Chapter 5: The Secret My Husband Never Told Me
Charles Whitmore walked into the ballroom like he was entering his own house.
Maybe that was because, in his mind, everything belonged to him.
The company.
The family.
The people around him.
Even the choices his son made.
He didn’t look embarrassed.
He didn’t look afraid.
He looked annoyed.
Like we had interrupted his plan.
Daniel stood frozen.
“Dad…”
Charles glanced at him.
“Daniel.””
The disappointment in his voice was carefully controlled.
Not anger.
Not surprise.
Disappointment.
The same kind of disappointment a person showed when a machine stopped working.
That was when I understood something.
Daniel wasn’t his son.
Not in the way a child should be loved.
He was an investment.
A tool.
A continuation of the Whitmore name.
Charles looked at me.
“So you finally found out.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“Found out what?””
He smiled.
“That you were never part of the plan.””
The ballroom went silent.
Daniel immediately stepped forward.
“Stop.””
Charles looked at him.
“You’re defending her?””
“Yes.””
The answer came instantly.
For once, Daniel didn’t hesitate.
Charles’ expression changed.
Only slightly.
But I saw it.
He was surprised.
“After everything?””
Daniel’s voice was low.
“She’s my wife.””
Charles laughed.
“No. She’s the reason you’re standing against your own family.””
Daniel looked at me.
Then back at his father.
“No.””
He shook his head.
“She’s the reason I finally see my family clearly.””
A wave of whispers moved through the guests.
I watched Charles carefully.
Because powerful people always revealed themselves when they lost control.
And Charles Whitmore was losing control.
“You have no idea what you’re saying.””
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“I know exactly what I’m saying.””
Charles walked closer.
“You think this woman loves you?””
I felt my father move beside me.
But I lifted my hand slightly.
Not yet.
I wanted to hear him.
Because after tonight, I deserved the truth.
Charles continued.
“She didn’t marry you because of who you are.””
Daniel’s face hardened.
“Don’t.””
“She married you because she knew exactly what you had.””
The words hung in the air.
I frowned.
“What are you talking about?””
Charles looked at me.
“You really don’t know?””
My stomach tightened.
“Know what?””
He smiled.
A cold, satisfied smile.
“Interesting.””
Daniel looked confused.
“Dad, stop playing games.””
Charles ignored him.
“Olivia, did Daniel ever tell you about the agreement?””
I looked at Daniel.
His face changed.
And that was enough.
“No.””
Charles nodded.
“Of course he didn’t.””
Daniel’s voice became sharp.
“Don’t do this.””
“Why not?””
Charles looked at the guests.
“Everyone deserves to know why this marriage happened.””
My heart started pounding.
I hated that.
I hated that after everything, a part of me still hoped Charles was lying.
Because if he was telling the truth…
If Daniel had hidden another secret…
I didn’t know how much more I could take.
Charles reached into his jacket.
He pulled out a folder.
My father’s assistant immediately stepped forward.
But Charles held it up.
“Relax.””
He smiled.
“This one is real.””
He placed the folder on a nearby table.
“Open it.””
Nobody moved.
Daniel stared at the folder.
“What is it?””
Charles looked at his son.
“The agreement your mother and I made before you met Olivia.””
Daniel’s face went pale.
“My mother?””
“Yes.””
I looked at Eleanor.
She looked away.
That was the second time that night I saw fear on her face.
My father noticed too.
“Open the folder.””
Daniel slowly walked forward.
His hands shook as he opened it.
He read the first page.
Then the second.
Then stopped.
“What…”
His voice disappeared.
I stepped closer.
“Daniel?””
He looked at me.
And the pain in his eyes told me everything.
“I didn’t know.””
The words were almost a whisper.
Charles laughed.
“Of course you didn’t.””
Daniel turned.
“You lied to me too?””
Charles shrugged.
“You were young.””
“I was thirty.””
“You were still naive.””
The insult landed harder because Charles didn’t even realize it was cruel.
Daniel looked back at the document.
“What is this?””
Charles answered.
“A condition.””
My father’s expression darkened.
“A condition for what?””
Charles smiled.
“For Daniel’s inheritance.””
The room went quiet.
