Chapter 3: The Man at the Door
The stranger stood beneath the chandelier, soaked from the rain, his dark coat dripping onto the marble floor.
Richard stared at him from the staircase.
“Who are you?””
The man wiped water from his face.
“My name is Daniel Mercer.””
Margaret gripped the banister.
“Richard, don't listen to him.””
Daniel gave a bitter laugh.
“You're still doing that?””
Richard descended two steps.
“Doing what?””
“Controlling the room before anyone can ask questions.””
Margaret's voice sharpened.
“Get out of my house.””
Daniel didn't move.
Instead, he looked at Caleb.
The boy was standing behind Richard, half-hidden by his coat.
Daniel's expression changed.
For a second, the anger disappeared.
“That's him.””
Richard's eyes narrowed.
“You know my son?””
Daniel swallowed.
“I knew him before you did.””
Caleb peeked around Richard's leg.
Richard immediately moved in front of him.
“Don't come any closer.””
Daniel lifted both hands.
“I won't.””
Olivia stepped down beside Richard.
“Mr. Mercer, you said Richard has been lied to about Caleb from the beginning. Be specific.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Are you Olivia Grant?””
“Yes.””
“Then you're exactly who I was hoping to find.””
Margaret shook her head.
“This is absurd.””
Daniel reached into his coat.
Richard tensed.
“Slowly.””
Daniel pulled out a plastic evidence pouch.
Inside was a small cassette tape and a clinic access card.
He held them up.
“I have proof.””
Olivia stared at the objects.
“Proof of what?””
Daniel looked at Margaret.
“That she wasn't trying to protect Caleb.””
He paused.
“She was trying to hide him.””
Richard's stomach tightened.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel's eyes shifted toward Caleb again.
“It means your mother knew Caleb's identity was connected to someone she desperately didn't want you to meet.””
Richard descended the rest of the stairs.
“Who?””
Daniel answered with one word.
“Me.””
Silence.
Caleb looked up at Richard.
“Daddy?””
Richard didn't take his eyes off Daniel.
“You're saying you're Caleb's father?””
“No.””
The answer came immediately.
Richard frowned.
“Then what are you saying?””
Daniel held the evidence pouch tighter.
“I was the person Emily contacted the week before she died.””
Richard stopped breathing.
“What did she contact you about?””
Daniel looked at Margaret.
“She said she was afraid.””
Margaret's face hardened.
“She was afraid because she was unstable.””
Daniel's jaw tightened.
“Don't.””
Margaret sneered.
“You disappeared when she needed you.””
“I was trying to help her.””
“You left.””
“I was forced out.””
Richard looked between them.
“Enough.””
Both went silent.
Richard pointed toward the evidence pouch.
“Start from the beginning.””
Daniel nodded.
“Six years ago, Emily discovered that someone was draining money from your company.””
Richard frowned.
“My company?””
Daniel looked at him.
“You were losing money and didn't know why.””
Richard slowly remembered.
Several unexplained transfers.
Invoices that seemed legitimate.
Accounts he had never personally approved.
At the time, Margaret had insisted it was an accounting error.
Richard looked at his mother.
“You knew about that too.””
Margaret said nothing.
Daniel continued.
“Emily traced some of the transfers.””
“To whom?””
“Shell companies.””
Richard's voice dropped.
“Owned by?””
Daniel's eyes stayed on Margaret.
“Your mother.””
Richard felt the floor shift beneath him.
“No.””
Olivia immediately opened the financial folder.
“Richard, there are several companies listed here.””
Daniel nodded.
“Most of them were created under different names, but the same law office filed their paperwork.””
Olivia looked at the documents.
“That's enough for a forensic accountant to establish a pattern.””
Margaret snapped,
“You're all conspiring against me.””
Daniel shook his head.
“Emily thought the same thing at first.””
Richard stared at him.
“What changed?””
“She found something worse.””
Daniel pulled another document from his coat.
He handed it to Olivia.
“A medical record?””
“Yes.””
Olivia scanned the page.
Her eyes widened.
“This is from six years ago.””
Richard reached for it.
“What is it?””
Olivia hesitated.
“It's a prenatal appointment record.””
Richard looked at Daniel.
“For Emily?””
Daniel nodded.
“No.””
Richard's chest tightened.
“For Margaret.””
Margaret suddenly lunged for the paper.
Olivia stepped back.
“Don't.””
Margaret's voice broke.
“That record was supposed to be destroyed.””
Richard stared at her.
“You were pregnant?””
Margaret said nothing.
Daniel answered for her.
“She wasn't pregnant.””
Richard looked confused.
“Then whose record is it?””
Daniel pointed to the name.
