Chapter 7: The Truth Daniel Buried for Nine Years
I read the sentence three times.
*Ethan Miller cannot be allowed to tell Emma the truth about the baby.*
The words refused to make sense.
Not because they were complicated.
Because they were impossible.
I looked at Ethan.
Then back at the email.
Then at him again.
“Daniel wrote this?””
Ethan nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
“When?””
“Before Lily was born.””
My fingers tightened around the paper.
“That’s impossible.””
“I know.””
“No, you don’t understand.””
My voice shook.
“I was married to Daniel.””
Ethan looked down.
“I know.””
“We had a life.””
“I know.””
“He was there when Lily was born.””
“I know.””
“Then explain how you can sit here and tell me he stole my entire life.””
Ethan didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, he reached into the folder and pulled out another document.
“I’m not asking you to believe me because of my words.””
He placed it in front of me.
“I’m asking you to look at the evidence.””
I stared at the page.
A medical document.
My name.
A date.
The hospital where Lily was born.
My eyes moved lower.
Then stopped.
There was a section labeled:
*Biological Father Information.*
The name beside it was not Daniel Carter.
It was:
*Ethan James Miller.*
The room tilted.
I pushed the paper away.
“No.””
Ethan didn’t move.
“Emma.””
“No.””
I stood.
“I need to go.””
“You deserve to know.””
“I said I need to go.””
People in the café turned to look.
I didn’t care.
I grabbed my bag.
My hands were shaking so badly I almost dropped my phone.
“Emma.””
I stopped.
Not because I wanted to.
Because hearing my name from him sounded strangely familiar.
Like a memory I couldn’t reach.
“You don’t remember everything,” Ethan said quietly.
I turned around.
“What does that mean?””
His eyes were full of sadness.
“It means Daniel took advantage of you when you were vulnerable.””
I froze.
“What happened?””
Ethan looked at the folder.
“Your memory of that time is incomplete.””
“Why?””
“Because after Lily was born, you had complications.””
I knew that.
Everyone knew that.
The doctor said stress and exhaustion could affect memory.
But I had never thought about it beyond that.
“You were exhausted,” Ethan continued.
“You were medicated. You were recovering.””
My heartbeat increased.
“And Daniel?””
“He was there.””
“Yes.””
“He made sure he was the only person telling you what happened.””
I felt sick.
“No.””
Ethan looked at me.
“I loved you, Emma.””
The words made me angry.
Because I didn’t know if they were true.
“I don’t know you.””
His expression broke slightly.
“I know.””
“I don’t remember you.””
“I know.””
“Then how can you say you loved me?””
“Because forgetting someone doesn’t mean they stopped existing.””
I looked away.
I hated that the sentence affected me.
I hated that some part of me felt like it had heard it before.
My phone rang.
Daniel.
I stared at his name.
Ethan noticed.
“Don’t answer.””
“Why?””
“Because he knows.””
My eyes snapped back to him.
“How?””
“He always knows when someone gets close to the truth.””
That was exactly what scared me.
I answered.
“Hello?””
Daniel’s voice was calm.
Too calm.
“Where are you?””
I didn’t respond.
“Emma.””
“How did you know I was meeting someone?””
Silence.
A short one.
But enough.
“You’re making mistakes.””
My stomach tightened.
“That’s not an answer.””
“You need to come home.””
“No.””
His tone changed.
“Emma.””
“No.””
I looked at Ethan.
Then at the papers.
“You lied to me.””
Another pause.
“What did you find?””
There it was.
Not denial.
Not confusion.
Fear.
“You know exactly what I found.””
Daniel’s breathing changed.
“Listen to me carefully.””
I waited.
“Some people are going to tell you things because they want something from you.””
“You mean Ethan?””
Silence.
Then:
“So you met him.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“You knew.””
“I knew he would eventually find you.””
The words sent a chill through me.
“You knew he was alive?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did you tell me he didn’t matter?””
Daniel exhaled.
“Because I was protecting you.””
