Chapter 10: The Person Behind The Plan
The hospital hallway had never felt so long.
I ran.
I didn’t walk.
I didn’t care who looked at me.
I didn’t care that Officer Bennett called my name behind me.
All I could think about was Maya alone in that room.
The photo.
The message.
The fact that someone had walked into a hospital while my pregnant wife was recovering from being locked away.
Someone who knew exactly where she was.
Someone who wanted her afraid.
When I reached her room, the door was open.
Maya was sitting upright in bed.
Her face was pale.
But she wasn’t crying.
That scared me more.
Maya only became quiet when she was trying to stay strong.
I crossed the room immediately.
“Are you okay?””
She nodded.
“I’m okay.””
I looked around.
“Where’s the nurse?””
“She left ten minutes ago.””
“Did anyone see who came in?””
“No.””
My hands shook.
“Maya, you should have called security.””
“I know.””
“Why didn’t you call me first?””
Her eyes met mine.
“Because I knew you were already carrying too much.””
That hurt.
Because even now, she was protecting me.
I sat beside her.
“What did they look like?””
“I don’t know.””
“Anything?””
She thought.
“Tall.””
“Man or woman?””
“I couldn’t tell.””
I frowned.
“What do you mean?””
“They were wearing a hood.””
My stomach tightened.
“They didn’t say anything?””
“No.””
Maya looked at the photograph on the table.
“They just placed it there.””
I picked it up.
It was a picture of us at our wedding.
Smiling.
Happy.
Before everything changed.
I turned it over.
The handwriting was familiar.
Not my mother’s.
But familiar.
Then I saw the initials.
My blood ran cold.
“Caleb?””
I stared at the back of the photo.
“What?””
I couldn’t answer.
Because I knew those initials.
They belonged to someone I trusted.
Someone I had defended.
Someone who had been standing beside my family for years.
Maya noticed my face.
“Who is it?””
I looked at her.
“I don’t know.””
It was a lie.
She knew immediately.
“Caleb.””
I closed my eyes.
“The initials are from Daniel.””
Her expression changed.
“Your mother’s attorney?””
I nodded.
Daniel Price had been handling my mother’s legal matters for years.
He helped her with property.
Taxes.
Documents.
Every complicated thing she claimed she couldn’t handle alone.
He had also been at our wedding.
He had hugged Maya.
He had congratulated us.
And now his initials were on a threat.
Officer Bennett entered moments later.
I handed him the photo.
He studied it.
“Where did you get this name?””
“Daniel Price.””
His expression shifted.
“You know him?””
“My mother’s lawyer.””
Officer Bennett looked at the photograph again.
“We need to speak with him.””
“Now.””
He nodded.
“Already sent someone.””
I looked at Maya.
“Are you sure you’re okay?””
She gave me a tired smile.
“No.””
The honesty surprised me.
“I’m scared.””
I reached for her hand.
“I’m sorry.””
“Caleb.””
“I should have seen it.””
“No.””
“I defended them.””
“You didn’t know.””
“I should have listened.””
Maya squeezed my fingers.
“You’re listening now.””
That sentence stayed with me.
Because she was right.
For years, I had mistaken loyalty for love.
I thought loving my mother meant protecting her.
I never considered that sometimes love meant stopping someone.
Two hours later, Officer Bennett returned.
Alone.
That was the first sign something was wrong.
“Where’s Daniel?””
He didn’t answer immediately.
“Mr. Price wasn’t at his office.””
“Where is he?””
“We don’t know.””
My stomach dropped.
“Did he run?””
“We’re investigating.””
Then he placed a file on the table.
“We found this in your mother’s hidden room.””
I opened it.
Inside was a payment record.
Transfers.
Large amounts.
Sent from my mother.
To Daniel.
For years.
“What is this?””
“Money.””
“I can see that.””
Officer Bennett looked at me.
“Your mother was paying him.””
“For what?””
He pointed to the documents.
“Consulting.””
“That’s vague.””
“It is.””
I flipped through the pages.
Then I found the dates.
The payments increased after Maya became pregnant.
I looked up.
“She planned this after we found out about the baby.””
“Yes.””
The room went silent.
Then Maya whispered:
“She wasn’t afraid of losing Caleb.””
We looked at her.
“She was afraid of losing control over the baby.””
Nobody spoke.
Because that was the truth.
The baby had never been the reason.
The baby was the prize.
A knock interrupted us.
A nurse stood outside.
“Mr. Carter?””
“Yes?””
“There’s someone downstairs asking for you.””
My body tensed.
“Who?””
The nurse looked at her clipboard.
“Evelyn Carter.””
My mother.
Maya grabbed my hand.
“Don’t go alone.””
I looked at her.
“I won’t.””
I walked downstairs with Officer Bennett.
Evelyn was sitting in the waiting area.
No anger.
No panic.
Just sadness.
The same expression she used when she wanted people to forgive her.
“Caleb.””
I stopped.
“What are you doing here?””
“I need to talk to you.””
“You don’t get to decide that anymore.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I know I made mistakes.””
I almost laughed.
“Mistakes?””
She looked down.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
“Because it’s true.””
“No.””
My voice was calm.
And that seemed to frighten her more than anger.
“You were trying to control me.””
She shook her head.
“I was trying to keep my family together.””
“You destroyed it.””
A tear fell.
“I never wanted to hurt Maya.””
“But you did.””
She looked past me.
Toward the hallway leading to Maya’s room.
Then she whispered:
“There’s something you don’t know.””
I stayed silent.
“Daniel betrayed me.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“He changed the plan.””
“What plan?””
Her face changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
“He wasn’t supposed to threaten Maya.””
I stared.
“You’re admitting there was a plan?””
She froze.
For the first time, she realized what she had said.
Officer Bennett stepped closer.
“Mrs. Carter.””
My mother looked at him.
Then back at me.
“I need you to understand something.””
“What?””
“Everything I did was to keep you.””
My stomach turned.
“That’s not love.””
Her face broke.
Then she whispered:
“Daniel knows the truth about your father.””
I stared.
“What truth?””
She looked terrified.
“The reason he came back.””
A pause.
Then:
“He didn’t come back for you.””
My heart pounded.
“Why did he come back?””
My mother looked at me.
May you like
And said:
“Because he knows what really happened the night you were born.””
