Chapter 16 - THE RETURN

He arrived three days later.
I watched his car pull up the long driveway. He stepped out. He looked different. Softer. Less burdened. He wore simple clothes. No expensive watch. No polished shoes. Just a man.
He walked slowly toward the porch. He stopped at the steps. He did not come closer. He waited.
Noah came running out. He stopped beside me. He looked at Ryan.
“Daddy?”
Ryan’s face crumpled. He knelt down. “Hello, Noah.”
Noah looked up at me. I nodded.
Noah ran forward. Ryan caught him. He held him tight. He buried his face in Noah’s shoulder. And for the first time… I saw Ryan cry.
I walked down the steps. I stood beside them.
Ryan looked up at me. His eyes were red. “Thank you.”
“Don’t thank me yet,” I said. “There is still much to fix. And much to explain.”
“I will tell him everything,” Ryan said. “When he is old enough. I will tell him about Clara. About Diane. About all of it. He will know the truth. Every single part.”
“He will be proud of his grandmother,” I said. “And he will understand that people make mistakes. Even terrible ones.”
Ryan stood up. He kept one hand resting gently on Noah’s head.
“I will spend the rest of my life making this right,” he said. “For you. For Noah. For Clara.”
We stood there together in the sunlight. A family. Broken. Scarred. But finally whole.

I looked at the locket around Noah’s neck. I thought of Clara. Watching. Waiting. Hoping we would find our way back to each other.
She would have been happy.
