Chapter 13: The Baby Who Was Never Hers

I didn’t answer.

Not because I didn’t want to.

Because my brain couldn’t process the words.

*The baby your mother took wasn’t supposed to be you.*

The basement suddenly felt smaller.

The walls felt closer.

The air felt heavier.

“Sarah,” I finally said.

My voice barely sounded like mine.

“What do you mean?””

The woman on the phone was silent.

Like she knew there was no easy way to say what came next.

“Caleb, where are you?””

“At my mother’s house.””

A sharp breath.

“You need to leave.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“Why?””

“Because Evelyn knows I contacted you.””

My eyes moved toward the basement stairs.

Nobody was there.

But after everything I had learned, I knew better than to assume I was safe.

“How does she know?””

“Because she has always known.””

A chill moved through me.

“Sarah, tell me what happened.””

The woman exhaled.

“I was working at the hospital the night you were born.””

My heart stopped.

“You were there?””

“Yes.””

“Then tell me the truth.””

“I will.””

She paused.

“But you need to understand something first.””

“What?””

“Your mother did not steal you because she wanted a child.””

I frowned.

“Then why?””

“Because she wanted Jonathan.””

The room went silent.

Maya looked at me.

I put the phone on speaker.

Sarah continued.

“Jonathan was leaving her.””

I closed my eyes.

“Why?””

“Because he discovered something about her.””

“What?””

“She had been lying about her pregnancy.””

My chest tightened.

“What does that mean?””

Sarah’s voice shook.

“Evelyn was pregnant.””

I waited.

“Then she lost the baby.””

The words landed softly.

But they carried weight.

“And?””

“She never accepted it.””

Maya covered her mouth.

I stared at the floor.

“What are you saying?””

“I’m saying Evelyn gave birth to a child who did not survive.””

My heart pounded.

“Then what does that have to do with me?””

Sarah went quiet.

Then:

“You were born two days later.””

I couldn’t move.

“No.””

“Caleb…”

“No.””

My voice rose.

“You’re telling me my mother took me because she lost another child?””

“I’m telling you she was grieving and unstable.””

“That doesn’t answer my question.””

Sarah sighed.

“Your mother was supposed to leave the hospital without you.””

My breathing stopped.

“What?””

“She was in the maternity ward that night.””

“Why?””

“To see Jonathan.””

My hands shook.

“She saw him holding you.””

A horrible silence followed.

“She saw him happy.””

I felt sick.

“And?””

“And she convinced herself that if she had a child, Jonathan would stay.””

Maya grabbed my hand.

“She took you because she thought you could replace what she lost.””

The words hurt.

Because suddenly, everything made sense.

The obsession.

The control.

The fear.

She wasn’t protecting me.

She was trying to prove I belonged to her.

“Was Jonathan there?””

“Yes.””

“What did he do?””

“He tried to stop her.””

“And?””

Sarah’s voice cracked.

“She told him if he exposed her, she would make sure he never saw you again.””

I looked away.

The same threat.

The same weapon.

Everyone around Evelyn lived afraid.

“Why didn’t you tell anyone?””

Sarah was quiet.

“I tried.””

“What happened?””

“Evelyn threatened me.””

“With what?””

“She said she knew where my children went to school.””

The room went cold.

“She threatened everyone.””

Maya whispered:

“She always does.””

I looked at her.

She looked exhausted.

But strong.

“She used fear,” Maya said.

Sarah heard her.

“She did.””

I swallowed.

“Where is the proof?””

“I have it.””

My heart jumped.

“Where?””

“Safe.””

“Sarah.””

“I was afraid.””

“I understand.””

“No.””

Her voice became emotional.

“You don’t.””

A pause.

“I watched that woman take a child who wasn’t hers and build a life around a lie.””

My eyes filled.

“I’m sorry.””

“So am I.””

“Can you give me the evidence?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Tomorrow.””

“Where?””

She gave me an address.

Then she said:

“Caleb?””

“Yes?””

“There is one more thing.””

I waited.

“Your father didn’t abandon you.””

I closed my eyes.

“I know.””

“No.””

Her voice changed.

“You don’t.””

“What do you mean?””

“Jonathan came back.””

I froze.

“When?””

“Many times.””

“Then why didn’t I know?””

“Because Evelyn made sure you didn’t.””

“How?””

Sarah hesitated.

“She convinced people he was dangerous.””

I looked at the old house.

At the walls that held decades of lies.

Then Sarah said:

“She didn’t just erase him from your life.””

A pause.

“She erased everyone who knew the truth.””

The call ended.

Nobody spoke.

Finally, Maya whispered:

“Caleb.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“You need to hear something.””

“What?””

She looked terrified.

“I found Sarah before.””

I froze.

“What?””

Maya looked down.

“Before the wedding.””

My stomach dropped.

“You knew about her?””

“No.””

“Then what?””

“She contacted me.””

I stared.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because she told me something that scared me.””

“What?””

Maya reached into her bag.

She pulled out a folded piece of paper.

I opened it.

One sentence.

Written by Sarah.

*If Evelyn knows you are pregnant, she will do anything to keep the baby.*

My hands went numb.

Maya whispered:

“She warned me.””

I looked at the paper.

Then at my wife.

“How long have you known?””

“Since before we got married.””

The betrayal hurt.

But not because she hid it.

Because she had been carrying fear alone.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because every time I tried to tell you something about your mother, you chose her.””

I had no answer.

Because it was true.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

From Evelyn.

Only three words.

*Come home, Caleb.*

May you like

A second message appeared.

*It’s time you know what really happened.*