I almost laughed.
“Protecting me?””
“Yes.””
“You erased nine years of my life.””
“That’s not what happened.””
“Then tell me what happened.””
Silence.
“Daniel?””
His voice lowered.
“You don’t remember everything.””
The same words.
The same excuse.
My heart pounded.
“You’re right.””
I looked at Ethan.
“I don’t.””
Daniel became quiet.
“But I’m starting to.””
A long pause.
Then Daniel said:
“Come home before you destroy everything.””
I felt a cold calm settle over me.
“You already did that.””
I ended the call.
Ethan drove behind me to my house.
I didn’t ask him to.
He didn’t ask permission.
We both knew I wasn’t ready to be alone with all of this.
When I walked through my front door, I saw Daniel’s car parked outside.
My stomach dropped.
“He followed me.””
Ethan looked through the window.
“He wants to control the conversation.””
I turned.
“How do you know?””
“Because that’s what he always does.””
The front door opened.
Daniel stepped inside.
His eyes immediately found Ethan.
For a moment, nobody moved.
The two men stared at each other.
Nine years of secrets.
Nine years of lies.
Nine years of anger.
All standing in my living room.
Daniel spoke first.
“You shouldn’t have come here.””
Ethan’s expression hardened.
“You don’t get to decide where I go anymore.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Emma.””
I hated how naturally he said my name.
Like he was still my husband.
Like nothing had changed.
“What did you tell her?””
I stared at him.
“That’s your first question?””
He looked away.
“Emma.””
“No.””
I stepped forward.
“My entire life is falling apart, and you’re worried about what someone told me?””
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“You don’t understand the situation.””
“Then explain it.””
He didn’t.
Because he couldn’t.
Ethan spoke quietly.
“Tell her about the agreement.””
Daniel’s face changed.
Only slightly.
But I saw it.
“What agreement?”” I asked.
Silence.
“Daniel.””
He looked at me.
“Tell me.””
He ran a hand through his hair.
“This is exactly why I didn’t want you involved.””
My anger exploded.
“Because I’m your wife?””
“No.””
His answer came instantly.
“Because you don’t understand the consequences.””
The room went quiet.
I stared at him.
“You never saw me as your partner.””
Daniel looked away.
“Emma.””
“You saw me as someone who could be managed.””
“That’s not true.””
“Isn’t it?””
I pointed toward Ethan.
“You hid him.””
I pointed upstairs.
“You abandoned Lily.””
I pointed at the documents.
“You tried to take everything.””
Daniel’s face hardened.
“I did what I had to do.””
The sentence was so cold.
So simple.
“What does that mean?””
He didn’t answer.
Ethan stepped closer.
“You never told her about the accident.””
My blood froze.
“What accident?””
Daniel looked at Ethan.
“Don’t.””
I turned.
“What accident?””
Nobody spoke.
Then Ethan said:
“The night before Lily was born.””
I looked at Daniel.
“What happened?””
His face changed.
For the first time, he looked afraid.
Not angry.
Not confident.
Afraid.
“Daniel?””
He whispered:
“Emma…”
I waited.
But Ethan spoke first.
“You weren’t supposed to survive.””
The room went silent.
“What?””
Ethan looked at Daniel.
“He knew.””
My heart stopped.
“Knew what?””
Ethan’s voice was barely above a whisper.
“He knew the crash could have killed you.””
I stared at him.
“What crash?””
Daniel closed his eyes.
And in that moment, I knew.
Whatever happened nine years ago wasn’t just a secret.
It was the reason my entire life had been built on a lie.
Ethan looked at me.
“The night before Lily was born, Daniel tampered with your car.””
My breath caught.
“No.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Emma, listen to me—”
I backed away.
“No.””
My voice shook.
“No, because if that’s true…”
I looked between them.
“If that’s true, then Daniel didn’t just steal my marriage.””
My eyes filled.
May you like
“He tried to steal my life.””
And Daniel’s silence was the only answer I needed.
