Thinking

Chapter 1: The Camera Never Lies

My stepsister thought destroying my graduation dress would destroy my happiness.

She was wrong.

Because when my father watched the kitchen security footage that night, he didn't just discover what happened to my dress.

He discovered everything my stepfamily had been hiding from him.

My name is Emily Carter, and for years, I believed surviving my own home was something I had to do quietly.

I believed if I stayed kind enough, patient enough, and invisible enough, the cruelty would eventually stop.

I was wrong.

The moment my father unlocked the recording, the entire kitchen fell silent.

Vanessa stood frozen beside the counter.

Diane's face tightened.

And I watched the confidence disappear from both of them.

Dad connected his phone to the kitchen monitor.

"Arthur, this is ridiculous," Diane said quickly.

"You're really going to waste your time watching a video over a dress?""

Dad didn't look at her.

"A dress that my daughter paid for herself.""

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

Vanessa noticed it too.

She stepped forward.

"Dad, seriously, it was an accident.""

Dad finally looked at her.

"Then watching the video won't hurt you.""

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

The screen loaded.

A few seconds later, the footage appeared.

There I was.

Walking into the kitchen.

Hearing laughter.

Seeing my dress.

Seeing Vanessa standing on it.

The room felt colder with every second.

Dad watched without blinking.

The recording showed Vanessa looking directly at the camera before stepping harder onto the fabric.

She knew.

She knew exactly what she was doing.

Then her voice came through the speakers.

"I was wondering how you'd look wearing this tomorrow.""

My stomach twisted.

I had heard those words before.

But hearing them again while my father watched was different.

It was like watching someone hurt me all over again.

Diane whispered, "Vanessa didn't mean anything by it.""

Dad turned slowly.

"She laughed while destroying something Emily worked months for.""

"It was just jealousy between sisters.""

"Sisters don't do this.""

The way he said it made Vanessa take a step back.

For once, she looked like the nineteen-year-old girl she actually was.

Not the queen of the house.

Not the person who always won.

Just someone who had finally been caught.

Then the video continued.

My heart stopped.

Because the camera captured something I hadn't seen.

After I ran upstairs crying, Vanessa and Diane stayed in the kitchen.

And they started talking.

Diane looked at the door.

"Did you get the envelope?""

Vanessa nodded.

"Yes.""

My eyebrows pulled together.

Envelope?

Dad noticed it too.

"What envelope?""

Neither of them answered.

The footage continued.

Vanessa pulled a brown envelope from her purse.

Diane smiled.

"Good. Tomorrow, everything will finally change.""

Dad's face darkened.

"Change how?""

Vanessa immediately turned off the monitor.

"No more.""

Her voice was shaking.

Dad stared at her.

"Turn it back on.""

"Dad—"

"Turn. It. Back. On.""

She didn't move.

And that was when I realized something.

The dress wasn't the reason Vanessa was afraid.

The dress was just the beginning.

Dad walked toward the monitor himself.

But before he could restart the footage, Vanessa whispered something that made the entire room go quiet.

"Emily doesn't know what Mom and I found.""

I looked at her.

"What did you find?""

Vanessa's eyes moved to mine.

And for the first time in years, she looked scared of me.

Not because I was stronger.

But because I was finally about to learn the truth.

Then Dad pressed play.

May you like

And the next thing we saw on that screen changed everything.

Because the envelope on the video had my name written across the front.
