Chapter 6 - THE LAWYER

We found a lawyer by midday.
Sarah knew someone. An old friend from college. Elena. She specialized in family law. Specifically, custody cases involving manipulation and coercion.
Elena sat across from us at her desk, reading through the materials I had brought—the custody petition, the notes, the letter from Diane to Ryan. She read slowly. Carefully. Her expression unreadable.
When she finished, she placed the papers neatly on her desk and looked at me.
"This is... unusual," she said.
"Unusual?" Sarah leaned forward. "It's terrifying."
"It is," Elena agreed. She tapped the letter. "This letter. Dated two years ago. Before your marriage. Before conception. This is extremely powerful evidence. It suggests that this was premeditated. That you were selected specifically to bear a child who would then be taken away."
"But can we prove it?" I asked.
Elena nodded.
"We can. Especially with Ryan's signature on the pre-birth agreement. And especially since he never told you about it. That suggests coercion. Fraud. Conspiracy."
"But Ryan is still on her side," I said. "Or at least... he hasn't chosen mine."
"Which makes him unreliable," Elena said frankly. "He can be turned against you. His mother can manipulate his testimony. She can threaten him. She can lie. We cannot count on him."
"Then what do we do?"
"We fight," Elena said simply. "We file first. Before she does. We file an emergency petition for full custody. We submit all of this as evidence. We show the judge that she has been planning this for years. That she targeted you. That she groomed her own son to participate in a scheme to take your child."
"And if she already filed?"
Elena paused.
"If she filed this morning... we will know very soon. But even if she did, this evidence changes everything. No judge will look at this letter and decide she is acting in good faith. This is not concern. This is conspiracy."
Elena leaned forward across the desk.
"Emily, listen to me. Diane Vance is dangerous. More dangerous than most people. She is organized. She is patient. She has planned every single step. She has anticipated every move. And she has prepared for you to run. She has prepared for you to fight. She has prepared for Ryan to hesitate."
"Then how do we win?"
"We find what she didn't prepare for." Elena tapped the letter again. "This. Her own words. Her own handwriting. Her own admission that this was never about Noah's well-being. It was about control. Pure and simple."
Elena opened a file and began writing.
"I will file immediately. We will get a temporary custody order. We will freeze any action she has taken. But we need more. We need to know exactly what she told Ryan. Exactly what agreements they have. Exactly who else knows about this plan."
"Ryan knows," I said. "And he's scared."
"Then we need him to talk to us. On record. Under oath." Elena looked at me sharply. "Can you get him to meet with you? Alone? Without her knowing?"
I thought about Ryan standing on the porch. Holding his phone. Watching me leave.
"He wants to tell the truth," I said. "I think he has wanted to for a long time. But she holds power over him. Fear. Guilt. Obligation. He can't break free on his own."
"Then help him," Elena said. "Meet him. Talk to him. But be careful. If Diane finds out... she will move faster. And she will be far more ruthless."
I stood up to leave. Elena walked us to the door.
"One more thing," she said quietly. "If this letter is genuine—and I believe it is—then Diane may have done other things. Things even Ryan doesn't know about. Background checks. Medical records. Contacts. Arrangements. She may have more evidence. More witnesses. More plans."
"Like what?"
"Like... what if she never intended for you to leave that house with Noah alive?" Elena said. "What if the plan was always that you would be deemed unfit. Mentally unstable. Dangerous. And then... what if something happened to you?"
My blood ran cold.
"She wouldn't..."
"She prepared this before you were pregnant, Emily. She treated you like a vessel. Once you had served your purpose... what use did she have for you?" Elena placed a hand gently on my shoulder. "Be very careful. And do not trust anyone. Not even your own shadow. Until Diane Vance is stopped, you are in danger."
I walked out of Elena's office and into bright afternoon sunlight. But I felt no warmth. Only cold.
Sarah drove us back to her house. We walked inside in silence. Noah was asleep in his car seat. Sarah carried him gently into the house.
I sat at the kitchen table and stared at my phone.
Ryan had not messaged. Had not called. Had not answered the texts I had sent hours ago.
I picked up the phone. I typed one message.
*"Meet me. Tonight. Somewhere she will never find us. I need you to tell me the truth. All of it."*
I sent it.
Then I waited.
Minutes passed.
Then a reply appeared. Not from Ryan.
From an unknown number.
*"Stay away from my son. Stay away from my family. Or you will lose far more than a custody battle."*
I stared at the screen.
May you like
Another message appeared immediately after.
*"I know who you are with. I know where you are. And I am coming for what belongs to me."*