“Margaret used Emily's identity.””
Richard's face went blank.
“What?””
“She altered the file to make it appear Emily had a high-risk pregnancy.””
Olivia studied the page again.
“Why?””
“To create a paper trail.””
“For what?””
Daniel looked at Caleb.
“So that when the real father question came up, everyone would believe Emily had something to hide.””
Richard felt sick.
He turned to Caleb.
The boy was still watching him.
Olivia spoke quietly.
“There may be another explanation.””
Daniel nodded.
“Exactly.””
Richard looked at them.
“What?””
Daniel took the cassette from the evidence pouch.
“Emily recorded a conversation with Margaret.””
Margaret's face went white.
Richard stared at the tape.
“When?””
“Two days before Emily died.””
Richard's voice became barely audible.
“My wife recorded my mother?””
“She knew she might not survive.””
The room seemed to shrink.
Richard walked toward the old stereo cabinet.
Margaret moved quickly.
“Don't play that.””
Richard stopped.
“Why?””
“Because you don't know what was said.””
“Then tell me.””
She said nothing.
Richard looked at Daniel.
“Play it.””
Daniel placed the cassette into the recorder.
The machine clicked.
Static filled the room.
Then a woman's voice.
Emily.
Richard closed his eyes.
“Margaret, you need to stop.””
Margaret's recorded voice answered.
“I told you to leave my son.””
“I won't leave Richard.””
“He doesn't belong with you.””
“You don't get to decide that.””
“He deserves better.””
“He deserves the truth.””
The recording crackled.
Richard's eyes opened.
Daniel watched him carefully.
Then Emily's voice returned.
“You switched the clinic file.””
Margaret's recorded voice was calm.
“You have no idea what you're accusing me of.””
“I have proof.””
A sharp sound.
Then silence.
Richard stepped closer to the recorder.
Emily spoke again.
“I know about the samples.””
Margaret's voice became colder.
“Then you know what happens if you tell him.””
Richard went rigid.
Olivia whispered,
“Oh my God.””
The tape continued.
Emily's breathing was unsteady.
“You can't keep Caleb away from his father.””
“He isn't Richard's son.””
“He is.””
“I know what the laboratory report says.””
“Because you changed it.””
The recording abruptly cut to static.
Richard stared at the machine.
“That's it?””
Daniel nodded.
“That's the copy I recovered.””
“Where's the rest?””
Daniel looked at Margaret.
“She has it.””
Richard slowly turned.
“Where?””
Margaret didn't answer.
“Mom.””
Still nothing.
Richard's voice rose.
“Where is the original?””
Margaret backed away.
“You don't understand.””
“Then explain.””
“She threatened me.””
“Emily threatened you?””
“No.””
Margaret's eyes filled with tears.
“The person behind Emily threatened both of us.””
Daniel's expression changed.
“What did you say?””
Margaret looked at him.
“You know exactly what I'm talking about.””
Daniel went still.
Richard saw it.
“You two know each other.””
Daniel shook his head.
“Not like she thinks.””
Margaret laughed weakly.
“You were there that night.””
“What night?””
Richard looked between them.
Daniel finally answered.
“The night Emily died.””
Richard's face drained.
“You were there?””
Daniel nodded.
“But I wasn't the one who killed her.””
Margaret whispered,
“You ran.””
“I was chased.””
“By whom?””
Daniel looked toward the staircase.
“No.””
Richard frowned.
“What?””
Daniel walked to the front window.
He peered through the rain.
Then he pulled down the curtain.
“Someone followed me here.””
Richard's pulse jumped.
“Who?””
Daniel looked at him.
“I don't know.””
Olivia moved toward the windows.
“You're sure?””
“I saw the same black SUV outside the clinic tonight.””
Richard approached.
“What's the license plate?””
Daniel started to answer.
Then his phone rang.
Everyone froze.
Daniel looked at the screen.
His face changed.
Richard noticed.
“Who is it?””
Daniel didn't answer.
The phone rang again.
Olivia stepped closer.
“Mr. Mercer?””
Daniel finally answered.
“Hello?””
No voice came through.
Only breathing.
Then a whisper.
“You should never have brought the tape.””
Daniel's face went pale.
The call ended.
At that exact moment, every light in the house went out.
Caleb screamed.
Richard grabbed him.
“Stay with me!””
The room plunged into darkness.
Rain battered the windows.
Somewhere upstairs, a door slammed.
Then came the sound of footsteps.
Slow.
Heavy.
Coming down the staircase.
Margaret whispered,
“They found us.””
Richard tightened his arms around Caleb.
“Who?””
Margaret looked into the darkness.
May you like
And said a name Richard had never heard before.
“Victor.””
