Chapter 3: The Signature That Was Never Mine

I stared at the document sitting between us.

My name was printed across the top.

My address.

My information.

My signature.

Except it wasn’t my signature.

I knew my own handwriting.

I had signed birthday cards, school forms, mortgage papers, medical documents, and thousands of little notes to Lily’s teachers over the years.

This wasn’t mine.

The curve of the letters was wrong.

The pressure of the pen strokes was wrong.

Everything about it felt like a stranger pretending to be me.

“What is this?”” I whispered.

Victoria didn’t answer immediately.

She watched my face carefully.

“A financial agreement.””

“That doesn’t tell me anything.””

“It’s connected to one of Daniel’s companies.””

I picked up the paper.

The words blurred together.

Asset transfer.

Authorization.

Joint ownership.

My eyes stopped at one sentence.

*Spouse approval required.*

My throat tightened.

“You’re saying Daniel forged my signature?””

Victoria looked uncomfortable.

“I’m saying I found a document that appears to have your signature on it, and I know you didn’t sign it.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“No.””

Her voice was quiet.

“But it’s the truth.””

I pushed the paper back toward her.

“Where did you get this?””

“His office.””

“You went through his things?””

She looked down.

“Yes.””

The honesty made me angrier.

“You were still involved with him.””

“I know.””

“You were helping him betray me.””

“I know.””

“Then why should I trust anything you say?””

Victoria took the question without defending herself.

“You shouldn’t.””

I froze.

She looked at me.

“Not completely.””

The answer caught me off guard.

“Then why are you here?””

“Because Daniel is going to destroy both of us if we let him.””

I leaned back.

“Both of you?””

“Yes.””

“Are you saying he’s trying to hurt you too?””

A sad smile crossed her face.

“He already did.””

I looked away.

For a few seconds, neither of us spoke.

The café around us continued moving.

People laughed.

A waiter carried plates to another table.

A couple near the window discussed weekend plans.

Normal life continued while mine felt like it had been ripped apart.

Finally, I asked, “What exactly did he do?””

Victoria folded her hands.

“When I met Daniel, he told me his marriage was over.””

I said nothing.

“He said you two were only together because of appearances. He said you both lived separate lives.””

My jaw tightened.

“That was a lie.””

“Yes.””

“Why are you telling me this?””

“Because I believed it.””

She swallowed.

“And then I found out he was telling someone else a completely different story.””

“Who?””

“His attorney.””

A strange feeling moved through me.

“What story?””

Victoria looked directly at me.

“That you were unstable.””

The word hit harder than I expected.

“What?””

“He said you were emotional. That you weren’t good with money. That you depended on him.””

I almost laughed.

It was such a ridiculous description of me that it would have been funny if it wasn’t dangerous.

“I managed our entire household.””

“I know.””

“I handled Lily’s school. Her doctors. Her schedules. Our bills.””

“I know.””

“I helped him build his business.””

“I know.””

I looked at her.

“How do you know?””

Victoria hesitated.

“Because I saw the emails.””

“What emails?””

“The ones where Daniel asked you to sign things. The ones where you organized his meetings. The ones where you helped him prepare presentations.””

My face went still.

“He kept those?””

“He kept everything.””

“Why?””

Victoria looked at the document.

“Because he collects proof.””

“Proof of what?””

“That he’s the reason everyone succeeds.””

A chill ran through me.

That sounded like Daniel.

Not the man who used to dance with Lily in the kitchen.

Not the man who held my hand during difficult moments.

The man who had slowly appeared over the last few years.

The man who needed every success to have his name attached.

I looked back at the document.

“How did you find this?””

Victoria took a deep breath.

“Because Daniel made a mistake.””

“What mistake?””

“He trusted me.””

The bitterness in her voice was unmistakable.

“He thought because I loved him, I would never question him.””

I stayed silent.

She continued.

“Last month, I saw him reviewing financial documents late at night.””

“At your place?””

She nodded.

“He was angry.””

“About what?””

“You.””

My stomach tightened.

“What did he say?””

Victoria looked uncomfortable.

“He said you were going to fight him.””

“Fight him?””

“For the house. For money. For custody.””

I shook my head.

“I never said that.””

“I know.””

“Then why would he say that?””

