Chapter 9: The Night Claire Told The Truth
I stood on the porch, staring at the note attached to Emma’s stuffed rabbit.
My hands felt numb.
The handwriting was impossible.
Claire’s handwriting.
The same curves.
The same pressure on certain letters.
The same way she wrote the letter “D” in my name.
*She never died alone, Daniel.*
For a moment, I forgot where I was.
I forgot Vanessa was waiting somewhere inside.
I forgot that Emma needed me.
All I could think about was Claire.
Because those four words changed everything.
She never died alone.
I had spent eighteen months believing I was the last person to speak to my wife.
I had spent eighteen months carrying the guilt of not being there.
Not holding her hand.
Not telling her one more time that I loved her.
But now…
Someone else had been there.
Someone knew what happened.
Someone had watched her die.
I pushed open the front door.
“Vanessa?””
My voice echoed through the empty house.
No answer.
The place smelled old.
Dust.
Wood.
Rain.
It was abandoned, but someone had been here recently.
Fresh footprints marked the floor.
A small toy sat on a table.
Emma’s toy.
Another message.
*Upstairs.*
I should have been afraid.
I was.
But fear had changed.
Before, I was afraid of losing my family.
Now, I was afraid I had never known my family at all.
I walked upstairs slowly.
Every step creaked.
At the end of the hallway was a bedroom door.
Open.
Inside was a chair.
A camera.
And Vanessa.
She was sitting calmly beside the window.
No panic.
No anger.
No attempt to run.
She looked almost peaceful.
“Hello, Daniel.””
I stopped.
“Where is Emma?””
Her eyes moved to the chair beside her.
“She’s safe.””
“That’s not an answer.””
“It’s the truth.””
I stepped forward.
“If you hurt her—”
“You think I would hurt Emma?””
Her voice cracked slightly.
For a second, she looked genuinely offended.
“I loved that little girl.””
I stared at her.
“You locked her in a room.””
Her expression changed.
“She misunderstood.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“Not this time.””
The room went silent.
Vanessa looked away.
“You found everything.””
“Yes.””
“The cameras.””
“Yes.””
“The letters.””
“Yes.””
“The videos.””
She smiled sadly.
“And Claire’s little investigation.””
I felt anger rise.
“Don’t talk about her like that.””
“Why?””
Her voice became sharper.
“Because she’s dead?””
I froze.
Vanessa stood.
“You still worship her.””
“She was my wife.””
“And I was supposed to be your future.””
I stared at her.
There it was.
The truth hidden beneath every lie.
Not love.
Not grief.
Possession.
“You were never trying to be part of our family.””
Her eyes hardened.
“I was.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You wanted Claire’s place.””
Her silence answered.
“You wanted her life.””
Vanessa looked at me.
“You have no idea what it feels like to watch someone have everything you deserve.””
I frowned.
“Deserve?””
She laughed quietly.
“Yes.””
“You think my wife’s life belonged to you?””
“You don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
For the first time, Vanessa looked emotional.
Not guilty.
Not sorry.
Angry.
“Claire had everything.””
“She had a husband who loved her. A daughter who adored her. A beautiful home.””
Her voice lowered.
“And she didn’t even appreciate it.””
I stared.
“You’re blaming Claire because you were jealous?””
“You make it sound simple.””
“It is.””
“No.””
She stepped closer.
“It started before you.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“What?””
“Claire always had what I wanted.””
I stayed silent.
She continued.
“She was confident. Loved. Everyone trusted her.””
“And you?””
Vanessa smiled bitterly.
“I was always second.””
A strange calm filled her.
“Even when we were children.””
I frowned.
“We?””
She looked at me.
“You never wondered why Claire and I became friends?””
I felt cold.
“What are you saying?””
Vanessa walked toward the desk.
She picked up a photograph.
A photograph of Claire and Vanessa.
Younger.
Teenagers.
I had never seen it before.
“We grew up together.””
My chest tightened.
“You told me you met her at work.””
“I lied.””
She placed the photo down.
“Claire knew me before you ever did.””
“Why?””
“Because she was the only person who knew the real me.””
The room felt darker.
“She knew about Eric.””
I froze.
Vanessa smiled.
“So you found out.””
“Yes.””
“Did they tell you what happened?””
“Your husband disappeared.””
Her expression didn’t change.
“He abandoned me.””
“Is that what you tell everyone?””
“It’s the truth.””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“Because Claire knew.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
“What did she tell you?””
I didn’t answer.
That was my mistake.
Her eyes narrowed.
“She left you something.””
I stayed silent.
Vanessa laughed softly.
“You have no idea how much she hated secrets.””
My heart pounded.
“She wasn’t the one keeping them.””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Are you sure?””
The question bothered me.
Because I remembered something.
The videos.
The missing pieces.
The damaged files.
Someone had edited the truth.
Someone had chosen what I saw.
“Where is Emma?””
Vanessa looked toward the door.
“She’s with someone.””
My blood ran cold.
“Who?””
She smiled.
“You’ll find out.””
I moved toward her.
“You’re coming with me.””
She didn’t fight.
That scared me more.
“You still don’t understand, Daniel.””
“Understand what?””
“That Claire wasn’t trying to save you from me.””
I stopped.
“She was trying to save you from the truth.””
My phone buzzed.
A message.
From Michael.
*Daniel, don’t trust Vanessa. She’s not alone.*
I looked up.
Vanessa saw my expression.
“Your brother?””
I froze.
“How do you know?””
She smiled.
“Because Michael has always been terrible at choosing sides.””
My phone buzzed again.
This time, a video.
I opened it.
The footage showed the abandoned house.
Outside.
From another camera.
Michael was walking toward the building.
But he wasn’t alone.
A man followed behind him.
A man I had never seen before.
Vanessa watched my face.
“You recognize him?””
“No.””
She smiled.
“You should.””
The video zoomed in.
The man’s face became clearer.
And my blood turned cold.
Because I had seen him before.
Not in my life.
In Claire’s files.
In the old photographs.
The missing husband.
Eric Dalton.
Alive.
My phone slipped slightly in my hand.
“That’s impossible.””
Vanessa’s expression was unreadable.
“Is it?””
I looked at her.
“Eric is alive?””
She walked toward the window.
“He never disappeared.””
My heart pounded.
“Then where has he been?””
Vanessa looked back at me.
“Watching.””
The word echoed.
Watching.
The cameras.
The messages.
The secrets.
Eric.
Vanessa.
Someone else.
A terrible thought entered my mind.
“Claire found out.””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
“She found out Eric was alive.””
Still nothing.
“And that’s why she died.””
Her silence was enough.
I felt sick.
“You killed her.””
Vanessa looked hurt.
Not angry.
Hurt.
“You still don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
She stared at me.
“Claire wasn’t killed because she discovered Eric.””
A pause.
“She was killed because she discovered who brought him back.””
My breathing stopped.
“What?””
The door behind me opened.
I turned.
A man stood there.
Older.
Tired.
But alive.
Eric Dalton.
Vanessa’s first husband.
He looked at me.
And then he said the one thing I never expected to hear.
“Daniel…”
His voice shook.
“I’m sorry.””
I couldn’t move.
“Sorry for what?””
Eric looked down.
“For Claire.””
The room went silent.
Then he said:
“Because I was there the night she died.””
I stared at him.
“Why?””
Eric looked at Vanessa.
Then back at me.
“Because Claire wasn’t Vanessa’s enemy.””
May you like
A pause.
“She was mine.””
