Chapter 2: The Second Envelope
Margaret’s back touched the polished wooden railing at the bottom of the staircase.
For once, she had nothing to say.
The monitor kept playing.
Her younger self appeared on the grainy clinic footage, opening the office door, checking the hallway, and removing two sealed envelopes from her handbag.
One she placed on the counter.
The other she slipped into the evidence tray.
Then she switched them.
Caleb stood beside Richard, clutching his father’s coat with both hands.
“Why did Grandma do that?”” he asked.
Richard looked down at him.
He couldn't answer.
Olivia stopped the video.
The room fell silent except for the rain hitting the windows.
Margaret finally found her voice.
“It isn't what you think.””
Richard laughed once.
There was no humor in it.
“You just watched yourself switch my son's DNA samples.””
“I didn't switch them.””
“You did.””
“I moved envelopes.””
“Those were the samples.””
Margaret straightened.
“You're making a mistake.””
Richard stepped toward her.
“My mistake was believing you.””
Margaret raised a trembling finger toward Olivia.
“She manipulated the footage.””
Olivia folded her arms.
“The original files are stored on the clinic's server. I requested the forensic copy directly from their IT department.””
“You bribed someone.””
“No.””
“You threatened someone.””
“No.””
“You—”
“Enough.””
Richard's voice cracked through the room.
Margaret stopped.
Richard had never spoken to her that way.
Not when he was a teenager.
Not when she criticized his first wife.
Not even when she convinced him to move back into the family home after his divorce.
But now his voice was cold.
“Why?””
Margaret stared at him.
“Why would you do this?””
She glanced at Caleb.
Then at Richard.
Then at the screen.
“I was protecting you.””
Richard's brows drew together.
“From what?””
“From being trapped.””
Olivia shook her head.
“That's your explanation?””
Margaret ignored her.
“You were about to throw your entire life away for a child who wasn't biologically yours.””
Richard looked at Caleb.
“That's what you told me.””
“Because it was true.””
“No.””
His voice softened.
“But you knew it wasn't.””
Margaret looked away.
Richard stepped closer.
“How long?””
She said nothing.
“How long did you know Caleb was my son?””
Margaret's lips parted.
No answer came.
Richard's hands curled into fists.
“Mom.””
She swallowed.
“For years.””
The words barely reached him.
“What?””
“I knew before the wedding.””
Richard stared at her.
Olivia's eyes narrowed.
“Before the wedding?””
Margaret nodded slowly.
Richard looked as though someone had knocked the air from his lungs.
“You knew?””
“I found out.””
“When?””
“Before Caleb was born.””
Richard turned toward the fireplace.
He pressed a hand over his mouth.
Memories came rushing back.
The hospital room.
The first time he'd held Caleb.
The tiny fingers wrapped around his thumb.
Margaret standing at the window, strangely quiet while everyone else celebrated.
He had thought she was overwhelmed.
He had thought she was crying from happiness.
Now he wondered what else she had known.
“You let me love him,” he whispered.
Margaret's eyes filled with tears.
“You were always going to.””
“Then why did you take him away?””
“Because you weren't supposed to marry his mother.””
Richard spun around.
“What does that have to do with Caleb?””
“Everything.””
Margaret's voice grew stronger.
“She was using you.””
“Who?””
“Emily.””
Richard stiffened.
Caleb's mother.
His late wife.
The woman Margaret had spent years criticizing behind closed doors.
Richard shook his head.
“Don't you dare bring Emily into this.””
“She lied to you.””
“You lied to me.””
“She hid things from you!””
“So you destroyed my relationship with my own child?””
Margaret took a breath.
“I thought once Caleb was gone, you'd finally understand.””
“Understand what?””
“That Emily had another man.””
Richard stared.
Olivia moved closer.
“Do you have proof?””
Margaret hesitated.
“Yes.””
Richard's face tightened.
“Where?””
“My bedroom.””
“Get it.””
Margaret didn't move.
“Richard—”
“Get it.””
She looked at him for several seconds.
Then slowly climbed the first stair.
Olivia stepped in front of her.
“I'll come with you.””
Margaret's eyes hardened.
“You don't trust me?””
“No.””
Richard looked at Olivia.
“Neither do I.””
They followed Margaret upstairs.
Caleb stayed close to Richard, holding his hand.
At the top of the staircase, Margaret stopped outside the master bedroom.
She opened the door.
The room smelled faintly of lavender.
Everything was immaculate.
Too immaculate.
Margaret walked to an antique dresser.
She pulled open the bottom drawer.
Inside sat old photographs, letters, bank statements, and a small velvet box.
She ignored the box.
Instead, she lifted a yellow envelope.
“This.””
Richard took it.
His fingers froze.
There was handwriting across the front.
Emily's handwriting.
He knew it immediately.
