Chapter 6: The Name He Was Afraid to Say
Mark didn’t sleep that night.
Neither did I.
We stayed in separate rooms, separated by a hallway that suddenly felt like a mile.
At 3:00 a.m., I heard him walking downstairs.
I found him sitting in the dark kitchen.
No lights.
No phone.
Just him staring at the table.
The same table where we had celebrated birthdays, anniversaries, and ordinary Tuesday nights.
“Who is she?”” I asked.
He didn’t look up.
“Sarah.””
“Say her name.””
His jaw tightened.
“I don’t want to hurt you more.””
I almost laughed.
“You lost the right to decide that.””
He closed his eyes.
“Her name is Megan.””
The name meant nothing.
And somehow, that made it worse.
“Who is Megan?””
Mark rubbed his hands together.
“She was someone I knew.””
“When?””
“Years ago.””
I stared at him.
“Before me?””
He hesitated.
That hesitation told me everything.
“After.””
The room went silent.
“How many years after?””
“Sarah—”
“How many?””
“Two.””
Two years into our marriage.
Two years after our wedding.
Two years after he promised me forever.
My legs felt weak.
“You had another woman two years after we got married?””
“No.””
His answer came too quickly.
I looked at him.
“Then what was she?””
He looked away.
“A friend.””
I laughed bitterly.
“A friend.””
I walked closer.
“Do you know how ridiculous that sounds?””
“It wasn’t like Ellie.””
“Then explain.””
He was quiet.
Finally, he whispered:
“Megan knew about Lily.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“She found out.””
“Found out what?””
“That I had a daughter.””
I stared at him.
“And?””
“She threatened to tell you.””
My stomach twisted.
“Why?””
Mark’s face changed.
“She wanted something.””
“What?””
He didn’t answer.
I stepped closer.
“What did she want?””
“Money.””
I shook my head.
“So she blackmailed you?””
He nodded.
“How much?””
“Sarah…”
“How much?””
“Over the years?””
I froze.
“Over the years?””
Mark looked destroyed.
“She contacted me again and again.””
The room spun.
“You’ve been paying her?””
“Yes.””
“How much?””
He whispered the number.
I sat down.
Because it wasn’t a small amount.
It was enough to change our lives.
Enough to explain why he suddenly became secretive with finances.
Enough to explain late nights.
Enough to explain missing money.
“You stole from us.””
“No.””
“You spent our family’s money hiding your secrets.””
He looked down.
“I was trying to protect you.””
I stood.
“Stop saying that.””
My voice echoed through the kitchen.
“Stop pretending every terrible thing you did was somehow for me.””
He flinched.
“Because you weren’t protecting me.””
I pointed upstairs.
“You were protecting yourself.””
Mark didn’t argue.
Because he knew.
The next morning, I opened every account.
Every statement.
Every email.
Every hidden folder.
And what I found was worse than I expected.
There were payments to Megan.
Messages with Ellie.
And one document I didn’t understand.
A legal document.
I stared at the name at the top.
Then I felt the same cold feeling I had felt at the birthday party.
Because the document wasn’t about money.
It was about custody.
I waited until Mark came home.
Then I placed it on the table.
“What is this?””
He stopped.
His face changed immediately.
“Where did you get that?””
“Answer me.””
He didn’t.
I tapped the paper.
“This says you were preparing for custody arrangements.””
His eyes lowered.
“Sarah…”
“Were you planning to leave?””
“No.””
“Then why?””
He sat down.
“I was scared.””
“Of what?””
He looked at me.
And for the first time, I saw genuine fear.
“Of losing Will.””
The answer confused me.
“Why would you lose Will?””
He didn’t speak.
I felt a strange pressure building in my chest.
“Mark.””
He looked away.
“I found out something about Will.””
My blood ran cold.
“What?””
He swallowed.
“Something from the hospital.””
I couldn’t move.
“What are you talking about?””
He stood.
“Sarah, there’s something I never told you about the day Will was born.””
The room went completely silent.
I remembered that day.
The happiest day of my life.
Mark crying when he held our son.
The photo of him smiling.
The promise that we were finally a family.
But now he was looking at me like that memory was hiding something.
“What happened at the hospital?””
He opened his mouth.
Then stopped.
Before he could answer, my phone buzzed.
A message.
From an unknown number.
One photo.
No words.
I opened it.
And my entire body went cold.
Because the picture was taken the day Will was born.
And standing beside Mark in the hospital hallway was Megan.
Holding a file.
May you like
And underneath the photo was a message:
*“Ask your husband why he almost lost custody of your son before you ever brought him home.””*
