Chapter 6: The Daughter They Were Watching

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The ballroom that had once been filled with music and celebration now felt like the center of a storm.

I looked at my father.

Not Charles.

Not Daniel.

My father.

Because out of everyone standing there, he was the one person I had trusted without question.

And now even he had secrets.

“Dad,” I whispered.

The word barely left my mouth.

Richard Hayes looked at me with an expression I had never seen before.

Not anger.

Not confidence.

Fear.

My father was afraid.

And that scared me more than anything Charles had said.

“Tell me he’s lying.””

My father’s eyes closed for a moment.

That tiny pause broke something inside me.

Because silence from someone you love is sometimes louder than a confession.

“Dad.””

He took a breath.

“Olivia…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I don’t want a speech. I don’t want an explanation that makes everything sound better.””

My voice trembled.

“I want the truth.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Olivia.””

I turned toward him.

“Don’t.””

He stopped.

Because he knew.

He had no right to comfort me.

Not after tonight.

Not after all the secrets.

My father looked at Charles.

“You’ve done enough.””

Charles smiled.

“Have I?””

His eyes returned to me.

“Your father spent twenty years trying to keep you away from the Whitmore family.””

I stared at him.

“Why?””

Charles answered immediately.

“Because he knew what we wanted.””

My stomach tightened.

“What did they want?””

Nobody spoke.

Then Charles said:

“You.””

The room became silent.

A cold feeling moved through my body.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

Charles smiled.

“You think powerful families only fight over money?””

He stepped closer.

“Sometimes they fight over bloodlines.””

A few guests looked uncomfortable.

I almost laughed.

Because it sounded insane.

Like something from a movie.

But the documents.

The recordings.

The betrayal.

Everything tonight had already proven that reality could be worse than fiction.

My father moved in front of me.

“Enough.””

Charles looked amused.

“Still protecting her.””

“Yes.””

“Even now?””

My father’s voice hardened.

“Especially now.””

Charles shook his head.

“You never understood.””

“No,” my father replied.

“I understood perfectly.””

For the first time, the two men looked less like businessmen.

And more like enemies who had been waiting years for this moment.

Daniel looked between them.

“What are you talking about?””

Nobody answered.

He looked at his father.

“Dad.””

Charles ignored him.

He looked at me.

“Your father told you he built his company from nothing?””

I frowned.

“Yes.””

Charles nodded.

“He told you that.””

My father’s expression darkened.

“Don’t rewrite history.””

“I’m not.””

Charles looked at the guests.

“I’m telling the truth.””

He turned back to me.

“Your father and my father created a business partnership decades ago.””

I listened carefully.

“Together, they built something powerful.””

My father said nothing.

“Then one day,” Charles continued, “your father discovered something.””

“What?””

Charles smiled.

“That our family had a secret.””

Daniel frowned.

“What secret?””

Charles looked at him.

“You were too young to know.””

Then he looked back at me.

“But Olivia’s father knew.””

My hands curled.

“What secret?””

Charles didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he reached into the folder.

He pulled out an old photograph.

Then he placed it on the table.

My eyes moved toward it.

And my entire body froze.

Because I recognized the person in the picture.

My mother.

She was younger.

Much younger.

Standing beside my father.

And beside them…

Was Charles’ father.

I stared.

“No.””

My father looked away.

“Dad?””

Charles smiled.

“Your mother knew our family too.””

I picked up the photograph.

My hands shook.

“My mother never told me.””

“She couldn’t.””

I looked at Charles.

“Why?””

His expression changed.

For the first time, he looked almost serious.

“Because she died before she could.””

The room became quiet.

My mother.

The woman I barely remembered.

The woman whose perfume I could still somehow recall.

The woman whose voice existed only in old recordings.

Suddenly, her absence felt different.

Heavier.

“What does my mother have to do with this?””

My father finally spoke.

“She found out what they were planning.””

I turned.

“What planning?””

He looked at me.

And I saw the pain in his eyes.

“The Whitmores wanted control.””

Charles laughed.

“Control is such an ugly word.””

My father ignored him.

“They wanted influence over the next generation.””

My heart started beating faster.

“What next generation?””

Neither man answered.

Then Daniel whispered:

“Us.””

Everyone looked at him.

His face had gone pale.

Charles smiled.

“Exactly.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

Charles looked at his son.

“Your grandfather believed families like ours should merge.””

My stomach dropped.

“Merge?””

Charles nodded.

“Through marriage.””

The words felt unreal.

