Chapter 14 - THE MEETING

I stepped out onto the porch. Mark reached for my arm.
“Emily, don’t. She could be armed.”
“She came to talk,” I said. “If she wanted to hurt us… she would have sent others.”
I walked down the steps. Noah was asleep in the cabin, safe behind locked doors, with Mark’s wife watching him. I had left him there. Because I knew if I brought him… Diane would use him against me.
Diane stood in the driveway. The silver locket glinted in the moonlight.
“You came,” she said. Her voice was softer than I had ever heard it.
“You knew I would,” I said. “Because you know I want answers. Just like Clara did.”
Diane looked toward the cabin. Her expression softened. Just for a moment. She looked like a woman who had lost everything.
“He is asleep inside?”
“Safe. And you will not touch him.”
She looked back at me. “I am not here to take him, Emily. Not tonight. I came to give you something.”
She held out the locket.
I hesitated. Then I stepped forward and took it. It was warm from her hand.
“Clara wore this every day,” Diane said. “I took it from her… before they found the car. I have kept it all these years. I could not bear to look at it. And I could not bring myself to destroy it.”
“Why give it to me now?”
“Because you are right,” she said. Tears glistened in her eyes. “Everything Clara wrote. Everything she said. It was all true. I loved him. Ryan Hale. I loved him from the moment we were children. And he chose her. He chose Clara. And I could not bear it.”
Her voice broke.
“I did not mean to hurt her. I only meant to separate them. To send him away. To give her time to forget. But she found out. She threatened to tell everyone. To ruin everything. We fought. We screamed. She got in her car and drove away in the storm. I ran after her. I tried to stop her. But she was too fast. And she drove off the cliff.”
Diane covered her face with her hands.
“I did not cut her brakes. I did not push her. But I drove her away. With my words. With my jealousy. With my hate. I killed her just as surely as if I had held the wheel.”
Silence stretched between us. Heavy and terrible.
“And then you took her child,” I said.
“I took him because he was all I had left of him!” Diane cried. “Ryan Hale died shortly after Clara. Heartbreak, they said. He never knew she was pregnant. He never knew about Ryan. And I was left with nothing but their child. So I raised him as mine. I gave him my name. My fortune. My life. I tried to love him enough for all of us. But I could never forget… he was never truly mine.”
She looked at me.
“And then you appeared. So like her. Same eyes. Same spirit. And I was terrified. Terrified you would find out. Terrified you would take him away. Terrified history would repeat itself. So I tried to take Noah first. To protect him. To protect myself. But I was wrong. Just as I was wrong about everything.”
Diane reached into her coat and pulled out a thick stack of papers. She held them out to me.
“Confessions. Signed. Witnessed. Everything. Admitting the fraud. The forgery. The lies. Everything. I have also transferred all remaining assets into a trust. In Noah’s name. And yours. I have nothing left.”
I stared at the papers. “Why?”
“Because Ryan found me,” she said quietly. “He told me everything. About the letter. About the warning. About how he had stripped me of everything to protect you. And then he told me… if I harmed a single hair on your head or Noah’s… he would destroy me himself. He chose you, Emily. Over me. Over everything. Just like his father chose Clara.”
Diane looked toward the mountains.
“I have lost everyone. Everything. There is nothing left for me here. I am leaving. And I will never return. You will never hear from me again. Noah will never know my name. But you must promise me one thing.”
“Depends what it is.”
“Tell him about Clara. Tell him she loved him. Tell him she would have given him the world. And tell him… that not all monsters are born. Some are made by grief.”
She stepped back.
“I am sorry, Emily. For Clara. For Ryan. For you. And for Noah. I am sorry for everything.”
Diane turned and walked to her car. She opened the door. She paused one last time.
May you like
“Ryan asked me to tell you something. He said… he will wait. As long as it takes. Whenever you are ready. He will be there.”
She got in her car. She drove away. And this time… she did not look back.
