Chapter 2: The Video

The ballroom remained frozen.

No one reached for their phone.

No one whispered.

Even the wedding photographer had lowered his camera completely.

On the screen, Daniel sat in the same old apartment Claire remembered.

His hair was longer.

His face was thinner.

And in his arms was baby Lena.

Daniel in the video looked down at the infant and laughed softly.

“Your mom is going to kill me for being this nervous.””

A woman’s voice came from behind the camera.

“Hold her head, Daniel.””

“I am.””

“You’re shaking.””

“I’ve never held a baby before.””

“You’re holding your daughter.””

The room went silent.

Daniel stopped smiling.

He stared at the screen as if seeing a ghost.

Claire knew that apartment.

She remembered the tiny blue couch.

The yellow curtains.

The wooden crib beside the window.

Memories she had spent years trying to bury.

Lena lifted her head from Claire’s shoulder.

“Mommy?””

Claire kissed her hair.

“That’s Daddy.””

Lena watched.

On the screen, Daniel carefully lifted the baby closer to the camera.

“Everybody,” he said, grinning like a foolish, exhausted new father, “meet Lena Hart.””

A few guests gasped.

Daniel continued.

“She’s my daughter.””

He kissed the baby’s forehead.

“My little girl.””

Lena stared at the screen with wide eyes.

“He knows me,” she whispered.

Claire swallowed.

“Yes.””

“He said I’m his daughter.””

“Yes.””

Across the ballroom, Evelyn suddenly moved toward the control desk.

“Turn this off.””

The staff member hesitated.

“Ma’am, I don’t think—”

“Turn it off!””

Evelyn reached for the controls herself.

The screen went black.

For one second.

Then it came back.

A second video.

This time, Daniel stood in a hospital hallway.

He was holding a folder.

A birth certificate.

His voice was clearer.

“I signed everything myself.””

A collective murmur spread through the crowd.

Victoria stepped backward.

“No.””

Daniel looked at her.

Victoria’s face had lost all its color.

The video changed again.

Documents filled the screen.

Marriage records.

Dates.

Signatures.

Pages bearing Victoria’s name.

Then a close-up appeared.

Two versions of the same marriage record.

Different dates.

Different signatures.

But the same official seal.

Someone in the crowd whispered, “They’re altered.””

Another guest said, “That’s impossible.””

Claire looked at Daniel.

He wasn’t watching the screen anymore.

He was watching Victoria.

“Victoria,” he said quietly.

She shook her head.

“I don’t know what this is.””

Daniel took another step.

“Then why is your signature on both?””

Victoria opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Evelyn hurried toward her.

“Daniel, stop this. Someone is trying to destroy the wedding.””

Claire’s eyes narrowed.

“No.””

She looked up at the screen.

“This was planned long before today.””

Lena clung to her mother.

Daniel turned toward Evelyn.

“What did you mean when you called my daughter illegitimate?””

Evelyn’s expression hardened.

“You know exactly what I meant.””

“No,” Daniel said.

His voice shook now.

“I don’t.””

A staff member approached from the side of the stage holding a second folder.

“Mr. Hart?””

Daniel looked at him.

“We found this in the equipment room.””

The man handed over the folder.

Daniel opened it.

Inside was a copy of an old marriage license.

His own name was printed beside Claire’s.

The date was eleven months before Lena was born.

At the bottom was a handwritten note.

Daniel read it once.

Then again.

His fingers began to tremble.

Claire watched his face change.

“What does it say?””

Daniel looked up.

And for the first time that night, he looked terrified.

“Claire,” he said, “this marriage wasn’t supposed to be invalid.””

Victoria suddenly turned toward the ballroom doors.

And ran.