Daniel stared.

“You’re saying…”

Charles looked at me.

“I’m saying the relationship between our families was planned long before you two met.””

I looked at Daniel.

The man I married.

The man I loved.

The man whose family had destroyed me.

“No.””

Daniel stepped toward me.

“Olivia, I didn’t know.””

I believed him.

And somehow that made it worse.

Because he was telling the truth.

He was just another person trapped inside this family.

But he had still hurt me.

“You didn’t know,” I said quietly.

He stopped.

“No.””

“You didn’t know, but you still lied.””

His face fell.

I continued.

“You still chose them.””

“I know.””

His voice cracked.

“I know.””

That was the first honest thing he had said all night.

No excuses.

No defense.

Just regret.

But regret didn’t erase damage.

My father touched my shoulder.

“Olivia, I was trying to protect you.””

I looked at him.

“By hiding my entire life from me?””

His face tightened.

“I thought if you didn’t know, they couldn’t use it against you.””

“And did that work?””

He had no answer.

Because it didn’t.

They had still found me.

They had still entered my life.

They had still destroyed my trust.

Then Chloe suddenly laughed.

Everyone turned toward her.

It wasn’t a nervous laugh.

It was bitter.

“You’re all acting like Olivia is innocent.””

Daniel looked at his sister.

“Chloe.””

She wiped her eyes.

“Do you really think this is the first time she was protected?””

I stared at her.

“What are you talking about?””

Chloe looked directly at me.

“Ask your father why he erased your records.””

The room went still.

My heart stopped.

“What?””

My father’s expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

“Dad?””

Chloe smiled.

“There it is.””

Daniel looked confused.

“What records?””

I looked at my father.

“Dad.””

He didn’t answer.

And suddenly I was tired.

So tired.

Tired of discovering my own life from other people.

“Tell me.””

My father swallowed.

“Olivia…”

“No.””

My voice became firm.

“Tell me.””

He looked down.

Then he said:

“When you were eighteen, I found out the Whitmores had been tracking your life.””

My blood went cold.

“Tracking?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

My father’s voice became quieter.

“Because they believed you had something they needed.””

“What?””

He looked at me.

“You inherited something from your mother.””

I stared.

“What did I inherit?””

My father hesitated.

And that hesitation terrified me.

Then he answered:

“A company.””

The room erupted.

I blinked.

“What?””

My father continued.

“Your mother left you ownership of a private foundation she created before she died.””

Charles smiled.

“And that foundation controls something very valuable.””

Daniel looked at his father.

“What?””

Charles’ eyes stayed on me.

“The one thing your family has been trying to get for twenty years.””

My father’s expression became cold.

“Stop.””

But Charles didn’t.

He said the words anyway.

“Access.””

A chill moved through the room.

“Access to what?”” Daniel asked.

Charles smiled.

“To the original documents that prove who really owns the Whitmore empire.””

Nobody spoke.

I looked at Daniel.

Then at Charles.

Then at my father.

And suddenly everything made sense.

The wedding.

The ring.

The accusations.

They weren’t trying to embarrass me.

They weren’t trying to ruin my marriage.

They were trying to force me into a position where I had no power.

But there was one thing I still didn’t understand.

“Why now?””

Everyone looked at me.

“Why wait until my wedding?””

Charles smiled.

“Because tonight was the last chance.””

My father frowned.

“Last chance for what?””

Charles looked toward the entrance.

Then at his phone.

And his smile disappeared.

Because whatever he saw on that screen changed his expression.

For the first time tonight…

Charles Whitmore looked afraid.

Daniel noticed.

“What happened?””

Charles didn’t answer.

My father stepped forward.

“What did you see?””

Charles slowly lowered the phone.

Then he looked at me.

“The person who was supposed to deliver the documents…”

He paused.

“Has disappeared.””

A silence followed.

Then he added:

“And they took the original proof with them.””

My heart sank.

Because I knew what that meant.

Someone else was playing this game.

Someone who knew everything.

Someone who had been watching all of us.

And before anyone could say another word…

My phone rang.

The screen showed an unknown number.

I answered.

A voice spoke immediately.

A voice I had never heard before.

But the words made every person in that ballroom freeze.

“Olivia Hayes?””

I swallowed.

“Yes?””

The stranger whispered:

“Your husband isn’t the man you think he is.””

I looked at Daniel.

And he looked just as terrified as I was.

May you like

Then the voice continued:

“Because he knows exactly who destroyed your mother.””
