Thinking

Chapter 6: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

Daniel did not think.

He ran.

He hit the nursery door so hard it slammed against the wall, then sprinted down the hallway.

“Lena!””

Claire was right behind him.

Mercer shouted something, but Daniel barely heard it.

The staircase blurred beneath his feet.

He reached the foyer and tore open the front door.

Rain exploded across his face.

At the bottom of the stone steps, beneath the twisted branches of an old oak tree, stood the man from the recording.

And beside him was Lena.

Her little hand was trapped inside his.

“Daddy!””

Daniel stopped dead.

Lena wasn't crying.

That frightened him more than anything.

The stranger looked exactly as he had in the six-year-old recording.

Same narrow face.

Same gray eyes.

Same scar cutting through his left eyebrow.

Older, perhaps.

But unmistakable.

Daniel whispered the name.

“Thomas Vale.””

The man's mouth curved.

“You remember.””

Claire reached the steps.

“Let go of my daughter!””

Thomas glanced at her.

“Claire.””

She froze.

“You know me?””

“I know exactly who you are.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Let her go.””

Thomas looked at Lena.

“She isn't frightened.””

“You're holding her captive.””

“No.””

He loosened his grip.

“She came with me.””

Daniel stared at his daughter.

“Lena?””

She looked between them.

“He said he knew Daddy.””

Claire rushed down the steps.

Thomas released Lena.

Claire pulled her behind her instantly.

Daniel moved between them.

He wanted to hit Thomas.

Instead, he kept his voice controlled.

“You're supposed to be dead.””

Thomas gave a dry laugh.

“That was the idea.””

Mercer finally emerged from the house.

The moment he saw Thomas, his face collapsed.

“You.””

Thomas looked at him.

“Still hiding behind other people's names, Mercer?””

Mercer stopped on the steps.

“You shouldn't be here.””

“Neither should you.””

Daniel turned sharply.

“What is going on?””

Neither man answered.

“Answer me!””

Thomas looked at Daniel.

“Your father tried to kill me.””

Claire tightened her arms around Lena.

“Why?””

“Because I found out what he was doing.””

Daniel shook his head.

“My father knew you.””

“He knew me very well.””

“You were his attorney?””

“Before Mercer.””

Daniel looked at Mercer.

Mercer didn't deny it.

Thomas continued.

“I worked for your father for eleven years.””

“And helped him destroy my marriage?””

“No.””

The answer came instantly.

“I tried to stop him.””

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

“Then why were you on the recording?””

“I wasn't.””

“What?””

Thomas looked toward the house.

“The voice you heard was your father's.””

“I know.””

“And the man answering him wasn't me.””

Daniel stared.

Thomas touched the scar above his eyebrow.

“My brother.””

Silence.

Claire looked at Mercer.

“His brother?””

Thomas nodded.

“Jonathan Vale.””

Mercer whispered, “He died six years ago.””

Thomas gave him a cold look.

“That’s what everyone was told.””

Daniel felt the ground shift beneath him.

“Two Vale brothers?””

“Two.””

“Which one worked for my father?””

“Jonathan.””

“And which one survived?””

Thomas looked toward the nursery window.

“Me.””

Daniel's mind raced.

The recordings.

The altered records.

The forged divorce.

The false identity.

“What did your brother do?””

Thomas's expression hardened.

“Everything your father asked.””

“And you?””

“I discovered why.””

Thomas reached inside his coat.

Claire stepped back.

Daniel immediately raised his hand.

“Don't.””

Thomas slowly pulled out a folded document.

He held it toward Daniel.

“I didn't come here to hurt Lena.””

Daniel didn't move.

“Then why did you take her?””

“She found me.””

Claire stared.

“What?””

Thomas nodded.

“She got out of the car when she heard me calling your name.””

Daniel looked at Lena.

“Did you?””

Lena nodded.

“He knew Daddy.””

Thomas looked at her.

“She asked if I was your friend.””

Daniel's chest tightened.

“What did you tell her?””

“The truth.””

“What truth?””

Thomas looked directly at Daniel.

“That your father and I were never friends.””

He lowered the document.

“We were enemies.””

Mercer stepped forward.

“You need to leave.””

Thomas laughed.

“You've been saying that for six years.””

“You're putting everyone in danger.””

“I've spent six years in danger.””

Daniel looked between them.

“Enough.””

He held out his hand.

“The document.””

Thomas gave it to him.

Daniel unfolded it.

His face changed.

It was a bank transfer ledger.

Hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Payments made through shell companies.

Several went to a trust in Victoria's name.

Others went to a private medical account.

And one recipient appeared repeatedly.

*JONATHAN VALE.*

Daniel looked up.

“Your brother received all this?””

“Yes.””

“For what?””

Thomas stared at him.

“To build a replacement life.””

Claire frowned.

“A replacement life?””

