Chapter 5: The Person I Never Suspected

I didn’t sleep that night.

Not because I was afraid.

Because I was trying to remember.

Every conversation.

Every face.

Every person who had walked into my home after Claire died.

The photograph sat on the kitchen table.

I had stared at it for hours.

Claire standing outside our house.

Vanessa beside her.

And the person next to Vanessa.

My brother.

Michael.

My own brother.

The man who had hugged me at Claire’s funeral.

The man who had carried Emma when she was too tired to walk.

The man who told me, “You’re not alone, Daniel.””

Those words felt different now.

Like they belonged to someone else.

At six in the morning, Emma found me sitting at the table.

“Daddy?””

I quickly turned the photograph face down.

“Hey, sweetheart.””

She climbed onto the chair beside me.

“You didn’t sleep.””

I smiled weakly.

“Neither did you?””

She shook her head.

“I had a bad dream.””

I reached over and brushed her hair back.

“What happened?””

She looked toward the hallway.

“Vanessa was in it.””

My chest tightened.

“What did she do?””

Emma squeezed Bunny.

“She was looking for something.””

“What?””

She frowned, trying to remember.

“Something Mommy hid.””

The words stayed with me.

Something Mommy hid.

“Emma, did Mommy ever hide things from you?””

She nodded.

“Sometimes.””

“Like what?””

“Little things.””

“Why?””

She shrugged.

“She said grown-up things were dangerous.””

I looked at my daughter.

Four years old.

And somehow she had known more about the danger around her than I did.

After breakfast, I dropped Emma off with my sister, Rachel.

I didn’t tell her everything.

Not yet.

I couldn’t.

Because saying it out loud would make it real.

My brother might have been involved.

My brother.

The person who shared my childhood.

The person who stood beside me when our father died.

The person who told me Claire’s death wasn’t my fault.

I drove to the abandoned coffee shop twenty minutes early.

I parked across the street and watched.

The place had been closed for years.

The windows were dusty.

The sign was faded.

A perfect place for someone who didn’t want to be seen.

At exactly 2:00 p.m., someone walked through the door.

A woman.

I recognized her immediately.

Dr. Olivia Reed.

Claire’s doctor.

I stepped inside.

She was sitting in the corner with two cups of coffee.

When she saw me, her expression changed.

Not surprise.

Guilt.

“Daniel.””

I sat across from her.

“You knew.””

She looked down.

“I knew something was wrong.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because Claire asked me not to.””

I laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because I didn’t know what else to do.

“Everyone knew something.””

“Daniel—”

“Claire knew. You knew. Maybe Michael knew. Maybe Vanessa knew.””

I leaned forward.

“And I was the only idiot who didn’t.””

Olivia looked away.

“You weren’t an idiot.””

“Then what was I?””

She didn’t answer.

Because there was no answer that would make me feel better.

I pushed the photograph toward her.

“Explain this.””

Her face went pale.

“Where did you get that?””

“Someone sent it to me.””

“Who?””

“That’s not important.””

“It is.””

Her hands tightened around her coffee cup.

“Daniel, you need to understand something.””

“Then explain.””

She looked around the empty café.

“Claire was afraid.””

“Of Vanessa?””

Olivia didn’t answer immediately.

That was enough.

“Yes.””

I felt my jaw tighten.

“Why?””

“Because Claire believed Vanessa was trying to take control of her life.””

“What does that mean?””

Olivia sighed.

“Vanessa became obsessed with your family.””

I stared at her.

“She was Claire’s friend.””

“I know.””

“She helped us after Claire died.””

“I know.””

“She became my wife.””

Olivia’s expression softened.

“And that is why Claire was terrified.””

I leaned back.

“Tell me everything.””

She was quiet for a long time.

Then she began.

“After Emma was born, Vanessa started spending more time with Claire. At first, Claire thought she was being supportive. But then things changed.””

“How?””

“She started copying Claire.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“The way she dressed. The things she bought. The way she talked about you.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“She wanted my life?””

Olivia nodded.

“Claire didn’t know what to do. She didn’t want to accuse someone without proof.””

I looked at the table.

“So she installed cameras.””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t she show me?””

Olivia’s eyes lowered.

“Because she found something before she could.””

“What?””

She reached into her bag.

My heart started pounding.

She placed a small envelope on the table.

“I was supposed to give you this if anything happened.””

My hands froze.

“Why do you have it?””

“Claire gave it to me.””

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a letter.

Another one.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

*Daniel,*

*If Olivia gives you this, then I was right to be afraid.*

My throat tightened.

*I need you to know that I never wanted to hurt you. I never wanted you to doubt people you loved. But Vanessa is not who she says she is.*

I kept reading.

*She doesn’t want to be part of our family. She wants to replace it.*

My breathing slowed.

*She talks about Emma like she is an obstacle. She talks about you like you are something she deserves.*

The next sentence made my hands shake.

*But Vanessa isn’t the only person I’m worried about.*

I looked up.

Olivia was watching me.

I continued.

*Someone is helping her. Someone close to us. Someone who knows our routines.*

My eyes moved faster.

*Daniel, if you find this, do not trust anyone who says they were trying to protect you.*

I stopped.

Because that sentence sounded familiar.

Someone who tried to save Claire.

The anonymous message.

I read the final lines.

*The truth about my death is hidden where Emma feels safest.*

I looked up.

Emma.

Her bedroom.

The stars.

The bookshelf.

The places Claire had touched.

“Where did you find this?”” I asked Olivia.

“She gave it to me two days before she died.””

“Two days?””

“Yes.””

“Why wait until now?””

Olivia’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because I was scared.””

“Of what?””

She looked at the photograph.

“Of being right.””

A noise came from outside.

A car door closing.

Olivia immediately looked toward the window.

Her face changed.

“Daniel.””

“What?””

“You shouldn’t have come here.””

I turned.

A black SUV was parked outside.

The engine was still running.

Someone was sitting inside.

Watching us.

Olivia stood quickly.

“We need to leave.””

“Who is it?””

She grabbed my arm.

“Daniel, listen to me.””

Her voice dropped.

“That person in the photo…”

I looked back at her.

“Yes?””

She swallowed.

“The person standing beside Vanessa wasn’t Michael.””

I froze.

“What?””

She shook her head.

“I know who it was.””

The door of the SUV opened.

Someone stepped out.

Olivia whispered:

“That’s the person who killed Claire.””

The figure walked toward the coffee shop.

Closer.

Closer.

Then my phone buzzed.

A new message.

I looked down.

Unknown number.

May you like

Only one sentence.

*Ask Olivia what she did the night Claire died.*
