Chapter 4: The Enemy Inside My Home
The message stayed on the screen for three seconds.
Three seconds that felt like an entire lifetime.
*The person who ordered Chloe to frame Olivia has been identified.*
I stared at the words.
My father stared at the words.
And Daniel…
Daniel looked like he already knew the answer before anyone said it.
That was what hurt the most.
Not the accusation.
Not the betrayal.
The fear in his eyes.
Because fear meant recognition.
“Who?”” I whispered.
My father didn’t answer immediately.
He looked at Daniel.
That was enough.
The entire room followed his gaze.
Daniel stepped back.
“No.””
The word came out quietly.
Almost like a prayer.
“No, that’s impossible.””
Chloe immediately grabbed his arm.
“Daniel, don’t listen to them.””
But he pulled away.
For the first time in years, he pulled away from her.
“Why did you say that?””
Chloe froze.
“Say what?””
“That it was impossible.””
Her face changed.
Only slightly.
But I saw it.
My father saw it.
Everyone saw it.
“You knew who he was talking about,” Daniel said.
“No.””
“You did.””
His voice grew louder.
“Why did you know?””
Chloe opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Eleanor stepped forward.
“That’s enough.””
Everyone turned toward her.
Of course.
She always stepped in when Chloe was cornered.
She had spent years protecting her daughter from consequences.
But tonight was different.
Tonight, the walls were coming down.
My father looked at Eleanor.
“Mrs. Whitmore.””
The way he said her name was colder than an insult.
“You should sit down.””
Eleanor lifted her chin.
“I don’t take orders from you.””
My father nodded.
“Normally, neither do I.””
A few guests exchanged nervous looks.
He handed his assistant the phone.
“Show them.””
The assistant connected the device to the large screen.
Another video appeared.
This time, it wasn’t from the wedding.
It was from a private office.
A familiar office.
Daniel’s company.
The date appeared.
One month earlier.
My heart started beating faster.
Because I recognized the room.
Daniel’s office.
The video showed Chloe sitting across from someone.
Someone whose face was hidden.
At first.
Then the person turned slightly.
And the entire room went silent.
Daniel’s expression collapsed.
“No.””
I looked at him.
Because I already knew.
It was his father.
Charles Whitmore.
The man who had supposedly been overseas for business.
The man who hadn’t appeared at the wedding.
The man everyone believed was too sick to attend.
But there he was.
Alive.
Sitting.
Planning.
The audio began.
Charles’ voice filled the ballroom.
“Daniel is becoming weak.””
Chloe leaned forward.
“He loves her.””
Charles laughed.
“He loves what she represents.””
My hands tightened around the jacket my father had placed over my shoulders.
I felt sick.
The video continued.
Chloe said, “What if she finds out?””
Charles answered immediately.
“Then make sure she looks unstable before she speaks.””
My breath stopped.
The guests reacted with shocked whispers.
Daniel looked like someone had punched him.
“What…”
His voice cracked.
“What is this?””
Nobody answered.
The recording continued.
Chloe looked nervous.
“She’s pregnant.””
Charles leaned back.
“That makes it easier.””
The room went silent.
Even the people who had doubted me before looked uncomfortable.
Because there was no misunderstanding.
No explanation.
No excuse.
They had planned this.
They had planned me.
My pregnancy.
My reputation.
My marriage.
Everything.
Daniel looked at Chloe.
“Did you know?””
She didn’t answer.
“Did you know about this?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
A performance.
Another one.
“Daniel, I was trying to protect you.””
He stared at her.
“Protect me?””
“Yes.””
She stepped closer.
“You don’t understand. Olivia was changing everything.””
My eyebrows pulled together.
“Changing what?””
Chloe looked at me.
And for once, she didn’t pretend.
“You.””
A chill moved through the room.
She continued.
“You made him different.””
Daniel looked horrified.
“What does that mean?””
“It means before you met her, you cared about this family.””
Her voice became bitter.
“She made you question us.””
I stared at her.
That was it.
That was the reason.
Not money.