“Because he needed to justify what he was doing.””

“What was he doing?””

Victoria looked around the café.

Then lowered her voice.

“Moving assets before filing.””

My heart started pounding.

“Can he do that?””

“I don’t know everything legally.””

“Then why tell me?””

“Because I know enough to know it’s wrong.””

I looked at the document again.

A thought suddenly occurred to me.

“Why did he leave the divorce papers at home?””

Victoria’s expression changed.

“What do you mean?””

“He could have sent them through an attorney.””

She didn’t answer.

“He wanted me to see them.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Victoria’s eyes narrowed.

“To scare you.””

I felt a wave of anger.

“He wanted me to panic.””

“Yes.””

“So I wouldn’t look deeper.””

“Yes.””

I picked up the document.

For the first time that day, I felt something stronger than heartbreak.

I felt clarity.

Daniel had expected me to cry.

He expected me to beg.

He expected me to ask what I did wrong.

He expected me to be the woman who quietly accepted whatever decision he made.

He didn’t expect me to investigate.

He didn’t expect me to fight.

“What else do you have?”” I asked.

Victoria blinked.

“What?””

“You contacted me because you have more.””

She looked surprised.

“You’re not scared?””

I thought about Lily asking if she was the reason her father was leaving.

I thought about Daniel walking away without looking back.

“I’m terrified.””

My voice softened.

“But I’m more afraid of letting him take everything from my daughter.””

Victoria slowly nodded.

“He has another account.””

“What kind?””

“A private investment account.””

“Where?””

“I don’t know.””

“Then how do you know about it?””

“Because I saw the statements.””

“Where?””

“In his desk drawer.””

I stared at her.

“Why were you looking through his desk?””

She looked ashamed.

“Because I started realizing he lied to me too.””

That answer was painfully human.

I didn’t forgive her.

Not even close.

But for the first time, I understood something.

Daniel had not created a villain and a victim.

He had created a trail of people who believed him.

And now we were all dealing with the damage.

My phone rang.

I looked down.

Daniel’s name appeared on the screen.

Victoria immediately went quiet.

“You should answer.””

I hesitated.

“Why?””

“Because he needs to believe he still controls the conversation.””

I answered.

“Hello?””

Daniel’s voice came through.

“Where are you?””

Not hello.

Not are you okay.

Where are you?

“I’m busy.””

A pause.

“You met with someone.””

My heart stopped.

“How do you know that?””

Another pause.

Then his voice became colder.

“Emma, I’m trying to make this easy for everyone.””

I looked at Victoria.

She was watching me carefully.

“Easy?””

“Yes.””

“You mean easy for you.””

Daniel sighed.

“I knew you would make this difficult.””

I gripped the phone.

“You forged my signature.””

Silence.

Real silence.

Not the kind where someone is thinking.

The kind where someone has been caught.

Then Daniel spoke.

“You don’t understand what you found.””

My pulse increased.

“What does that mean?””

“Come home.””

“No.””

“Emma.””

“No.””

His voice changed.

Less calm.

More threatening.

“You need to be careful about accusing people of things you don’t understand.””

I stood up.

“You mean like abandoning your daughter?””

His silence returned.

Then he said something that made my blood run cold.

“You really shouldn’t involve Lily in this.””

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“She’s your daughter.””

“Exactly.””

The way he said it scared me.

Like Lily was a problem to solve.

Like she was something standing between him and what he wanted.

Then Daniel lowered his voice.

“There are things you don’t know about Lily.””

My heart stopped.

“What are you talking about?””

But he had already hung up.

I stared at the phone.

Victoria stood.

“What happened?””

I looked at her.

“Daniel said there are things I don’t know about Lily.””

Her face changed.

Not confusion.

Fear.

“Emma…”

“What?””

Victoria slowly reached into her bag.

She pulled out another envelope.

“I was hoping he wouldn’t use that.””

I stared at it.

“What is it?””

She placed it on the table.

“I don’t know.””

My hands hovered over the envelope.

“Then why do you have it?””

Victoria looked at me.

“Because Daniel told me never to let you see it.””

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a single page.

May you like

And at the top were five words that made my entire body go cold.

*PATERNITY TEST RESULTS — CONFIDENTIAL*.
