Chapter 7: The Woman Who Saved Them

The tunnel was so narrow that Claire had to turn Lena sideways against her chest.

Behind them, something heavy crashed above.

Daniel stopped.

“Did you hear that?””

Mercer grabbed his shoulder.

“Keep moving.””

“That was Thomas.””

“We don't know that.””

“He stayed upstairs.””

“And he knew exactly what he was doing.””

Daniel looked back toward the sealed passage.

Claire whispered, “Daniel, Lena is here.””

That was enough.

He turned and followed them deeper into the darkness.

The tunnel smelled of wet stone and old earth. A single line of recessed lights flickered along the ceiling, some dead, others glowing weakly.

Lena buried her face in Claire’s neck.

“Mommy?””

“I’m here.””

“Are the bad people coming?””

Claire looked at Daniel.

He crouched while walking.

“No one is taking you.””

“You promise?””

Daniel hesitated.

Then he looked directly at her.

“I promise.””

Lena nodded.

Mercer kept moving.

After several minutes, the tunnel widened into a small underground room.

A steel door stood on the opposite wall.

Mercer entered a code.

The lock clicked.

Inside was a private archive.

Rows of shelves.

Metal cabinets.

Old photographs.

Bank records.

Boxes marked with years.

Daniel stared.

“How long has this been here?””

“Your father built it twenty-eight years ago,” Mercer said.

“For what?””

“To store everything he didn't trust the main house to protect.””

Claire looked at the walls.

“This isn't an archive.””

“No.””

Mercer shut the door behind them.

“It’s a confession.””

Daniel noticed a wooden table in the center.

On it sat a cassette player.

Beside it was the second cassette they had found.

And next to that was a sealed envelope bearing a name.

*EVELYN HART.*

Daniel stared.

“So she knew.””

Mercer shook his head.

“She may have known pieces.””

“Then why is her name on the envelope?””

“Because your father wanted her to hear it before anyone else.””

Claire looked at Daniel.

“Play it.””

Daniel inserted the cassette.

The machine clicked.

Static.

Then Evelyn's younger voice.

“If you're hearing this, I failed.””

Claire stiffened.

Daniel leaned closer.

Evelyn continued.

“I didn't know how much your father had planned when I first discovered the altered records.””

Daniel's face hardened.

“So she knew.””

Mercer raised a hand.

“Listen.””

Evelyn spoke again.

“Daniel was never supposed to know about the original marriage record. Claire was never supposed to find out that I had intercepted the second copy.””

Claire whispered, “Second copy?””

Evelyn answered from the recording as if she could hear her.

“There were two copies.””

Daniel's eyes widened.

“Your father kept one.””

“The other was given to me.””

The recording crackled.

“I destroyed the false divorce filing.””

Daniel looked at Mercer.

“She destroyed it?””

“Yes.””

Evelyn's voice continued.

“But by then Jonathan had already created another.””

Claire shook her head.

“So she was helping us.””

“Partly,” Mercer said.

Daniel frowned.

“Why only partly?””

The recording answered.

“I made a terrible choice.””

A long pause.

“I chose silence.””

Claire closed her eyes.

Evelyn continued.

“I believed silence would keep Daniel alive.””

Daniel whispered, “Alive?””

The voice became unsteady.

“Your father wasn't trying only to control the family. He was being blackmailed.””

Mercer looked at Daniel.

Daniel stared back.

“By whom?””

Evelyn spoke.

“A company called Bellweather.””

Mercer's expression changed.

Claire noticed.

“You know that name.””

Mercer nodded slowly.

“Keep listening.””

Evelyn continued.

“Bellweather had access to private records. Medical records. Banking records.

Government files. They knew things about your father that could have destroyed him.””

Daniel frowned.

“What things?””

The recording crackled.

“I never learned everything.””

“But I learned enough to understand what they wanted.””

“They wanted Lena.””

Claire froze.

The little girl's name sounded terrifying coming through the old machine.

Daniel's hand clenched.

Evelyn continued.

“Not because she was the heir.””

“Not because of the Hart money.””

“They wanted access to her birth records.””

Claire's face tightened.

“Why?””

Mercer looked away.

Evelyn's voice dropped to nearly a whisper.

“Because the hospital made a mistake.””

Daniel stopped the tape.

“What mistake?””

Mercer didn't answer.

Daniel turned.

“What mistake?””

Mercer looked at Claire.

Then Lena.

Then Daniel.

“Lena's blood sample was switched with another newborn.””

Claire went completely still.

“No.””

Mercer nodded.