Not the ring.
Not jealousy.
They hated me because Daniel had started seeing them clearly.
Because loving me meant he couldn’t blindly obey them anymore.
Daniel shook his head.
“I can’t believe this.””
Eleanor laughed quietly.
A strange sound.
Everyone looked at her.
“You’re all acting like victims.””
My father’s eyes narrowed.
“What did you say?””
Eleanor looked around the ballroom.
“At least we protected our family.””
She pointed at me.
“She came in and took him away.””
I felt my stomach twist.
“Taken away?””
I repeated the words.
“I married your son.””
“No.””
Eleanor’s voice was sharp.
“You replaced us.””
Daniel stared at his mother.
“Mom…”
But she continued.
“You think she’s innocent?””
She laughed.
“Do you know what she did?””
My father moved slightly.
“Be careful.””
Eleanor ignored him.
“She investigated us.””
The room went quiet.
Daniel looked at me.
“Is that true?””
I didn’t look away.
“Yes.””
His face changed.
“Why?””
“Because you lied to me.””
“I was trying to handle it.””
“No.””
My voice became steady.
“You were hiding it.””
Daniel looked down.
Because he knew.
Eleanor smiled.
“See?””
She looked at the guests.
“She admits it.””
I turned toward her.
“I investigated why my husband was secretly transferring our future away from me.””
My voice echoed.
“I investigated because the man I trusted was making decisions with people who hated me.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
Every word hit.
Because it was true.
My father stepped beside me.
“Olivia discovered financial documents connecting the Whitmore family trust to illegal transfers.””
The guests gasped.
Daniel looked at him.
“Illegal?””
My father nodded.
“Your father used your name to move company assets without proper approval.””
Daniel looked back at the screen.
At his father.
At his sister.
At his mother.
The people he had spent his entire life defending.
“Why?””
The question was barely audible.
Eleanor answered.
“Because someone had to save this family.””
Daniel looked at her.
“You destroyed my marriage to save the family?””
She didn’t hesitate.
“Yes.””
That one word broke something.
Not in me.
In him.
I watched my husband finally understand that he had spent years protecting people who never protected him.
Then Daniel’s phone rang.
Everyone looked at it.
He hesitated.
Then answered.
“Hello?””
His face changed almost immediately.
“What?””
A pause.
Then:
“No. That’s impossible.””
He looked at my father.
Then at me.
“What happened?”” I asked.
Daniel slowly lowered the phone.
“The company.””
Nobody moved.
“What about the company?””
His voice was empty.
“Someone filed an emergency lawsuit.””
My father’s expression remained calm.
“Who?””
Daniel swallowed.
“The shareholders.””
A silence followed.
Then he added:
“They’re claiming I approved everything.””
My heart sank.
Daniel looked at me.
“They’re using my signature.””
My father stepped forward.
“Not just your signature.””
Daniel stared.
“What do you mean?””
My father looked toward the screen.
At the video.
At the evidence.
Then he said:
“The person behind this didn’t just want to destroy Olivia.””
He paused.
“They wanted to destroy you too.””
Daniel looked confused.
“Who would do that?””
My father’s eyes moved toward the ballroom entrance.
Toward the man everyone thought was absent.
Toward the face frozen on the screen.
“Your father.””
Nobody spoke.
Then the ballroom doors opened.
Slowly.
Everyone turned.
A man stood there.
Older.
Cold.
Completely calm.
Charles Whitmore.
Daniel’s father.
The man who had been planning everything from the shadows.
He looked at the room full of witnesses.
At the evidence.
At his son.
Then he smiled.
“Looks like my family reunion started without me.””
And Daniel whispered the words nobody wanted to hear.
“Dad…”
Charles walked inside.
“I think it’s time we tell Olivia the truth.””
He looked directly at me.
“The truth about why she was never supposed to marry my son.””
My blood went cold.
Because suddenly, I realized something.
The ring.
The wedding.
The documents.
They were only the beginning.
May you like
The real secret had nothing to do with money.
It had everything to do with me.