“What is it?””
“A letter.””
“To whom?””
Margaret looked directly at him.
“You.””
Richard tore it open.
A single sheet of paper slid into his hand.
He read the first line.
Richard,
If you're reading this, something has gone wrong.
His eyes moved faster.
I need you to know that I never cheated on you. The man my mother saw me talking to was my brother's attorney. Caleb is your son. I know that without a doubt.
Richard stopped breathing.
“What the hell?””
Olivia reached for the letter.
“Let me see.””
He handed it over.
Margaret watched them both.
Richard continued reading.
There is something else I haven't told you. Your mother has been trying to convince me to leave you. She says she can make sure you lose everything if I don't cooperate.
Richard's face went blank.
He read the next paragraph.
She told me she has contacts at the clinic.
Olivia looked up.
“Richard.””
He didn't answer.
The letter continued.
If anything happens to me, don't trust Margaret with Caleb.
The room went silent.
Caleb's small voice came from the doorway.
“Mommy wrote that?””
Richard looked over.
Caleb was standing there.
His lower lip trembled.
Richard immediately folded the letter.
“Come here, buddy.””
Caleb walked toward him.
“Is Mommy coming back?””
Richard's face broke.
“No.””
“Did she leave because of Grandma?””
Richard glanced at Margaret.
She looked away.
“I don't know everything yet.””
Caleb looked at the letter.
“Did Mommy say she loved me?””
Richard knelt.
“She did.””
“Did she say you loved me?””
Richard's throat tightened.
“Yes.””
Caleb stared at him.
“Then why did you stop?””
That question hurt more than anything else.
Richard pulled him into his arms.
“I was wrong.””
Caleb wrapped his arms around his neck.
“I thought you didn't want me.””
“I never stopped wanting you.””
“You looked angry every time I talked.””
“I was angry at the wrong person.””
Margaret suddenly spoke.
“You don't understand what that woman did.””
Richard slowly stood.
“Then explain.””
“She was going to take Caleb and leave.””
“So?””
“She was planning to disappear.””
“Why?””
Margaret hesitated.
“Because she knew.””
Richard's eyes narrowed.
“Knew what?””
Margaret looked at Olivia.
Then back at Richard.
“That the clinic wasn't the only thing I had changed.””
Olivia stepped closer.
“What else did you alter?””
Margaret's face tightened.
“My records.””
Richard frowned.
“What records?””
Margaret walked to a small writing desk.
She opened a locked compartment.
Inside were folders.
Olivia immediately reached for them.
Margaret slapped her hand away.
“Don't.””
Olivia stared at her.
“What is in there?””
“My financial records.””
Richard's eyes narrowed.
“Why would that matter?””
Margaret pulled out one folder.
“Because Emily found out I had been moving money.””
“Whose money?””
Margaret didn't answer.
Richard's voice sharpened.
“Whose?””
“Yours.””
He went still.
“My money?””
“I borrowed it.””
“You stole it.””
“I invested it.””
“You stole it!””
Margaret flinched.
Richard looked at Olivia.
“How much?””
Olivia opened the folder.
Her expression changed.
“Richard…”
“What?””
She looked at him.
“This isn't a few thousand dollars.””
She turned a page.
Then another.
Then another.
“There are transfers going back six years.””
Richard's face drained.
“How much?””
Olivia quietly gave him the number.
Richard stared at the papers.
It was enough to bankrupt his company twice.
Caleb shifted closer to him.
Richard barely noticed.
“Why?””
Margaret's eyes filled.
“Because I needed leverage.””
“For what?””
“To protect you.””
Richard shook his head.
“You keep saying that.””
“Because it's true.””
“No.””
He pointed toward the folder.
“You were protecting yourself.””
Margaret's voice broke.
“You don't know what I did to build this family.””
Richard laughed bitterly.
“You destroyed it.””
Margaret stared at him.
Then she whispered,
“There is one thing you still don't know.””
Richard stopped.
“What?””
She looked toward Caleb.
“The DNA test wasn't the only test.””
Olivia's expression changed.
“What are you talking about?””
Margaret smiled faintly.
“I had another sample tested.””
Richard's stomach dropped.
“Whose?””
Margaret said nothing.
Olivia stepped forward.
“Margaret, whose sample?””
Margaret finally looked at Richard.
“Emily's.””
The room went cold.
Richard stared at her.
“Why would you have Emily's DNA tested?””
Margaret's answer came softly.
“Because I needed to know who Caleb's mother really was.””
Richard froze.
Then, from downstairs, the front door slammed open.
A man's voice echoed through the house.
“Margaret!””
Everyone turned.
Margaret's face went completely white.
She whispered one name.
“Daniel.””
May you like
And from the hallway, a stranger shouted,
“Richard, you have been lied to about Caleb from the very beginning.””
