Chapter 18 - THE LETTER FROM NOWHERE

On Noah’s sixteenth birthday, a letter arrived.

No return address. Postmarked from a small coastal town thousands of miles away. Handwriting familiar. Sharp. Elegant.

Diane.

I opened it alone. I read it sitting at the kitchen table while Noah and Ryan laughed in the yard.

*Dear Emily,*

*I do not expect you to forgive me. I do not expect a reply. I only want you to know that I am well. That I have found peace. And that I think of you often.*

*I watched from a distance these past years. I watched you build a home. I watched Ryan become a man. I watched Noah grow. Clara would have been so proud. And for the first time… I am too.*

*Teach him well. Teach him that power without love destroys everything. Teach him that money is nothing compared to family. Teach him what Clara knew all along—that truth is the only legacy that truly lasts.*

*I will not write again. This is my final goodbye. Be happy. Be safe. And tell Noah… tell him that even the most broken heart can learn to love again.*

*— Diane*

I folded the letter. I placed it beside Clara’s journal. Beside the birth certificate. Beside Ryan’s first letter.

All the stories. All the voices. All the truths.

Ryan walked in. He saw the letter in my hand. He read the signature.

“She is alive,” he said quietly.

“She is at peace.”

“Will you answer her?”

I looked out the window. Noah was climbing the treehouse Ryan had built him. He waved down at us.

“No,” I said. “Some goodbyes are final. And some stories… are better left closed.”
