Chapter 11: The Message From My Mother
I wanted to watch the tape immediately.
Every part of me screamed to put it in.
To hear my mother's voice.
To finally understand.
But the words on the label stopped me.
Watch alone.
Not with my father.
Not with Vanessa.
Not with anyone.
My mother had chosen those words carefully.
She knew.
Some truths could not be shared until the right moment.
Dad drove us back home.
The entire way, nobody asked about the tape.
Maybe because everyone knew the answer.
We all wanted to know.
But we were all afraid.
When we arrived, I carried the box upstairs to my old bedroom.
The room looked exactly the same.
My childhood books.
Old photographs.
A stuffed animal my mother bought me when I was seven.
A room frozen in time.
I placed the tape on my desk.
Then I noticed something.
There was another envelope inside the box.
My name.
Again.
My hands trembled.
I opened it.
Inside was a short note.
Emily,
If you are watching the video, it means the people who tried to hide the truth failed.
I am sorry you had to discover all of this this way.
But I knew you were strong.
Stronger than anyone realized.
I wiped my eyes.
Then I read the final line.
The video will answer one question. But it will create another.
I looked at the tape.
My mother had known.
She had known everything would happen.
I found an old player in the storage room downstairs.
My father watched me carry it upstairs.
"Emily.""
I looked back.
"I'm going to watch it.""
He nodded.
"Okay.""
But his eyes were full of fear.
Not because of the video.
Because he knew my mother better than anyone.
And he knew what she was capable of revealing.
I closed my bedroom door.
Inserted the tape.
Pressed play.
The screen flickered.
Static.
Then...
My mother appeared.
I stopped breathing.
She looked exactly like I remembered.
Her hair.
Her smile.
Her eyes.
For a moment, eleven years disappeared.
"Hi, Emily.""
My knees weakened.
Because she wasn't speaking to the world.
She was speaking to me.
"If you're watching this, then you're older now.""
She smiled sadly.
"I wish I could have been there to see who you became.""
Tears fell down my face.
She continued.
"First, I need you to know something.""
She leaned closer to the camera.
"You were never a mistake.""
I covered my mouth.
"I know people may have made you feel unwanted. I know people may have made you question yourself.""
She paused.
"But you were the reason I fought.""
The room blurred.
My mother took a breath.
"There is a truth about your father that you need to understand.""
I froze.
Arthur.
"Arthur loved you from the moment he knew about you.""
I looked confused.
"Yes.""
The video continued.
"Arthur is not your biological father.""
My chest tightened.
"But he is your father.""
A tear fell from my eye.
"He chose you.""
My mother smiled.
"Never forget that.""
I cried silently.
Because those words healed something I didn't know was still broken.
Then her expression changed.
Serious.
"The man who is your biological father is dangerous.""
My body went cold.
"Michael Hayes was not just involved in the company.""
She looked directly into the camera.
"He was involved in the reason I died.""
I stopped breathing.
The video continued.
"Michael wanted control of everything. The company. The money. The shares.""
A pause.
"But most importantly...""
She looked terrified.
"He wanted Emily.""
I stepped back.
Why?
Why would someone want me?
Then my mother's next words answered.
"Because Emily carries something Michael can never have.""
The video cut briefly.
Static.
Then her voice returned.
"Emily, your birth certificate was changed.""
My heart stopped.
"Someone erased the truth about your birth because your existence threatened their plan.""
I stared at the screen.
My mother continued.
"The original document is hidden.""
A pause.
"And whoever finds it will understand why Michael has spent years trying to control your life.""
The video ended.
The screen went black.
I sat frozen.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
Again.
I answered.
No one spoke.
Only breathing.
Then a man's voice.
A voice I had never heard before.
But somehow, I knew exactly who it was.
"Emily.""
My blood turned cold.
"Who is this?""
A quiet laugh.
"You finally watched the video.""
I couldn't move.
"Michael?""
Silence.
Then:
"Your mother always underestimated how curious you would become.""
My hand tightened around the phone.
"Where are you?""
The man laughed again.
"Closer than you think.""
The call ended.
And before I could process it...
A message appeared.
One photograph.
A picture of me.
Taken that morning.
Standing outside the storage facility.
May you like
Someone had been watching me.
For years.