I felt cold.
Charles continued.
“When Daniel turned thirty-five, he would receive full control of the family assets.””
Daniel looked at him.
“But?””
Charles looked at me.
“But only if he married someone who could strengthen the family.””
My blood ran cold.
I stared at Daniel.
“No.””
Daniel shook his head.
“Olivia, I swear—”
Charles continued.
“She wasn’t supposed to be you.””
That sentence hurt more than I expected.
Not because I believed him.
Because Daniel looked guilty.
Not because he chose me.
Because he had known something.
Something.
“Daniel.””
My voice was quiet.
“Did you know about this?””
He looked at me.
A long silence.
Then:
“I knew there were expectations.””
My heart sank.
“But not this.””
I looked away.
The pain was worse because he wasn’t completely innocent.
Not anymore.
Charles smiled.
“You see?””
He pointed at Daniel.
“He’s always been weak.””
Daniel’s face hardened.
“No.””
Charles raised an eyebrow.
“You still think you’re different?””
Daniel looked at him.
“Yes.””
The answer surprised everyone.
Even me.
“I was weak.””
Daniel took a breath.
“I let you and Mom control my life.””
He looked at Chloe.
“I let Chloe hurt my wife because I was too afraid to admit what my family was.””
Then he looked at me.
“But I’m done.””
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Charles laughed.
A quiet, cruel laugh.
“You think this changes anything?””
Daniel frowned.
“What?””
Charles stepped closer.
“You still don’t know the biggest secret.””
My stomach dropped.
No.
Not again.
Not another secret.
Charles looked at me.
“Olivia, did you ever wonder why your father hated this family from the beginning?””
I looked at my father.
He became completely still.
That scared me.
Because my father was never still.
Not like that.
“Dad?””
He didn’t answer.
Charles smiled.
“There it is.””
Daniel looked between us.
“What is he talking about?””
Charles picked up another document.
“This marriage was not the first time our families crossed paths.””
My fingers went cold.
“What does that mean?””
Charles looked directly at me.
“Your father and I have known each other for twenty years.””
The room blurred for a second.
I looked at my father.
“Is that true?””
He didn’t deny it.
That hurt.
“Dad?””
His expression softened.
“Olivia…”
“No.””
I stepped back.
“Don’t.””
All night, everyone had been hiding things.
Everyone had known pieces of my life that I didn’t.
And suddenly, I felt like the only person in the room who didn’t know her own story.
Charles continued.
“Your father didn’t want you near Daniel.””
My father finally spoke.
“Because I knew what your family was.””
Charles smiled.
“And because he knew what happened before.””
My father’s eyes turned cold.
“Enough.””
“No.””
Charles looked at me.
“She deserves to know.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“What happened?””
Nobody answered.
Charles opened the document.
Then he said the words that changed everything.
“Twenty years ago, your father and my father were business partners.””
I stared.
“Your father built half of this empire.””
He paused.
“Until someone betrayed him.””
My father’s jaw tightened.
Charles looked at him.
“Tell her.””
My father didn’t move.
So Charles did.
“The person who destroyed Richard Hayes’ company…”
He looked at me.
“Was Daniel’s grandfather.””
The room went silent.
I couldn’t breathe.
Because suddenly, this wasn’t just about a wedding.
It wasn’t about Chloe.
It wasn’t even about Daniel.
It was about a betrayal that started before I was born.
I looked at my father.
“Is that why you never wanted me to marry him?””
His eyes filled with regret.
“Yes.””
One word.
One devastating word.
Daniel looked at me.
“Olivia…”
I stepped back.
Because I didn’t know what to believe anymore.
Then Charles smiled.
“The truth is, Olivia…”
He picked up the final document.
“You were never an accident.””
My blood ran cold.
“What?””
He placed the paper on the table.
“You were the reason Daniel was chosen.””
I stared at him.
“What are you saying?””
Charles looked at Daniel.
Then back at me.
“The Whitmore family didn’t discover you after you met my son.””
He paused.
“We found you years before.””
The room went completely silent.
And then my father whispered the words I had never heard before.
“Olivia…”
May you like
His voice broke.
“They knew about you before I did.””
