Chapter 5: The Lie Behind the Beginning

I stayed at Rachel’s house for almost two hours.

Two hours that felt like two years.

Every answer created another question.

Every truth opened another wound.

Rachel sat across from me at her kitchen table while Lily played quietly in the next room.

“Tell me everything,” I said.

Rachel looked nervous.

“You’re sure?””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I’m not sure about anything anymore.””

She nodded slowly.

“When Mark told you about me, what did he say?””

I remembered.

I remembered the story because Mark had told it casually years ago.

Like it was ancient history.

Like it didn’t matter.

“He said you two dated briefly.””

Rachel looked down.

“And?””

“He said you wanted something serious. He didn’t.””

She gave a sad smile.

“That’s convenient.””

“What really happened?””

Rachel took a deep breath.

“We were together for almost three years.””

I felt my stomach drop.

Three years.

Not months.

Not a mistake.

Three years.

“He told me you barely knew each other.””

Rachel laughed quietly.

“That’s what he says.””

She reached into a drawer and pulled out a small box.

Inside were photographs.

Old photographs.

Mark.

Rachel.

A pregnant Rachel.

A younger version of my husband smiling beside her.

My hands shook as I looked through them.

“You were pregnant when I met him.””

“Yes.””

“And he told me nothing.””

Rachel nodded.

“He told me he was scared.””

“Scared?””

“He said you were everything he wanted.””

I looked at her.

“And you?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I was the person he left behind.””

The words sat between us.

Heavy.

Uncomfortable.

True.

“What happened after Lily was born?””

Rachel looked toward the hallway.

“Mark visited at first.””

“At first?””

“He would come every weekend.””

I closed my eyes.

The image was painful.

My husband spending Saturdays somewhere else.

While I believed he was working.

“He told me he needed time.””

Rachel continued.

“Then you happened.””

I looked at her.

“Me?””

“He met you.””

I didn’t know whether to feel guilty or angry.

“You think I stole him?””

“No.””

Rachel shook her head.

“I think Mark made choices.””

That sentence stayed with me.

Because she was right.

People always wanted to blame the person who appeared last.

But Mark had been the one holding every door open.

“He told me he had to choose,” Rachel said.

“Choose?””

“He said he wanted a clean life.””

I stared at her.

A clean life.

That phrase felt disgusting.

Because what he meant was a life where his past was hidden.

A life where I could love him without knowing the truth.

A life where Rachel and Lily existed somewhere outside my reality.

“What about Ellie?”” I asked.

Rachel’s expression changed.

“What about her?””

“She’s been involved for six months.””

Rachel looked surprised.

“I didn’t know.””

“You didn’t?””

She shook her head.

“Sarah, I haven’t spoken to Mark in almost a year.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

“Because I found out something.””

The way she said it made me nervous.

“What?””

Rachel looked at Lily.

Then back at me.

“Mark wasn’t just hiding Lily.””

My chest tightened.

“You already said that.””

“I mean he was hiding something else from both of us.””

The room felt smaller.

“What?””

Rachel opened her phone.

She scrolled through messages.

Then she handed it to me.

There was a conversation.

Between Rachel and Mark.

The date was three months earlier.

Mark:

I need you to stop asking questions.

Rachel:

I know what you did.

Mark:

You don’t understand.

Rachel:

I understand enough.

I looked at Rachel.

“What is this?””

She swallowed.

“Before I stopped letting him see Lily alone, I found out he was lying about money.””

“Money?””

“He had been sending someone money.””

My heart sank.

“Who?””

Rachel shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

I stared at the messages.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

She looked away.

“Because I thought it was none of my business anymore.””

The silence was broken by tiny footsteps.

Lily appeared holding her drawing.

“Mommy?””

Rachel smiled.

“Yes, sweetheart?””

The little girl walked toward me.

She held out the picture.

“For you.””

I looked down.

The drawing showed four people again.

But this time, there was something different.

A fifth figure.

A woman.

Standing far away.

“Who is that?”” I asked.

Lily pointed.

“That’s the lady Daddy says we don’t talk about.””

Rachel went pale.

“What lady?””

Lily shrugged.

“She came to our house once.””

I looked at Rachel.

“When?””

The little girl thought.

“Before Christmas.””

My heart pounded.

“Did Daddy know her?””

Lily nodded.

“He was scared.””

The room went silent.

Because for the first time, I realized something terrifying.

Maybe Ellie wasn’t the biggest betrayal.

Maybe Ellie was just another piece of a much larger secret.

That night, when I returned home, Mark was waiting.

He stood in the living room.

No excuses.

No apologies.

Just fear.

“You went to see Rachel.””

I stared at him.

“Yes.””

His face dropped.

“Sarah, you need to understand—”

“No.””

I placed the phone on the table.

“You need to understand something.””

He looked at me.

“I’m done listening to the version of the story you created.””

His eyes moved to my phone.

“What is that?””

“A conversation between you and Rachel.””

He froze.

Then I asked the question that made his entire expression change.

“Who is the woman you told Lily not to talk about?””

Mark didn’t answer.

May you like

And that was when I knew.

I had finally found the secret he was truly afraid of.
