Chapter 6: The Man Who Was Never Supposed to Know
I stared at the handwritten sentence until my eyes started to hurt.
*If anything happens to me, Lily’s biological father must be notified.*
My name was underneath it.
My handwriting.
My signature.
But I had no memory of writing those words.
I zoomed in on the image.
The paper looked old.
The ink had faded slightly.
This wasn’t something Daniel created yesterday.
This was something that had existed for years.
Something I had forgotten.
My fingers moved across the screen.
Then stopped.
Because one thought kept repeating in my mind.
*Biological father.*
Those two words changed everything.
I closed my laptop.
I walked upstairs.
Slowly.
Like if I moved too quickly, my entire life would collapse faster.
Lily was asleep.
Her nightlight glowed softly beside her bed.
She looked peaceful.
Completely unaware that the adults around her had turned her existence into a secret.
I sat beside her.
I watched her breathe.
The small movements.
The messy hair.
The stuffed rabbit pressed against her chest.
I had always told myself that no matter what happened between Daniel and me, Lily would always have both parents.
But what if I had been wrong?
What if there was a part of her story I didn’t know?
A part Daniel had hidden.
A part someone else had been carrying alone.
My phone rang.
Michael.
I answered quietly.
“Tell me everything.””
There was a pause.
“You found the note.””
“Yes.””
“Emma, before I explain, I need you to understand something.””
“What?””
“I don’t know if Daniel knew about this before today.””
I looked at Lily.
“He had the document.””
“Yes.””
“Then how could he not know?””
“Because the note was hidden.””
“Hidden where?””
“In a sealed section of the agreement file.””
I frowned.
“Why would I write something and hide it from myself?””
Michael didn’t answer.
That silence scared me more than anything.
“Michael.””
“I think someone added documents to the file after you signed.””
My heart stopped.
“Someone?””
“Yes.””
“Daniel?””
“I don’t know.””
“But you think he did?””
“I think someone wanted the information buried.””
I stood and walked out of Lily’s room.
“What does this mean?””
“It means you need to find out who Lily’s biological father is before Daniel does.””
The words hit me.
“Before Daniel does?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because if Daniel is willing to use custody, money, and your reputation against you, you need to understand what he knows.””
I gripped the phone.
“He already knows.””
“How do you know?””
“Because he mentioned Lily.””
Michael became quiet.
“What did he say?””
“He said there were things I didn’t know about her.””
A long pause followed.
Then Michael said something that made my blood run cold.
“Emma, Daniel has been looking for someone.””
“Who?””
“I don’t know.””
“Then why tell me?””
“Because the person he’s looking for might be connected to Lily.””
I didn’t sleep that night.
Not really.
Every time I closed my eyes, memories came rushing back.
The hospital.
The birth.
Daniel holding Lily.
The way he cried.
The way he whispered that he would protect her.
Had all of that been fake?
Or had something happened afterward?
Something I didn’t know about?
At 5:30 a.m., I opened an old storage box in my closet.
Inside were things I hadn’t touched in years.
Baby clothes.
Hospital bracelets.
Birthday cards.
Photos.
I found the album from Lily’s first year.
Page after page.
Daniel smiling.
Me smiling.
A family.
But now I looked closer.
Not at the happy moments.
At the details.
A photograph from the hospital.
Daniel standing beside me.
Lily in my arms.
A nurse in the background.
I remembered that day.
I remembered Daniel leaving the room briefly.
I remembered a conversation.
A man’s voice.
A name.
My breath caught.
I flipped through more pictures.
Then I found one.
A photograph I had forgotten existed.
It was taken at the hospital.
A man stood beside the window.
Not Daniel.
Someone else.
I stared at his face.
I knew him.
But from where?
My phone buzzed.
A text message.
Unknown number.
*You finally found the picture.*
My blood turned cold.
I looked around the room.
*Who is this?*
The response came quickly.
*Someone who has been waiting nine years for you to remember.*
I stood frozen.
*How do you know about the picture?*
A few seconds passed.
Then:
*Because I was there.*
I looked back at the photo.
The man by the window.
The stranger I had forgotten.
My fingers trembled.
*Who are you?*
The reply appeared.
*The man Daniel Carter paid to disappear.*
I met him two hours later.
Not because I trusted him.
Because I needed answers.
The meeting place was a small coffee shop outside the city.
Public.
Open.
Safe.
At least, as safe as anything felt anymore.
He was already there.
When I walked in, he stood.
And I immediately recognized him.
Not because I remembered him.
Because I had seen his face in my daughter.
The same eyes.
The same expression when he was nervous.
I stopped walking.
He looked at me.
“Emma?””
My throat tightened.
“Yes.””
He looked down.
“I wasn’t sure you would come.””
“Who are you?””
He swallowed.
“My name is Ethan Miller.””
The name meant nothing.
But my body reacted before my mind did.
Because something about him felt familiar.
“What do you want?””
He looked hurt.
“I want what I should have had nine years ago.””
I said nothing.
He took a breath.
“I want to know my daughter.””
The world seemed to stop.
I gripped the back of the chair.
“Say that again.””
“Lily is my daughter.””
I stared at him.
“No.””
His eyes filled with pain.
“I know this is a lot.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“No, because Daniel is her father.””
Ethan looked away.
“That’s what Daniel wanted you to believe.””
My chest tightened.
“You need to leave.””
“Emma—”
“You don’t get to walk into my life and say something like that.””
“I know.””
“Do you?””
My voice rose.
“Do you know what you’re doing? You’re talking about my daughter.””
“Yes.””
“Then how can you expect me to believe you?””
He reached into his jacket.
I immediately stepped back.
“Don’t.””
He stopped.
“I’m not trying to scare you.””
“Then don’t pull things out of your pocket.””
Slowly, he placed a folder on the table.
“I brought proof.””
I didn’t touch it.
“What kind of proof?””
“Emails.””
“From who?””
“Daniel.””
My heart started racing.
Ethan opened the folder.
“I met you before Daniel did.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“Not officially.””
He looked down.
“But I knew you.””
I stared at him.
“Explain.””
“Before Daniel started his company, before the money, before the house…”
His voice became quieter.
“You and I were together.””
The words hit harder than I expected.
I sat down slowly.
“No.””
“I know you don’t remember.””
“I would remember.””
“You remember parts.””
“What does that mean?””
Ethan looked at me.
“Daniel made sure you forgot.””
The café suddenly felt too small.
“What are you saying?””
“I’m saying the man you married didn’t just betray you.””
He pushed the folder toward me.
“He erased the life you had before him.””
I opened it.
Inside were emails.
Photographs.
Documents.
The first page was dated nine years ago.
Before Lily was born.
The subject line read:
*Need your help handling Emma.*
My hands started shaking.
Because underneath it was Daniel’s name.
May you like
And the message began with a sentence I would never forget.
*Ethan Miller cannot be allowed to tell Emma the truth about the baby.*
