Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Birthday Gift

I sent everyone home early.

I didn’t remember making the announcement.

I didn’t remember smiling.

I only remembered standing in the middle of the backyard while my husband’s friends looked confused and my son held onto my leg.

“Thank you for coming,” I had said.

My voice sounded like someone else’s.

“The party’s over.””

People asked questions.

I ignored them.

Mark tried to explain.

Ellie tried to apologize.

I heard every word.

I understood none of them.

By midnight, the house was quiet.

Too quiet.

The decorations were still hanging.

The balloons still floated near the ceiling.

The birthday banner still said:

HAPPY 40TH, MARK!

I hated that banner.

I hated that I had spent hours choosing colors for a day that would become the day my marriage cracked open.

Will was asleep in his room.

I sat alone at the kitchen table.

The same table where I had planned Mark’s surprise.

The same table where Ellie helped me write the guest list.

My phone sat in front of me.

I had dozens of messages.

Friends asking if I was okay.

Family asking what happened.

I couldn’t answer any of them.

At 12:47 a.m., Mark came downstairs.

He looked exhausted.

“Can we talk?””

I didn’t look up.

“We’ve talked enough.””

“Sarah.””

I stared at him.

“Did you love her?””

He stopped.

That pause was an answer.

“I don’t know.””

I laughed quietly.

“You don’t know?””

“I loved you.””

“That wasn’t my question.””

He sat across from me.

“I never stopped caring about you.””

“But you stopped choosing me.””

He looked down.

For once, he had nothing to say.

I picked up the silver necklace from the table.

Ellie had taken it off before leaving.

I turned it over.

The pendant was scratched.

On the back were tiny engraved letters.

Not my initials.

Not a date.

A name.

I held it closer.

My stomach tightened.

Because the name wasn’t Ellie.

It wasn’t mine either.

“Who is Rachel?”” I asked.

Mark froze.

Completely.

The color disappeared from his face.

“Where did you see that?””

I looked at him carefully.

“So you know the name.””

He stood up.

“Sarah, listen to me.””

“No.””

My voice was quiet now.

Almost empty.

“Who is Rachel?””

He ran a hand through his hair.

“I can explain.””

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

I stood.

“First Ellie says she can explain. Then you say you can explain.””

I held up the necklace.

“But neither of you explains anything.””

Mark looked terrified.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Terrified.

That scared me more.

“Sarah, there’s something about Ellie you don’t know.””

I stared at him.

“Clearly.””

He walked toward the window.

For several seconds, he just stood there.

Then he whispered:

“She wasn’t the first person.””

The words hit harder than I expected.

“What?””

Mark turned around.

His eyes were wet.

“Ellie wasn’t the first.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“How many?””

He didn’t answer.

“Mark.””

He closed his eyes.

“One.””

The room spun.

“One more?””

He nodded.

I grabbed the chair.

“Who?””

He hesitated.

And then my phone rang.

Both of us looked at it.

Unknown number.

I almost ignored it.

But something inside me told me not to.

I answered.

“Hello?””

For a few seconds, nobody spoke.

Then a woman’s voice came through.

A voice I had never heard before.

“Is this Sarah Collins?””

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“Yes.””

The woman took a shaky breath.

“I’m sorry. I know this is the worst possible time to call you.””

I looked at Mark.

He had gone completely still.

“Who is this?””

The woman was quiet.

Then she said:

“My name is Rachel.””

The necklace slipped from my hand.

Because the woman on the phone continued:

“And I’m calling because your husband has been lying to you about what happened six years ago.””

I couldn’t breathe.

Mark whispered my name.

But I ignored him.

“Six years ago?””

Rachel’s voice broke.

“Yes.””

A pause.

May you like

Then the words that changed everything:

“Sarah, Will isn’t the only child Mark has been hiding from you.””
