Chapter 10: The Truth We Were Both Trying to Hide

“Victoria wasn’t alone.””

Claire’s words stayed in the air.

I looked at the photograph on the table.

Then at her.

“Who was with her?””

Claire didn’t answer immediately.

That frightened me more than if she had.

“Claire.””

She placed her phone down.

“The footage is unclear.””

“But you said she wasn’t alone.””

“Yes.””

“Who was with her?””

Claire looked at Michael.

A silent conversation passed between them.

One I didn’t understand.

“What?””

Michael exhaled.

“Emma, there’s something we need to tell you.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

Another secret.

Another thing everyone knew except me.

“Go ahead.””

Michael looked at the documents.

“The person standing with Victoria was Daniel.””

The room went silent.

I laughed once.

Not because it was funny.

Because my brain couldn’t accept it.

“Daniel?””

“Yes.””

“No.””

Claire nodded slowly.

“The footage shows them together.””

I stood.

“But Victoria helped me.””

Michael didn’t respond.

“She gave me the documents.””

“Yes.””

“She showed me the evidence.””

“Yes.””

“She warned me about him.””

Michael looked at me.

“Did she ever say she wanted Daniel punished?””

I thought about it.

No.

She had never said that.

She had only said she wanted me to know the truth.

A horrible realization moved through me.

“What if she wasn’t helping me?””

Nobody answered.

Because we all knew.

“What if she was controlling the story?””

Claire nodded.

“That’s what we need to determine.””

I picked up the photograph.

Victoria had been afraid.

She had looked guilty.

She had admitted things.

But guilt and honesty were not the same thing.

“What does Daniel have on her?””

Michael looked surprised.

“What makes you think he has something?””

“Because nobody stays connected to Daniel unless he has something they need.””

The words sounded strange coming from my mouth.

But they were true.

Michael looked at Claire.

Then back at me.

“Victoria was involved with Daniel for years.””

“I know.””

“But what you don’t know is that Daniel ended the relationship months ago.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“She thought he was leaving you for her.””

My chest tightened.

“But he wasn’t.””

“No.””

“He was never planning to choose her.””

Michael nodded.

“He planned to walk away from everyone.””

Everyone.

Not just me.

Not just Lily.

Everyone.

“What happened when Victoria found out?””

Michael looked at the photograph.

“I think she realized she had been used.””

“So she came to me.””

“Yes.””

“To expose him.””

“Maybe.””

The uncertainty bothered me.

“Maybe?””

Michael sighed.

“Emma, people can have more than one reason for doing something.””

I thought about that.

Victoria could have regretted what she did.

She could have wanted revenge.

She could have wanted to protect me.

She could have wanted to protect herself.

The truth was probably somewhere in the middle.

My phone buzzed.

A message.

From Victoria.

*I know you found out.*

My hands tightened.

Claire looked at me.

“Don’t answer yet.””

But another message appeared.

*Please. You need to hear me before Daniel tells you his version.*

I stared at the screen.

Then typed:

*Where are you?*

The reply came quickly.

*The old hospital. Where Lily was born.*

My heart stopped.

Claire immediately shook her head.

“No.””

“I need answers.””

“It could be a trap.””

“Yes.””

She looked at me.

“And you’re still going?””

I looked at the documents.

At Lily’s photo.

At the years of lies.

“Yes.””

Because there was one thing I had learned.

Running from the truth didn’t protect me.

It only protected the people hiding it.

The hospital looked exactly the same.

That was the cruelest part.

The world continued.

The same entrance.

The same hallway.

The same lights.

Nine years ago, I had walked through these doors believing I was about to start the happiest chapter of my life.

Now I was walking through them trying to understand how that chapter had been written.

Victoria stood near the maternity ward entrance.

She looked different.

Not because she had changed.

Because I saw her differently.

“You know,” she said quietly.

It wasn’t a question.

“Yes.””

Her eyes closed.

“I knew you would.””

“You and Daniel.””