“It happened during a system outage.””

Claire shook her head.

“That's impossible.””

“The hospital reported it as a clerical incident.””

“You're saying…”

Daniel struggled to find the words.

“Lena may not have been the baby they thought she was.””

The room became silent.

Lena looked up.

“Am I Daddy's baby?””

Daniel immediately crouched.

“Yes.””

He held her shoulders.

“You are my daughter.””

Mercer stepped closer.

“That part isn't in question.””

Daniel stood.

“Then explain.””

“The hospital corrected the file.””

“When?””

“Two weeks after Lena was born.””

Claire's face was pale.

“Who was the other baby?””

Mercer hesitated.

“We don't know.””

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“You don't know?””

“No record of that child remained.””

Claire looked at the shelves.

“Then someone erased it.””

Mercer nodded.

“That's what your father believed.””

Daniel returned to the cassette.

He pressed play.

Evelyn's voice returned.

“I found the second newborn file six days after Lena came home.””

“I knew something was wrong.””

“I confronted your father.””

“He told me never to mention it again.””

The recording stopped.

Daniel stared at the machine.

“That's it?””

The tape had ended.

“There has to be another.””

Mercer looked through the archive.

“There may be.””

Daniel opened drawers one after another.

Bank records.

Contracts.

Photographs.

Medical files.

Then Claire noticed a red folder at the bottom of a cabinet.

She pulled it out.

The cover had three words.

*BELLWEATHER — NEONATAL*

She opened it.

Inside was a hospital intake sheet.

Two babies.

Two identification bracelets.

Two sets of fingerprints.

One name was familiar.

*Lena Hart.*

The other was partially blacked out.

Claire's hands began to shake.

“Daniel.””

He came over.

“What?””

She showed him the page.

At the bottom was a handwritten note:

*Child B transferred at 03:40. No parental authorization.*

Daniel looked at Mercer.

“What does that mean?””

Mercer’s voice was grim.

“It means someone took the other baby.””

Claire stared at the document.

“And replaced the identity?””

“No.””

Mercer pointed to the next page.

“The identity remained with the other child.””

Daniel frowned.

“Then who is Lena?””

Mercer looked at him.

“That’s the question your father spent six years trying to answer.””

Suddenly, a loud metallic clang echoed through the tunnel.

Everyone froze.

Someone had found the archive door.

Daniel reached for the handle.

Mercer stopped him.

“No.””

“Who is outside?””

“I don't know.””

Another clang.

Then a voice came through the steel.

“Daniel.””

Claire recognized it.

Victoria.

Daniel's face hardened.

He stepped toward the door.

“Why are you here?””

Victoria answered from the other side.

“I came to help.””

Claire laughed bitterly.

“After everything tonight?””

Victoria's voice cracked.

“I know what you think.””

Daniel shouted, “You lied to me.””

“I did.””

“You helped erase my marriage.””

“I was trying to undo it.””

“You called Lena a problem.””

“I was terrified.””

“Of what?””

Silence.

Then Victoria said:

“Of Bellweather.””

Daniel looked at Mercer.

Victoria continued.

“Your father wasn't the leader.””

“What?””

“He wasn't even the one who started this.””

Daniel opened the door.

Victoria stood alone in the tunnel.

Her wedding dress was muddy.

Her makeup had run.

She looked nothing like the woman who had stood beneath the flowers earlier.

Daniel stared at her.

“What do you know?””

Victoria swallowed.

“I know who the other baby was.””

Claire stepped forward.

“Who?””

Victoria looked at Lena.

Then back at Daniel.

“Me.””

Nobody moved.

Daniel stared.

“That’s impossible.””

Victoria shook her head.

“I'm the other child.””

Mercer went pale.

Victoria continued.

“The baby taken from the hospital wasn't lost.””

“She was raised under a different name.””

“My name.””

Claire looked at Lena.

Then at Victoria.

Daniel whispered, “You were born that night.””

Victoria nodded.

“Fourteen minutes after Lena.””

Mercer reached for the hospital file.

“No.””

Victoria looked at him.

“Yes.””

She pulled a folded document from inside her coat.

“It was hidden from your father for years.””

She handed it to Daniel.

He opened it.

A newborn record.

Date of birth.

Same hospital.

Same night.

But the mother's name was Claire's.

Daniel looked up sharply.

Victoria whispered:

“That's why they changed your marriage records.””

Claire's face went white.

“They weren't trying to erase Lena.””

“No.””

May you like

Victoria looked at her.

“They were trying to hide that you had twins.””
