Chapter 2: The Marriage That Wasn’t Supposed to Exist
Victoria reached the ballroom doors before Daniel could react.
Her veil caught on the handle.
She yanked it free.
“Victoria!””
Daniel’s voice cracked across the room.
She stopped.
Slowly, she turned around.
The wedding dress that had looked perfect ten minutes earlier now seemed absurd beneath the harsh ballroom lights. Her hands were shaking.
“I didn’t do anything,” she said.
Daniel walked toward her.
“Then why are you running?””
“I’m not running.””
“You were standing at the exit.””
“I needed air.””
Daniel held up the folder.
“This says Claire was legally my wife when Lena was born.””
Victoria stared at the document.
Her lips parted.
“It’s fake.””
The staff member who had brought it forward shook his head.
“No, sir. It came from the secure archive case.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Who had access to that case?””
The man swallowed.
“Only the family office, your legal team, and whoever requested the wedding records.””
Every eye in the ballroom turned toward Victoria.
She stepped backward.
“No.””
Evelyn moved beside her.
“Stop looking at her like that.””
Daniel looked at Evelyn.
“Then explain it.””
“I don't have to explain anything.””
“Yes, you do.””
His voice had changed.
It was no longer the controlled voice of a groom trying to save a wedding.
It was the voice of a man realizing someone had been controlling his life.
Lena watched from Claire’s arms.
She pressed her cheek against her mother’s shoulder.
“Mommy, why is Daddy mad?””
Claire looked down at her.
“Because somebody lied.””
“About me?””
Claire hesitated.
Then she nodded.
“Yes.””
Daniel heard it.
His eyes closed briefly.
“Claire.””
She looked at him.
“I never wanted her to be caught in any of this.””
Claire gave a bitter laugh.
“Yet somehow she was the person you chose to abandon first.””
The words landed harder than anything else in the room.
Daniel lowered his gaze.
“I thought…”
“What?””
“I thought you left me.””
Claire’s expression changed.
For the first time that evening, anger gave way to disbelief.
“I left you?””
“You disappeared after the hospital.””
“No.””
Claire shifted Lena onto her hip.
“You disappeared.””
Daniel stared at her.
“That’s not what happened.””
“It is exactly what happened.””
Evelyn interrupted.
“This is ridiculous. Everyone is acting like an old marriage document proves anything.””
A voice came from the crowd.
“It proves the date.””
Another guest stepped forward.
“And the video proves Daniel acknowledged Lena.””
Someone else whispered, “Then why did he call her illegitimate?””
Evelyn spun around.
“Because there were questions about the marriage!””
Daniel’s head snapped toward her.
“What questions?””
Evelyn went silent.
“Evelyn,” Daniel said slowly.
“What questions?””
She folded her arms.
“The kind every family has.””
“That isn’t an answer.””
“There were concerns about whether Claire’s marriage was valid.””
Claire laughed again.
“Interesting.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Why?””
“Because nobody told me.””
Evelyn’s face tightened.
“You were young.””
“I was married.””
“You were emotional.””
“I was pregnant.””
Silence.
Claire’s voice dropped.
“And you knew.””
Evelyn looked away.
Daniel noticed.
His breathing grew heavier.
“You knew Claire was pregnant?””
Evelyn said nothing.
“You knew?””
“I knew there was a baby.””
“A baby?””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Your grandson’s sister.””
Evelyn’s lips pressed into a thin line.
“She wasn’t supposed to be part of your public life.””
Lena lifted her head.
“Why?””
The tiny voice cut through the room.
Evelyn stared at the child.
“Because your mother made choices.””
Claire immediately stepped forward.
“Do not speak to her like that.””
Daniel moved between them.
“Enough.””
For the first time, Evelyn looked afraid of him.
Daniel turned toward the screen.
“Play the video again.””
The technician looked uncertainly at the wedding coordinator.
Daniel pointed.
“Play it.””
The screen flickered back to life.
The hospital hallway appeared again.
Daniel in the video was holding a folder.
He opened it toward the camera.
“My attorney says everything is filed,” his younger self said.
“The marriage certificate, the birth acknowledgment, and the trust documents.””
Claire’s breath caught.
Daniel watched himself on the screen.
Then came a date.
March 14.
The year Lena was born.
A murmur went through the crowd.
The video continued.
Young Daniel looked directly at the camera.
“If anything happens to me, Claire gets custody of Lena. Not my parents. Not anyone else.””
The ballroom exploded into whispers.
Evelyn turned pale.
Daniel slowly looked at her.
“You knew about the trust.””
It wasn't a question.
Evelyn didn't answer.
Victoria suddenly grabbed Daniel’s arm.
“You need to listen to me.””
He pulled away.
“No.””
“You’re misunderstanding everything.””
