Chapter 7: The Voice Behind The Camera

For several seconds after the video ended, nobody moved.

The screen went black.

But Vanessa’s voice remained in my head.

*Once Claire is gone, Daniel will finally be ours.*

Ours.

Not mine.

Not hers.

Ours.

That one word changed everything.

I looked at Michael.

He looked back at me with a face full of regret.

Not shock.

Not confusion.

Regret.

“You knew,” I whispered.

Michael opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

That hurt more than any lie.

Because a stranger keeping a secret was one thing.

My own brother doing it was something else.

“Daniel,” he finally said.

I stepped away.

“No.””

“Please.””

“No, Michael.””

My voice shook.

“I buried my wife.””

The words came out faster.

“I stood in front of everyone and told them she was gone. I held Emma while she cried for her mother. I watched Vanessa comfort me.””

I pointed at the phone.

“And all this time, you knew something happened.””

Michael looked down.

“I didn’t know everything.””

“Enough.””

He flinched.

“Enough to tell me.””

The silence between us was unbearable.

Finally, Olivia spoke.

“Daniel, Michael did try to help Claire.””

I turned toward her.

“Don’t defend him.””

“I’m not.””

“Then tell me why he stayed quiet.””

Michael closed his eyes.

“Because Claire asked me to.””

I laughed once.

A bitter, empty sound.

“Of course she did.””

I looked around the room.

Everyone had an excuse.

Everyone had a reason.

Everyone had chosen what I was allowed to know.

Michael reached into his jacket.

I immediately stepped back.

“What are you doing?””

He slowly pulled out a small envelope.

“Claire gave me this.””

My heart stopped.

Another letter.

Another secret.

“When?””

“The night she died.””

I stared at him.

“Then why didn’t you give it to me?””

His face tightened.

“Because I never got the chance.””

“What does that mean?””

Michael looked toward the window.

“Because when I went back to your house the next morning, Vanessa was already there.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“She was acting like she was grieving. Like everyone else.””

“Everyone thought she was.””

Michael nodded.

“That was the problem.””

He placed the envelope on the table.

“She was too prepared.””

I looked at the envelope.

“Open it.””

Michael hesitated.

“It was meant for you.””

“Then why are you still holding it?””

He looked away.

Because he knew.

He had no answer.

I grabbed it.

Inside was another note.

Claire’s handwriting.

But this time, the words were shorter.

*Daniel,*

*If you are reading this, then something happened that I feared.*

*Please don’t hate Michael. He tried to help me.*

I looked at my brother.

My anger didn’t disappear.

But it shifted.

*The person Vanessa is working with is someone who has access to our home. Someone who knows Daniel’s habits. Someone who can make people believe anything.*

My hands tightened around the paper.

*I found proof, but I need more time.*

*If I don’t get that time, remember this: Emma was never the reason I was afraid. Emma was the reason I stayed.*

I swallowed hard.

Claire.

Even in her final moments, she was thinking about our daughter.

The next line was underlined.

*Do not let Vanessa convince you that she loves Emma.*

My breathing stopped.

Because that sentence was exactly what I had believed.

I had spent months telling myself Vanessa loved my daughter.

I had ignored every sign because I wanted it to be true.

The final words were:

*The truth is hidden where Emma feels safest.*

I looked at Michael.

“Her room.””

He nodded.

“I think so.””

I stood immediately.

“We’re going back.””

Olivia grabbed my arm.

“Daniel, wait.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“You need to understand something.””

“What now?””

Her expression was serious.

“Vanessa knows we’re looking.””

I froze.

“How?””

Michael looked toward the window.

“Because she wanted us to.””

I frowned.

“What?””

He sighed.

“Daniel, think about it.””

I hated that he was making sense.

“The cameras.””

I looked at him.

“She left evidence.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Michael’s face was grim.

“Because she wanted you to find it.””

My stomach turned.

“Why would she do that?””

“Because Vanessa doesn’t just want control.””

“What does she want?””

Michael looked at me.

“She wants you to choose her.””

The words sounded insane.

But then I remembered.

Every time Emma cried, Vanessa was there.

Every time Claire was mentioned, Vanessa looked hurt.

Every time I pulled away, Vanessa became more desperate.

It wasn’t love.

It was possession.

We drove back to my house together.

For the first time in eighteen months, I looked at my home differently.

Not as a place filled with memories.

As a place full of secrets.

The police had already removed the obvious cameras.

But Claire knew something.

Something hidden.

Something only Emma knew.

I went straight upstairs.

Emma’s room looked exactly the same.

The stuffed animals.

The pink blankets.

The glowing stars.

I stood in the doorway.

“She said this was where Emma felt safest.””

Michael walked behind me.

“Look.””

He pointed toward the bookshelf.

The same bookshelf Emma had pointed at the night everything changed.

I moved closer.

I searched every shelf.

Nothing.

The toys.

Nothing.

The books.

Nothing.

Then I noticed something.

One book was upside down.

A children’s story Claire used to read to Emma every night.

I pulled it out.

The pages were hollowed.

Inside was a small memory card.

Nobody spoke.

I held it carefully.

“What is this?””

Michael looked stunned.

“Claire hid it.””

Olivia stepped closer.

“Play it.””

I found an old laptop.

My hands shook as I inserted the card.

A video file appeared.

No title.

Just a date.

The day before Claire died.

I pressed play.

The screen showed Claire sitting in Emma’s room.

She looked exhausted.

But determined.

“Daniel,” she said.

My heart broke hearing her voice.

“If you’re watching this, I’m sorry.””

I covered my mouth.

She looked directly into the camera.

“I didn’t know who to trust anymore.””

The video shook slightly.

Claire continued.

“Vanessa knows I found out about her.””

A pause.

“She knows I found out about the money.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“What money?””

Claire looked down.

“I found payments.””

The video continued.

“Someone has been sending Vanessa money for months.””

My heart pounded.

“Someone?””

Claire nodded.

“Someone close to us.””

Then she said something that made Michael step backward.

“Someone in Daniel’s family.””

The room went silent.

Michael looked at me.

“No.””

Claire continued.

“I don’t know if they’re working together or if one of them is using the other.””

She reached toward the camera.

“I need you to listen carefully, Daniel.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Don’t trust anyone who tells you they were protecting you.””

The video froze.

Then resumed.

Claire’s voice became quieter.

“There is one person Vanessa is afraid of.””

I leaned closer.

“Who?””

Claire looked toward the bedroom door.

Like she was afraid someone might hear.

Then she whispered:

“Her real husband.””

My blood ran cold.

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

Because Vanessa had told me she had never been married before.

She told me she had no serious relationships.

She told me she had spent years alone.

A lie.

Another lie.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone looked at me.

I answered.

“Hello?””

For several seconds, there was only breathing.

Then a man spoke.

A voice I had never heard before.

“Daniel Mercer?””

“Yes.””

“You found Claire’s videos.””

My grip tightened.

“Who are you?””

The man laughed softly.

“That’s the wrong question.””

My heart started pounding.

“What do you want?””

A pause.

Then:

“I want you to know the woman you married was never Vanessa’s first victim.””

I looked at the others.

Michael’s face had gone pale.

Olivia whispered:

“Daniel…”

The voice continued.

“Ask Vanessa what happened to her first husband.””

The call ended.

I stood there frozen.

Because for the first time, I realized something terrifying.

May you like

Claire wasn’t the beginning of Vanessa’s secret.

She was just the person who discovered it.
