Chapter 10: The Night Someone Came Back
The darkness lasted only a few seconds.
But in those few seconds, everyone in the kitchen changed.
Fear has a way of revealing people.
Dad immediately moved toward me.
Richard grabbed his phone.
Vanessa froze beside the counter.
And Diane...
Diane looked like she already knew why the lights had gone out.
That scared me more than the darkness itself.
"Everyone stay here," Dad said.
His voice was low.
Controlled.
The same voice he used when something serious happened at his company.
But this time, I wasn't watching a businessman.
I was watching a father who was terrified of losing his daughter.
The emergency lights flickered on.
The kitchen returned in a dim red glow.
Then we heard it.
A sound from upstairs.
A door closing.
My heart jumped.
"Someone is in the house," Vanessa whispered.
Dad looked at her.
"Are you sure?""
She nodded.
"I heard footsteps.""
Richard immediately called security.
"No signal.""
He looked at his phone.
"The cameras are offline.""
My stomach dropped.
The cameras.
The same cameras that exposed Vanessa.
The same cameras that revealed the truth.
Someone had disabled them.
Dad picked up the recorder from the table and put it into his pocket.
"Emily, you and Vanessa stay here.""
I shook my head.
"No.""
"Emily.""
"No more.""
I looked at him.
"No more secrets. No more people deciding what I can handle.""
His expression softened.
For a moment, he saw the little girl he had been trying to protect.
Then he saw the woman I had become.
Finally, he nodded.
"Stay behind me.""
We walked through the house together.
Every step felt louder.
The hallway where I had cried as a child.
The staircase where I used to wait for my mother to come home.
The walls that had held so many memories.
Except now I wondered how many of those memories were lies.
At the top of the stairs, Dad stopped.
A sound came from the office.
A drawer opening.
He looked at me.
Then slowly opened the door.
The office was empty.
But something was wrong.
The drawers were open.
Papers were scattered everywhere.
Someone had been searching.
Richard walked inside.
"The trust documents.""
Dad looked at him.
"What?""
Richard rushed to the desk.
"The original file.""
My heart tightened.
"Was it here?""
He nodded.
"It was.""
Dad looked around.
"What else is missing?""
Richard checked quickly.
Then his face changed.
"The recorder.""
I froze.
"What?""
"The backup copy.""
Dad stared.
"You had a backup?""
Richard looked ashamed.
"I made one after I heard the recording eleven years ago.""
"Where is it?""
Richard didn't answer.
He didn't need to.
The answer was written all over his face.
"Someone took it.""
A cold feeling moved through me.
Someone wasn't just trying to hide the past.
They were trying to erase it.
Then Vanessa shouted from downstairs.
"Emily!""
We ran back.
She was standing near the front door.
Holding something.
A piece of paper.
"I found this outside.""
Dad took it.
His face changed.
"What is it?""
He handed it to me.
It was a note.
Only one sentence.
Written by hand.
*Your mother should have stayed quiet. You should have too.*
My hands shook.
Dad immediately grabbed his phone.
"We're calling the police.""
But before he could dial, another sound came from outside.
A car engine.
Everyone rushed to the window.
A black sedan was leaving the driveway.
Dad ran outside.
"Stop!""
The car didn't slow down.
It disappeared into the street.
I stood frozen.
Because even though I couldn't see the person driving...
I knew something.
They had been watching us.
They knew about the letter.
They knew about the recorder.
They knew I was finally close to the truth.
That night, nobody slept.
The police arrived.
They searched the house.
They collected fingerprints.
They asked questions.
But the person who entered left almost nothing behind.
Almost.
At three in the morning, I sat alone in the living room.
The house was quiet.
Too quiet.
Then Vanessa walked in.
She sat beside me.
For a while, neither of us spoke.
It was strange.
A few days ago, she was the person who destroyed the one thing I had saved for.
Now she was the only person who understood what it felt like to discover your entire family had been built on lies.
"I'm sorry.""
I looked at her.
"For what?""
Her eyes filled with tears.
"For the dress.""
I looked away.
"You really hurt me.""
"I know.""
"No, Vanessa.""
I turned back.
"You don't know.""
She nodded.
"You're right.""
She looked down.
"I was jealous of you.""
The confession surprised me.
"Why?""
She laughed softly.
"Because you had the one thing I never had.""
"What?""
"A real connection with Dad.""
I stared at her.
"Vanessa...""
"My whole life, Mom told me I was special. But it always felt like I was special because I was useful.""
Her voice cracked.
"She only loved me when I did what she wanted.""
I didn't know what to say.
Because I understood.
Different pain.
Same wound.
Then Vanessa reached into her pocket.
"I have something else.""
She handed me a small key.
"What is this?""
"My mother's old storage locker.""
I looked at her.
"Why do you have it?""
"Because I found it hidden in her closet.""
My fingers closed around the key.
"What is inside?""
Vanessa looked afraid.
"I don't know.""
"Then why give it to me?""
She looked toward the dark hallway.
"Because whatever is inside...""
She swallowed.
"Mom was terrified someone would find it.""
The next morning, Dad drove us to the storage facility.
Nobody spoke.
The key felt heavier with every mile.
When we reached the locker, Dad stood beside me.
"You don't have to open it.""
I looked at him.
"Yes, I do.""
I inserted the key.
The lock clicked.
The door opened.
Inside was a single box.
A photograph.
A folder.
And an old video tape.
On the front of the tape was handwriting.
My mother's handwriting.
May you like
Only four words.
*For Emily. Watch alone.*
