Chapter 9: The Room Beneath The House
I drove back faster than I should have.
Not because I wanted answers.
Because I was afraid of what the answers would be.
Officer Bennett was waiting outside my mother’s house.
Two patrol cars sat in the driveway.
That sight alone told me this was bigger than I imagined.
“What happened?””
He looked at me.
“We found a hidden room.””
My stomach dropped.
“What?””
“Behind the wall in Evelyn’s office.””
I stared at the house.
A hidden room.
Of course.
A woman who hid the truth about my birth had hidden more than paperwork.
“Show me.””
Officer Bennett stopped me.
“Before you see it, understand something.””
“What?””
“What’s inside is evidence.””
I nodded.
He opened the door.
The office looked exactly as it had before.
Except now I noticed everything.
The bookshelf.
The desk.
The framed photos.
The perfect image.
Officer Bennett walked to the bookshelf.
He removed several books.
Then pressed against the wall.
A section moved.
Behind it was a narrow doorway.
I felt sick.
“How long has that been there?””
“We don’t know.””
He turned on a flashlight.
“Your mother built it years ago.””
I stepped inside.
The room smelled like dust.
Old paper.
And something else.
Fear.
The walls were covered.
Not with pictures.
With information.
Dates.
Names.
Notes.
My name appeared everywhere.
*Caleb’s first date.*
*Caleb’s college decision.*
*Caleb’s relationship problems.*
*Caleb’s wife.*
My breathing stopped.
“She tracked me.””
Officer Bennett nodded.
“She monitored you.””
I walked closer.
There were folders.
Hundreds of pages.
One folder had Maya’s name.
I opened it.
Photos.
Messages.
Private information.
My stomach turned.
“How did she get this?””
“We’re investigating.””
Then I saw another folder.
My name.
But the label was different.
*Original Plan.*
I opened it.
Inside was a document dated years earlier.
Before I met Maya.
Before I got married.
The first line made my blood run cold.
*Future spouse evaluation.*
I flipped through.
My mother had been planning my relationships.
For years.
Then I found the newest page.
The one dated three weeks before the shed incident.
It was titled:
*Final Separation Strategy.*
I read the first sentence.
*If Maya refuses to leave voluntarily, Caleb must believe she is unsafe for the child.*
I couldn’t breathe.
Officer Bennett watched my face.
“What does it say?””
I handed him the paper.
He read silently.
Then his expression hardened.
“Mr. Carter…”
I looked at him.
“What?””
He pointed to the bottom of the page.
There was a signature.
Not my mother’s.
Someone else’s.
A name I recognized.
Someone who had been helping her.
Someone who had access to our marriage.
My stomach dropped.
Because beneath the signature was one sentence.
*Phase two begins after Caleb discovers the truth.*
My phone rang.
Maya.
I answered.
“Hey.””
Her voice was shaking.
“Caleb?””
“What happened?””
“I woke up from a nap.””
“Are you okay?””
“Someone was inside the hospital room.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
“They left something on my table.””
I stood frozen.
“What did they leave?””
A pause.
Then Maya whispered:
“A photo of us.””
My hand tightened around the phone.
“Who?””
“I don’t know.””
“Is there anything else?””
Silence.
Then:
“Yes.””
“What?””
Her voice cracked.
“On the back of the photo, they wrote…”
I waited.
May you like
And then she read the words.
“*You should have left when you had the chance.*”