She looked away.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because he asked me to meet him.””

“And you went.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Victoria swallowed.

“Because he told me you had found Ethan.””

I froze.

“You knew Ethan existed?””

“Yes.””

“How long?””

She looked at the floor.

“Almost as long as Daniel did.””

The anger came back.

“You knew.””

“I knew there was someone from your past.””

“And you said nothing.””

“I was afraid.””

I stepped closer.

“Afraid of what?””

“Daniel.””

That answer should not have surprised me.

But it did.

“What did he tell you?””

Victoria looked toward the maternity ward.

“He told me you were sick after Lily was born.””

My heart tightened.

“Sick?””

“Yes.””

“He told me you had memory problems.””

I stared at her.

“He told me you were confused about Ethan.””

My hands curled into fists.

“He made me sound unstable.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because he needed everyone to believe his version.””

I shook my head.

“You helped him.””

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt.

“I helped him.””

Victoria’s voice broke.

“And I regret it.””

“Regret doesn’t change anything.””

“I know.””

She reached into her bag.

She pulled out a small box.

“I found this in Daniel’s storage unit.””

I didn’t take it.

“What is it?””

“Something he kept.””

“Why?””

“Because he keeps everything.””

Slowly, I opened it.

Inside were old items.

A hospital bracelet.

Photographs.

Letters.

My breath caught.

One photograph showed me.

Before Daniel.

Before the house.

Before everything.

I was younger.

Happier.

Standing beside Ethan.

I looked at Victoria.

“I don’t remember this.””

“I know.””

Under the photograph was a letter.

My name was written on the front.

I opened it.

The handwriting was mine.

But the words felt like they belonged to someone else.

*Ethan, if anything happens and I forget, please know I never stopped loving you.*

My eyes filled.

Another memory surfaced.

Not a complete one.

A feeling.

A conversation.

Ethan holding my hand.

Me crying.

Daniel angry.

A choice.

Then nothing.

Victoria whispered:

“Daniel didn’t just hide Ethan.””

I looked up.

“He hid you from yourself.””

Two weeks later, the truth finally came out.

Not all at once.

Not dramatically.

Real life rarely works that way.

There were lawyers.

Documents.

Investigations.

Meetings.

Questions.

But slowly, piece by piece, Daniel’s story collapsed.

The forged signatures were exposed.

The hidden accounts were discovered.

The financial transfers were investigated.

And the evidence from nine years earlier changed everything.

Daniel had not protected me.

He had controlled the information around me.

He had built a life based on a version of the truth where he was always the hero.

But heroes don’t erase people.

They don’t abandon children.

They don’t destroy someone’s choices because they are afraid of losing control.

Months later, I sat in my kitchen.

The same kitchen where Daniel had asked for everything except Lily.

But this time, the room felt different.

Lily sat across from me doing homework.

Max slept at her feet.

Normal.

Peaceful.

Alive.

My phone buzzed.

A message from Ethan.

*I know this is complicated. I know I can’t suddenly become part of your life. But I want you to know I’m here whenever Lily is ready.*

I smiled sadly.

Because some wounds healed slowly.

Some relationships had to be rebuilt.

Some truths arrived too late.

But late was not the same as never.

Lily looked up.

“Mommy?””

“Yeah?””

“Are you happy?””

The question surprised me.

I looked around.

At the home I fought to keep.

At the daughter I protected.

At the life I almost lost.

“Yes.””

She smiled.

“Really?””

I nodded.

“Really.””

That night, after she went to bed, I stood in the kitchen alone.

I thought about the woman I had been nine years ago.

A woman who trusted too easily.

A woman who believed love meant never questioning someone.

A woman who thought losing her marriage meant losing everything.

She was wrong.

Because Daniel Carter wanted the house.

The money.

The cars.

The accounts.

Everything he could own.

But he never understood the one thing he could never take.

The truth.

And the truth was this:

May you like

He didn’t destroy my family when he walked away.

He gave me the chance to finally see who was worth fighting for.