Thomas nodded.

“One that made Daniel Hart appear unmarried.””

Daniel went still.

“The records.””

“Yes.””

“The messages.””

“Yes.””

“The divorce.””

“Yes.””

“All of it?””

Thomas looked at him.

“Your father's plan was simple. Separate you from Claire. Make you believe she abandoned you.

Make Claire believe you had abandoned her. Then put someone else beside you.””

Victoria.

Daniel felt sick.

“She was part of it?””

“At first.””

“What do you mean?””

Thomas took a breath.

“Victoria believed marrying you would give her access to the family fortune.””

“And later?””

“She learned your father planned to use her too.””

Claire looked down at Lena.

“What about our daughter?””

Thomas's expression darkened.

“That was the part that changed everything.””

He pointed toward the house.

“Your father discovered Lena wasn't just your child.””

Daniel stared.

“She is my child.””

“I know.””

“No. You said she wasn't just my child.””

Thomas looked at Mercer.

“Tell him.””

Mercer said nothing.

“Tell him!””

Mercer closed his eyes.

“There was an inheritance clause.””

Daniel frowned.

“What kind?””

“Not financial.””

Claire's voice sharpened.

“Then what?””

Mercer swallowed.

“Your father had been tracking a family lineage connected to Claire.””

Claire went still.

“What lineage?””

Thomas answered.

“The Hart family isn't the oldest family named in those documents.””

Daniel stared at him.

“What are you saying?””

“Your father discovered that Claire's grandmother had inherited something decades ago.””

“Money?””

“No.””

“Property?””

“No.””

Thomas looked at Lena.

“Evidence.””

Claire’s brow furrowed.

“Evidence of what?””

Thomas shook his head.

“We don't have time.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“You don't get to say that after six years of destroying my life.””

“I didn't destroy it.””

Thomas's voice hardened.

“I was the one trying to protect it.””

“By kidnapping my daughter?””

“I was trying to keep her away from the people who just came looking for her.””

Daniel stopped.

“What people?””

Thomas looked past him.

At the driveway.

Headlights appeared through the rain.

One vehicle.

Then another.

Then a third.

Claire's face drained.

“Who are they?””

Thomas answered quietly.

“The people your father was afraid of.””

Mercer turned toward the house.

“Back inside.””

Daniel didn't move.

Thomas grabbed his arm.

“Now.””

The first SUV stopped at the gates.

Doors opened.

Men in dark coats stepped out.

Claire pulled Lena closer.

Daniel looked at Thomas.

“Police?””

“No.””

“Security?””

“No.””

“Then who?””

Thomas's eyes hardened.

“The new owners of the lie.””

One of the men raised a flashlight.

Another shouted across the rain.

“Mr. Hart!””

Daniel looked at him.

“Who are you?””

The man smiled.

“Someone who has been looking for your daughter.””

Claire immediately stepped behind Daniel.

Lena whispered, “Mommy…”

Daniel's heart pounded.

Thomas pointed toward the house.

“There's a tunnel beneath the nursery.””

Daniel looked at him.

“You knew about it?””

“I built it.””

Mercer stared.

“You built it for his father.””

“I built it to save myself.””

Daniel grabbed Claire's hand.

“Move.””

They ran inside.

Thomas slammed the front door.

The first impact came seconds later.

Boom.

Lena screamed.

Claire covered her ears.

Another impact.

The old wood shook.

Daniel looked at Thomas.

“How long?””

“Not long.””

Mercer rushed toward the hallway.

“Through the bookshelf.””

They reached the nursery.

Thomas pushed a hidden latch.

The bookshelf shifted.

A narrow staircase appeared behind it.

Claire stared.

“This was here the whole time?””

“Yes.””

Daniel looked at Thomas.

“You knew my father planned this.””

“I knew he planned for the day someone came searching.””

Another crash sounded downstairs.

The front door splintered.

Thomas pointed down the stairs.

“Go.””

Daniel hesitated.

“What about you?””

Thomas gave him a strange smile.

“You've spent six years chasing the wrong ghost.””

He looked toward the broken doorway.

“Tonight, let them chase the right one.””

Daniel took Claire and Lena down the passage.

Mercer followed.

Thomas remained at the top.

Then Daniel heard him shout.

“Daniel!””

He looked back.

Thomas held up the old cassette from the nursery.

“The second recording isn't about your father.””

Daniel stared.

“Then who is it about?””

Thomas's expression became grave.

“It’s about your mother.””

Behind him, the nursery door burst open.

Thomas vanished into the darkness.

And the passage door slammed shut.

Daniel looked at Claire.

Claire looked at Lena.

Then Mercer whispered the words that made all three of them stop.

“If that recording reveals what I think it does, Evelyn isn't the woman who betrayed your family.””

May you like

He swallowed.

“She may be the woman who saved it.””
