file.

“The girl wasn't evidence.””

He turned the page.

“She was the access key.””

“To what?””

Daniel looked at Richard.

“Your father's offshore accounts.””

Richard's stomach dropped.

Olivia frowned.

“How?””

Daniel took a second document from the folder.

“Your father created an account in the child's name.””

Richard stared.

“But she was a newborn.””

“Exactly.””

“What could a newborn's name unlock?””

Daniel's voice became quieter.

“A trust.””

Olivia scanned the document.

“Oh.””

Richard looked at her.

“What?””

“This isn't an ordinary trust.””

She held up the page.

“The funds were protected by a biometric inheritance clause.””

Richard frowned.

“Meaning?””

“The beneficiary had to provide a genetic match.””

Daniel nodded.

“Baby B's DNA.””

Margaret whispered,

“Your father knew Victor would come after the money. So he hid control of the account behind a genetic key Victor didn't know existed.””

Richard stared at the papers.

“How much money?””

Olivia looked at the final page.

Her expression tightened.

“Enough to explain everything.””

“How much?””

“Forty-two million dollars.””

Silence.

Richard looked at Margaret.

“You destroyed my marriage over forty-two million dollars?””

“I didn't know the exact amount.””

“You knew money was involved.””

“I knew Victor would kill for it.””

Richard turned to Daniel.

“Where is my daughter?””

Daniel shook his head.

“I don't know.””

Margaret suddenly said,

“Wait.””

Everyone looked at her.

She walked toward another shelf.

Her hands trembled as she pulled out a small cardboard box.

Inside were photographs.

She turned them over one by one.

Then stopped.

“This.””

She handed Richard a photograph.

It showed Emily sitting in a hospital bed.

Caleb was in her arms.

Beside her was another baby.

A little girl.

Both babies were wrapped in white blankets.

Richard's breath caught.

At the bottom of the photograph, someone had written:

*Caleb and Claire.*

Richard's eyes filled.

“Claire.””

He touched the photograph.

“My daughter had a name.””

Margaret whispered,

“Emily named her Claire.””

Caleb stepped closer.

“That's my sister?””

Richard looked at him.

“Yes.””

The boy stared at the photograph.

“She looks like me.””

“They were identical,” Olivia said gently.

Caleb looked confused.

“Where is she?””

Richard couldn't answer.

Then Daniel noticed something on the back of the photograph.

“Turn it over.””

Richard did.

There was a handwritten message.

*If Richard ever sees this, Claire is alive.*

Richard's hands began shaking.

He looked at Margaret.

“You knew.””

Margaret started crying.

“I suspected.””

“You let me believe my daughter was dead?””

“I thought she was.””

“You thought?””

Margaret nodded.

“After Emily died, Victor took the baby. I spent years trying to find her.””

Daniel stared at her.

“You never told me.””

“I was afraid.””

“Of Victor?””

Margaret shook her head.

“No.””

She looked at Richard.

“Of what would happen when you found out.””

Richard stepped closer.

“What happened?””

Margaret's lips trembled.

“I found Claire.””

The room went silent.

Richard whispered,

“When?””

“Three years ago.””

His face collapsed.

“You knew where my daughter was for three years?””

“I didn't know if she was safe.””

“Where is she?””

Margaret looked down.

“I lost her again.””

Richard's voice rose.

“How?””

“Because someone changed her identity.””

Olivia's eyes narrowed.

“Who?””

Margaret opened her mouth.

Before she could answer, the underground room's lights went out.

A second later, a red emergency lamp flickered on.

Daniel looked toward the passage.

Someone had entered.

Footsteps echoed behind the hidden door.

Richard pulled Caleb close.

Olivia whispered,

“Someone followed us.””

Daniel raised a finger.

“Listen.””

A man's voice came through the darkness.

“Richard Hale.””

Richard froze.

The voice continued.

“We know about Claire.””

Margaret covered her mouth.

May you like

Then the man said something that made Richard's blood run cold.

“And she's not the little girl you think she is.””