“Then explain the altered documents.””
“I didn’t alter anything.””
“Then why are you in a video from three years ago talking about changing the marriage records?””
Victoria froze.
Daniel looked at the screen.
The technician had stopped the video.
Daniel turned.
“You have another recording?””
The staff member nodded.
“We found several files attached to the same folder.””
“Play them.””
Victoria shook her head.
“Daniel, please.””
He didn't even look at her.
“Play them.””
The next video appeared.
Victoria was on screen.
She looked younger.
She was sitting in a hotel room across from a man in a gray suit.
The audio was muffled, but one sentence came through clearly.
“I don’t care what the original marriage date says. I need Claire removed from the record.””
A stunned silence fell.
Victoria covered her mouth.
Daniel stared at her.
The man on the video asked, “And the child?””
Victoria leaned forward.
“Once Claire is discredited, the child becomes a problem that solves itself.””
Claire felt Lena stiffen against her.
She immediately turned her daughter’s face into her shoulder.
“Don’t listen,” Claire whispered.
But it was too late.
Lena had heard enough.
Daniel looked physically sick.
He turned to Victoria.
“You said you never knew about the marriage.””
“I was angry!””
“That was you.””
“I was scared!””
“That was you.””
“I didn’t know what he was going to do!””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“What were you trying to do to my daughter?””
Victoria stepped back.
“Nothing.””
“You just said she was a problem.””
“I meant legally.””
“What does that mean?””
Victoria’s eyes darted toward Evelyn.
The movement did not escape Daniel.
“Mom?””
Evelyn’s face went rigid.
Daniel looked between them.
“You both knew.””
Neither woman answered.
Then Claire noticed something on the screen.
Behind Victoria in the old video, a calendar was visible.
March 14.
The same date as the marriage certificate.
Claire walked closer.
“Stop.””
The technician froze the frame.
Claire pointed.
“Zoom in.””
The image enlarged.
A handwritten appointment appeared beneath the date.
*C. Hart — Notary — 4:30 PM*
Daniel stared.
Claire’s voice was barely audible.
“That was the day we signed our marriage papers.””
Evelyn shook her head.
“No.””
Claire turned toward her.
“Yes.””
“That appointment never happened.””
“It did.””
“No.””
Claire’s eyes filled with tears.
“I remember it.””
Daniel stared at Claire.
“What happened after?””
Claire swallowed.
“You came to pick me up.””
“I did.””
“You were wearing that blue shirt you hated.””
Daniel's face changed.
“You remember?””
“I remember everything.””
Claire looked at Victoria.
“And then I never saw the signed copy again.””
Daniel’s eyes widened.
“You said the attorney lost it.””
Claire nodded.
“That’s what you told me.””
“I was told that.””
The room became unbearably quiet.
Daniel turned toward Evelyn.
“Who told you?””
Evelyn didn't speak.
“Who told you the marriage certificate was missing?””
Evelyn's voice was almost a whisper.
“Your father.””
Daniel went still.
“My father died six years ago.””
“I know.””
“And he told you?””
Evelyn closed her eyes.
Daniel stepped closer.
“When?””
She didn't answer.
“When did he tell you?””
“Before the accident.””
Daniel stared at her.
His father had died years earlier.
The date on the document was suddenly more than a piece of paper.
It was evidence of a decision made while everyone had still been alive.
A decision to erase Claire.
To erase Lena.
And maybe to create a new version of Daniel’s life.
Victoria saw the realization forming on his face.
She backed toward the door.
Daniel noticed.
“Don’t.””
She stopped.
“Daniel…”
“Where were you going?””
“I just need to leave.””
“No.””
His voice was quiet.
“Not until you tell me who that man was.””
Victoria looked at the frozen image on the screen.
Then at Evelyn.
Then at Daniel.
She started crying.
Not the careful tears she had shed during the ceremony.
Real panic.
“You don’t understand,” she whispered.
“Then make me understand.””
Victoria opened her mouth.
A phone rang.
Everyone turned.
It was Evelyn’s.
She looked at the screen.
Her expression collapsed.
Daniel saw the caller's name.
*Attorney Mercer.*
Evelyn answered.
“Hello?””
A man's voice came through loudly enough for several guests to hear.
“Mrs. Hart, you need to get out of that ballroom immediately.””
Evelyn stood frozen.
“Why?””
The voice answered:
“Because the original marriage file was just found.””
Daniel took the phone from her hand.
“Where?””
There was a long pause.
Then the attorney said:
“In the courthouse vault.””
Daniel gripped the phone.
“What else is in that file?””
The man's voice dropped.
“Your father left a second letter.””
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
“What letter?””
The attorney hesitated.
May you like
Then said:
“It’s addressed to Lena.””
